About
In the heart of Stonington harbor, Maine's most active lobstering port, fisheries come alive at our Discovery Wharf. We offer a get-your-hands-wet opportunity to engage and learn about local fisheries and the Gulf of Maine ecosystem. You can explore our touch tank with live creatures, our interactive touch wall, where you can navigate a map of Eastern Maine. Also, enjoy our virtual reality exhibit, where you can virtually step onto a working lobster boat, climb into a lobster trap, and much more. We are closed for the season and look forward to re-opening in May 2023.

What is billed as a science and education center proved that and much more as we were hosted by lobsterman Mr. Leroy Weed. He has been fishing for the last 70 years since he was just eight years old! He entertained and educated our family with lessons from his many years on the sea - about living, love, family and community.
As I think back over our week in Maine, our visit to Discovery Wharf sharing time together with Leroy was a highlight,

Stopped by here and enjoyed it very much. Mr. Weed was so welcoming and very knowledgeable. He was able to teach us about lobsters even though we are all native Mainers! The virtual reality experience was great. So glad we stopped in.

Seeing a blue lobster and one that is half red and half natural color was a sight never seen before. The virtual glasses to see a lobster man hauling lobsteers, kayaking and other sites on the island was a unique experience but cool.

Such a neat little spot. I love scallops and never knew where they came from or looked like in the ocean. I do now !

Great time learning about some of the lobster/fish/clams caught in the community. First time ever seeing a blue lobster.

The staff was so ready to help kids explore the touch tank and try out the VR. We are so thankful for this addition to the Stonington community.

Stopped by with few expectations...on that day, they had three rare lobsters in the tank. One was blue (1 in 2 million), a calico (1 in 30 mil), and a two-tone (red on one side, black on the other: 1 in 50 mil). The chance of all three being in the same place was one in 90 quadrillion! Sweet! The lobsterman who showed them to us had been at sea for 65 years and had never seen a two-tone.

This is a wonderful little stop. Not a big museum, but a very doable exhibit that is entertaining and very enjoyable.
