. Vinalhaven was my mother's birth place, and as a child, my parents would bring me to the Island for the summer. I spent all my childhood summers, from the age of 5 until 19, at Lawson's Quarry. One summer I arrived and couldn’t wait to get to the quarry. When my girl friend from Massachusetts and I got to the quarry we found a telephone pole had fallen into the quarry. This was my favorite year at the quarry. The whole summer was spent riding the log. We would get on the log one at time. As more people would get on the log, the log would start to spin. The trick was to stay on the log as long as you could as it spun. I don't think I've laughed that much since

Perfect for any age to swim. Everyone from the very young to the very old was there on the afternoon we went swimming. The ledges are great for jumping or just hanging out in the water. Sunning yourself up on the warm rocks is great.

there are 2 public swimming quarries on Vinalhaven: Lawson's and Booth's .
They are quite popular since the sea water is quite cold this far up in Maine.
Both are frequented by the locals and the summer visitors as safe, fun, freshwater swimming places. Kids especially love to swim, use floats, dive, chase fish....
The water is clear and cool and the flat smooth granite provides surrounding warm sunning surfaces.
we live on Vinalhaven June thru the end of December and always take guests for swimming to these quarries. my 2 grandchildren 10 an 12 absolutely loved them for hours.

The other day I went to Lawson's quarry. There were a bunch of teenagers cranking out some cannon balls off the cliff by the road. The flat rocks had people sunning themselves like seals on the rocks outside the harbor. Some dorky kid with a scuba mask was swimming around with his snorkel splashing the little kids. When he tried to swamp the three year old girl in her raft I knew I had to take action. I stuck my thumb over his breathing apparatus and he had to gasped and came up for air. The parents of the kid said to stop I said why don't you tell your kid to stop splashing then. They then said that they don't talk to locals and that their kid was perfect and that they were high class people and everyone else was nothing because they were from Massachusetts. Let's just say that I have the resources to make sure the rest of their trip wasn't so "high class". Thinking about putting in an indoor pool so I don't have to deal with these frigging people anymore.

What a treasure to find something like this where my children could swim freely in cool, clear, clean water! Some of our sweetest memories on the island were made here as my kids swam and dove. For tourists, its a unique experience and has an interesting history as well. Parking is limited and don't be afraid to ask the locals where you can safely dive or jump into the water. They are very friendly!

Great place to take a break form salt water swimming. Old quarry filled with fresh water. Pretty spot with ledges and steps. Has fish too. Ice skating in the winter. Very peaceful spot to have a picnic. A bit of a walk but easy bike ride. Better of the two swimming quarries. Warning: NO lifeguards and it has very deep water.

This as a former granite quarry. It is very rocky, and there is not much of a defined space for your feet to touch the bottom as the bottom drops off randomly. We brought our three-year-old here to swim. She had a good time. I felt overly concerned for those jumping off cliffs as I has a co-worker who died doing just that at another well known spot back on the mainland due to a head injury. Overall, this is the better of the two quarries to swim at for small children. We went over to the far side as that was where it seemed more appropriate for families with small children. There's really nowhere else to swim on Vinalhaven.

Cool crystal clear water. Wear swimming shoes, its slippery and hard to get into. Very easy destination to get to. People seem to be very conscientious about cleaning up after themselves. I don't think I would bring kids under 10. Seems to be a great pre-teen, teen swimming hole.

People are friendly, and the island is adorable. The breakfast we had was great just wish I could remember the name. We came back the next day to buy lobster for our trip back home.
