About Coast Encounters
People enjoy exploring the many tidal pools of Maine, but do you know about the amazing critters that actually live in between the tides? Coast Encounters will take you on a unique, hands-on excursion where you will roll up your sleeves, get your feet wet, and discover the vast array of marine life that lies just beneath your feet. Participants must be at least 7 years old and in good physical health to crawl over very slippery rocks and seaweed. Each excursion lasts about three hours and is scheduled around the low tide time for that day. Though based in Wells, excursions may be in Kennebunk or Ogunquit. If sitting on a boat for hours squinting to catch a glimpse of marine life doesn’t appeal to you, you’ve come to the right place. You’ll peek under rocks, identify over 30 intertidal plants and animals, and learn interesting facts about each one. Most importantly, you will learn how to explore life between the tides in a way that is safe and respectful of its inhabitants.

Carol was a very knowledgeable and a gracious guide. Her shoes are amazing, and the tour was worth every cent. Memories will last a lifetime! She has a way with kids that just brings out the confidence needed to explore and learn about slimy, salty, and sometimes sharp creatures that live in the tide pools, in an very safe way. We had a terrific time in August during our tour of middle beach in Kennebunk. Will absolutely return when our youngest is old enough to safely explore the “land between tides” with his older brother!

Thanks Lindsey. I’m glad I made you and your son feel safe during the adventure. Yes, things are slimy, salty, and sometimes sharp, but honestly that’s what adds to the memories of this unique experience. I hope we can do it again when your family visits Maine next time.

LITTORALLY my favorite part of our nine-day trip to Maine (get it?). My husband and I booked a private session with Carol and couldn’t have had more fun. Carol taught us about seaweeds, cockles, how to find crabs and lobsters, and so much more. Not overly academic, just fun. This was great as a young couple but would also be amazing with kids. Couldn’t recommend more highly!

Haha...I love your pun ! Yes we indeed explored the "littoral" zone (the land between the tides) and found plenty of native and non-native inhabitants. I'm glad you mentioned that it's fun for young couples too. Hope to see you back again soon!

We're a family whose travel itineraries often center around our kids love of marine life. We've been tidepooling all over - have visited almost every major aquarium in the country - and our experience with Coast Encounters and Coastal Carol was absolutely the highlight of our trip and ranks right up there at the top for any travel experience my kids have had. She perfectly balanced info for my seven year old who is a little more reserved - and my 11 year old who is very hands on and fearless. We had been independently going to the pools in the days leading up to our excursion with Carol, and had only found about 10% of the sea life she uncovered. We can't recommend this enough! Its very COVID safe -- super informative (we learned so much that we'll take with us on future marine adventures) - and really exciting for the kids. Its slippery terrain, but she makes everyone feel comfortable - and has you wear super grippy waterproof shoes.

My family enjoyed a Labor Day morning tour of tidal pools with Coastal Encounters. We are: husband and wife, almost 9 year old boy and almost 7 year old girl. We have travelled to Maine for summer vacations nearly every year for over a decade and this was the single most memorable experience we have had. Coincidentally, this experience should be comfortable for those who are highly cautious with respect to COVID protocols. I highly recommend this experience to anyone spending time nearby. The tour started when we met Carol at 7:30 am. We were on the beach shortly after. We chose to book semi-private and were fortunate to be the only family on the tour and had Carol's undivided attention. I recommend booking a private tour and we intend to do so next year when we come back. For 90 minutes Carol guided us through the crystal clear waters. While my daughter was a little tired by the end, all four of us could have kept going for a lot longer. Carol's enthusiasm and knowledge combined with the beauty and diversity of the environment had all of us excited, laughing and enjoying the experience so much that we didn't realize how much we all learned until the end. Our kids are curious, adventurous and love the outdoors and so are inclined to this sort of thing. I think any kid would love it. Carol was a natural at teaching the kids, keeping them engaged and directed and also providing the adults with a great experience at the same time. The little snack and badges for the kids at the end worked like magic for the little ones. So in sum: fun, beautiful, professional, educational, awesome. You'll be glad that you did it.

Thank you Jon for this glowing review! I'm always amazed at how a fun, hands-on, experiential adventure such as this, triggers the learning channels in the brain. As a result, you not only learn so much but you retain it for years to come. I hope to see you next year. You'll be amazed how much knowledge your kids will have remembered!

Thanks Katie. I’m glad I provided a unique experience for you and your family during your stay in Maine. To my knowledge, I’m the only one in the state that guides this kind of adventure. Thanks for being one of the lucky ones!
