Challenging hike, but worth it.

This is not an easy hike -- lots of stairs and true to it's name, practically straight up. But the view is nice and it's a great workout. Long Pond, where you get on the trail... read more

If you are into a strenuous workout, this is for you. My 38 year old daughter asked me why we'd never taken this trail because we'd done everything else on MDI. I said I'd show her why. Well she never wants to do it again. There are no views from the top or anywhere else unless you bushwhack. If you... More

This is not an easy hike -- lots of stairs and true to it's name, practically straight up. But the view is nice and it's a great workout. Long Pond, where you get on the trail, is quite nice and you can swim, kayak, or canoe in the pond. Make a day of it -- hike the trail then cool... More

This is not an easy trail but it is a historic trail built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. There are beautiful views of Long Pond and the wooded portion of the hike is also lovely.

This trail was the end loop of a longer hike. It was definitely a challenge and well worth the time it took us to hike.

Hiked the Perpendicular trail up Mansell Mt. Trails starts from the Pumping Station at Long Pond, a little bit around the edge of the water. Switch-backed very steep granite stairs straight up the mountain, with one section of ladder/rungs. Very exhausting, but it's a beautifully designed and engineered trail. Be sure to stop and snap pictures at the overlook in... More

This is a wonderful hike, so don't be intimidated by the "Difficult" rating. After all, it is a solid granite stairway to the top of the approx. 1000 ft Mansell Mtn.. We took our two grandchildren (12 and 8) up with us and they handled it fine. The eight year old needed a few rest stops, but otherwise did great.... More

Tough hike up Mansell Mountain up over 300 cut granite steps, a few iron rungs and a small ladder. Incredible views of overlook of Beech Mountain, Long Pond and the outlying islands just before the summit. The return trail down the backside of mountain is a bit tough as there are no steps & just some steep rock slopes. Nothing... More

Some say this trail is not strenuous - perhaps not for avid hikers and runners - but for me, a moderately fit 59 year old, it was as strenuous going up as going down. If you think you can manage it, do it! It's well worth the effort of going up for the gorgeous views (even on an overcast day)... More

The Perpendicular Trail itself is moderately strenuous because it is uphill on granite steps. But it is not technically challenging - it is steps and 1 very small ladder. If you are scared of heights ( as I am) you will not find this problematic. There are no narrow ledges or ladders going up rock faces. The views are lovely,... More
