Excellent, well kept history of the area

My grandfather lived and is buried on Vinalhaven. His sister, my great Aunt lived there. I visited here as a child and LOVED it. A "must see" for history keepers of the area.

A truly wonderful variety of exhibits chronicling the island's history from its earliest farmers and sea captains, through its heyday as a granite quarrying center, it's brief turn as a spa location where folks came to "take the waters," and it's more recent life as a summer home for artists and academics. Well run and a testimony to its curators,... More

The Vinalhaven Historical Society museum is a must see place to get to learn more about the history and charm of this marine/quarry town and the entire island. It is well worth the time to take a look at the interesting displays of early life on the island.

We made prior arrangements to visit off season and the volunteers could not have been more accommodating. The purpose of our visit was to see our grandfather's peanut roasting machine and it is prominently displayed. They also had a folder of historical data on grandfather which will be a big help in our family tree research. The museum is well... More

I'd go again as it is not possible to take it all in. Pictures, old kitchen tools, advertisements, and tidbits about how they use to live-its all there. Allow plenty of time.

Well preserved, meticulously maintained collection of Island history. I particularly enjoyed the photographic history of the Island from it 's granite quarrying days to present day. The civil war photos of Islanders who participated was haunting. There is certainly something for everyone housed within the old Vinalhaven Town Hall.

Every once in a while, we discover hidden treasures. The little museum done by the Historical Society is an amazing place. I have spent hours in it, looking at all the *stuff* and going through documents. It is intimate, fun and the staff are incredibly helpful

Rich, straightforward presentation of island history, including the granite industry, from which many important structures, including the Washington Monument, were built.
