    Love Long Sands!!
I’ve been visiting with friends every summer for over 15 years, staying at a house right on Long Sands. It’s a great location and the beach is never really crowded. It’s a very walkable area and people are really friendly—we love sitting on the porch as people go by, people and dogs that we see year after year. Convenient to restaurants and grocery and pharmacy aren’t far. Only problem we have with the beach is that it’s often covered with piles of seaweed. The town rakes the beach, but lots of days we can’t swim because the water is so thick with seaweed it’s horrible. On no seaweed days it’s perfect. We’re at the north end where there are no lifeguards or bathrooms, so it’s less crowded than the other end near the public building. Very convenient since we can just go home for “services.” Not a fancy resorty type place, but perfect for chilling with friends for a few weeks.

    No crowds at all!
Yesterday was such a perfect day to walk on the Long Sands Beach. It was windy and a bit cold, but the sun was shining, the waves were crashing and the seagulls were happy to see us after a winter break. We enjoyed our two miles walk so much - so perfect without crowds. We are coming back very soon.

It is a beautiful beach with a lot of recent improvements. Beach attraction always make a great vacation destination. However, summer is probably the worst time to go since it gets really crowded. Summer time crowds are not the most pleasant group to be around when parking is a hassle and lines are long. York used to be a hidden gem but it no longer is so its appeal no longer fits my needs. You may get that nice secluded feeling during off time where nature seems to melt into your overall experience.

During my vacation July 4th week, I spent several days in York.

On an outing to Long Sands Beach, I arrived soon after noon and found several empty parking spaces as well as high tide. The ocean was almost up to the seawall on the Long Sands Road end of the beach and not very far from the seawall at the Nubble Road end of the beach. A lot of people were sitting on the seawall. Very few people had space down on what little sand was still exposed. I didn’t remember the tide coming in that high before several years earlier. It left me wondering if it was a flood tide or this rising sea levels that scientists talk about.

So, with no room on the beach, I sat on the seawall near Nubble Road for awhile. I noticed a lot of rocks on the beach this year.

I didn’t enjoy this experience at Long Sands Beach much.

I soon headed a short distance away to the Long Sands General Store for lunch.

Something’s changed at Long Sands Beach. It isn’t as nice as it used to be.

I rate Long Sands Beach at only 3.25. I recommend avoiding a visit in the hours approaching and after high tide.

This one-mile (1.6 km) beach was overwhelmed with visitors from far-flung places on a late-summer weekend afternoon. Even though high season had ended, the narrow strand was absolutely jammed with bodies of all types seeking salty surf and the last of the summer sun. The beach appeared mostly clean and free of flotsam. It offered great views of Nubble Lighthouse on distant Cape Neddick. Metered parking was curbside. Open parking spots were few and very far between. We loved the views, but we abhorred the parking hassle and the lack of sand surface at approaching high tide. If we come again, it will be much earlier in the day and on a weekday.

Why an amazing spot on the southern coast of Maine. Just 4.5 hours from New York it was beautiful and serene. From early morning walks on the beach to boost boarding all day with the kids. The beach was clean and the water was crystal clear.
We had such an amazing time spent on the beach we can’t wait to go back next year.
Just watch the tides... If you catch the high tide the entire beach is underwater. You need to catch it on the outgoing tide and you have hours of great beach time.

A great beach- clean, great waves. Other beach goers very considerate with spacing between groups. We walked the beach every morning of our stay and then spent a good part of the afternoon riding the waves.

I have been going to York Beach all my life. Family used to own a home there but sold it back in the 70's. We now rent a home on the Nubble that is beautiful and walking distance to Long Sands. The only drawback is at high tide there is no beach to sit on except for a small area by the bath house. If you don't luck out with the tides, that is a good portion of the day without anywhere to sit. Beach is along a busy road and hard to see people walking in between the cars so dangerous for small children. Town area is quaint, very crowded in the summer, Goldenrod is a must visit!

It is one of our favorite walks in York, both on the long promenade and on the sand beach. We love it even in the winter! The seagulls are everywhere and are so much fun to watch. The ocean is usually very calm when we walk there and the ocean breeze is so refreshing... Lovely...

Paid parking is along the promenade. You can pay with your credit card at the machines. Do not pay cash because some of the machines are not working properly and there is no cash return during the pandemic.
