Great place with warm water.

We walked here from town and sat with our feet in the water and spoke to a person from the area for 30-40 minutes and had a great time watching people jump off the walls. What a great spot to play and visit!

Beautiful!

It was a bit brisk when we visited so we didn't swim but it is a beautiful little quarry. A few locals were there.

So beautiful and interesting

If the weather is good, take a swim in one of Vinalhaven's quarries. The water is clear and surprisingly warm.

Loved our Visit
Sep 2017
People are friendly, and the island is adorable. The breakfast we had was great just wish I could remember the name. We came back the next day to buy lobster for our trip back home.

Beautiful Location and Refreshing Water
Jul 2017 • Family
It's about a mile and a half walk from the ferry with a couple of small hills. You can take a taxi for $5. The location has a parking on one side of the quarry and non on the other side. Railings have been installed to make the access down into the quarry easier and safer. I've never been to a quarry with railings before. The fresh water is cooling and refreshing. The one draw back is horse flies, better bring some bug spray to ward them off. It's definitely a nice place to stop for and hour or two and have a refreshing rest bit.

Cool and refreshing

The other day I went to Lawson's quarry. There were a bunch of teenagers cranking out some cannon balls off the cliff by the road. The flat rocks had people sunning themselves like seals on the rocks outside the harbor. Some dorky kid with a scuba mask was swimming around with his snorkel splashing the little kids. When he tried to swamp the three year old girl in her raft I knew I had to take action. I stuck my thumb over his breathing apparatus and he had to gasped and came up for air. The parents of the kid said to stop I said why don't you tell your kid to stop splashing then. They then said that they don't talk to locals and that their kid was perfect and that they were high class people and everyone else was nothing because they were from Massachusetts. Let's just say that I have the resources to make sure the rest of their trip wasn't so "high class". Thinking about putting in an indoor pool so I don't have to deal with these frigging people anymore.

Its about a mile from the landing dock from the ferry. It is wonderful.....steps leading down and about a 75 yard swim across. Water warm for those of us from the south.

Fresh water swimming!

Sometimes it's a bit chilly, but refreshing and always beautiful! If you have the nerve, jump off a little cliff to add some excitement to your swim. :-)

Nice place to swim
Jul 2016 • Family
This as a former granite quarry. It is very rocky, and there is not much of a defined space for your feet to touch the bottom as the bottom drops off randomly. We brought our three-year-old here to swim. She had a good time. I felt overly concerned for those jumping off cliffs as I has a co-worker who died doing just that at another well known spot back on the mainland due to a head injury. Overall, this is the better of the two quarries to swim at for small children. We went over to the far side as that was where it seemed more appropriate for families with small children. There's really nowhere else to swim on Vinalhaven.
