I walked around the lake with some friends. It was nice. We saw some animals and fish swimming in the lake!

I grew up in the Columbia and Ellicott City areas. I have been to many parks around both areas. Although, I have to say, I am not in love with any of them, I particular feel that Lake Elkhorn is the least interesting of them all. It's an OK place to take your children if you happen to be close by, but there are certainly better places out there. My children had a very difficult time riding their bikes on the path because it was SOOO hilly and bumpy. The playground was a little bit gross (it felt really sticky, and they had one of those gross sand boxes). Also, the area is just a tiny bit sketchy, and so are SOME of the people. The man-made water fall thing looks mediocre and the entire path is not particularly scenic.... it all looks forcefully placed there.... it does not look natural at all! Overall, it is NOT a BAD place; it is simply a boring place.

My daughter lives in one of the townhouses. I can be found on the Lake at least twice daily when I visit, which is often. Very pleasant walk. Lots of shade.

Two choices for parking: off Broken Land Pkway or off Cradlerock Way. Lovely in any season. Watch for the birds, turtles, snakes in water.

Lake Elkhorn provides a balance of convenience and the ability to get away. The main Lake loop is 1.9 miles (and very well marked with blue signs and arrows). It is surrounded by residential housing (primarily row/town houses, but a few apartments as well); additional trails branch off the main loop and enable you to get away from the residential areas to connect with the Patuxent Branch Trail. This adds quite a few additional miles of paved trails to your adventure. On any given day, you can do a single 1.9 mile loop, or an out-and-back to Savage Mill for a total of over 10 miles.
The lake loop is well used by people who are fishing, running, and walking,...ages range from the elderly to mid-aged to adolescent. There is a great deal of ethnic diversity, which helps make the lake loop more welcoming. I have never felt threatened on the lake loop trai during the day, although after sunset there is no lighting, so it gets very dark.

Free parking areas (albeit a bit limited/small) enable you to start a walk or run at the lake.

Because of the constant overflights by BWI Airport thanks to the Federal Aviation Administration and Governor Hogan, who allowed BWI expansion, the skies over what was once a quiet and relaxing lake are now loud. Constant toxic jet noise and toxic pollution, dropped on people, including children and babies at higher risk of asthma, with children facing learning difficulties (all verified in the medical research literature), have ruined this lake. A minute to approach, a minute to fade, then the next one and the next one...on and on and on. And Columbia Association, so ever eager to make residents follow every silly rule does NOTHING. Shameful. This toxic noise has been shown to increase physical, psychological and financial harm to human beings. Our lake is gone.

It is remarkable how much green space there is in Columbia. This is one of the nicer spots I have found during my visits.

When I lived in Columbia for 7 years I ran here almost every day. Now when I make trips into Columbia for work or for pleasure I make sure to plan a few laps around the lake.

Its almost a 2 mile trail that has recently been re-paved and expanded. Great place to take the family for a walk and play on the playground.

Also great fishing at Lake Elkhorn. You can take a boat out there (no engine) and get to better spots to fish. I have caught all kinds of fish out there.

Pleasant walk, saw squirrels, turtles, geese & goslings, nice gentle stroll in the sun.
Friendly people, places to stop sit & chill, & plenty of parking.

Its a beautiful almost 2 miles stretch lake surrounded by tall beautiful trees and flowers. There is a children activity place. You can plan your next party here when weather is nice. Its great for fishing and bird watching. There is a McDonald and a gas station across the street for a quick meal or snack. Its absolutely beautiful in fall.
