My mom and I took a 4 day watercolor class with the talented, encouraging and patient Carol Douglas on the American Eagle the 3rd week in September. Even with challenging weather, the cruise was fantastic! Captain Tyler, First Mate Asher and crew Kevin, Fiona were cheerful and informative. Their hospitality was top notch and we were made to feel like honored guests and part of the crew as we helped with various tasks, well suited to our novice sailing abilities. The food was expertly prepared by the chef Pinky, her husband Glen and galley assistant Mary. All cooking and water heating was done by wood stove, which is a historic epicurean marvel. The shoulder seasons (Spring and Fall) have just enough cool weather to make the galley a welcoming place to warm up. The days were warm and cool nights made sleeping very comfortable. I feel very fortunate to have experienced the variety of sailing winds from fast winds that had us flying thought the waves, as well as calm lazy wind with bright sun. We painted the views of spruce covered rocky islands, distant Camden Hills and sparkling seas from the deck and caught glimpses of porpoises and a FIN WHALE, along with many seals and bald eagles. In addition to the natural wonders, there were lobster boats, sailboats, other schooners, light houses and buoys. I brought my fishing pole and caught 4 mackerel when we were anchored in various harbors. Penobscot Bay is known for having some of the best sailing in the world with gorgeous islands and fishing villages. This was my 2nd schooner cruise and I can't recommend the American Eagle enough!

(the only option for "who was with me" for family, was young kids or teens. My mom is a senior and I'm in my late 40s)

I was fortunate to sail on the American Eagle recently from August 1to August 6, 2022 on the Swan’s Island Music Festival Excurion and I rate it Excellent. I am still glowing from the excellent food, comfortable and exciting sailing, and the great comaraderie of new friends from the trip. This was my 5th trip on the American Eagle and she never disappoints me. This year we had a new captain and without reservation, I salute Captain Tyler King as a top notch skipper and a capable and wonderful guide to the joys of coastal sailing. The Crew was excellent also, and I look forward to scheduling another wonderful cruise on this special boat next year. Go for it!You will be in good hands and won’t be sorry!

My favorite part of the trip was the peace and serenity of the sailboat traveling through the exquisite beauty of Penobscot Bay. I was there with my daughter to take a class with Carol Douglas on watercolor painting. The class was great and I learned new things about painting. Carol was very encouraging and so were the others in the class. The beauty of taking a class on a schooner is that you get to paint uninterrupted by having to make meals. Delicious meals appeared at regular intervals. We had the opportunity to go ashore in Bucks Harbor and see that unspoiled coastal town. And we had a great lobster feast on Burnt Island off of North Haven. There was meat for those who don't adore lobster. Our fellow passengers were lovely which made for great conversations when we took breaks in the cozy galley! My daughter can't eat gluten and the cook Pinky always had a GF version of dinner for her. We had a little rain for a few days but somehow it didn't dampen my spirits! One night captain Tyler King sang some lovely songs and read some humorous stories of life on the Maine coast. I was a happy camper on the American Eagle.

We signed up for a 3-night Perseid Meteor Shower trip. Of course it rained and the night skies were obscured by thick cloud cover. It didn't matter!

The crew and fellow passengers were friendly, generous of spirit, good humored, supportive and open-hearted. There were sights and adventures galore ... and the food was excellent!

My wife and I were enriched by the trip and look forward to another soon!

Do not hesitate to book a trip - you won't be disappointed!

The American Eagle is the perfect get away for feeling like you actually got away! Captain Tyler is a marvelous host who runs a beautiful, welcoming ship with accommodating, kind and joyful crew. Chef Marty's creations are out of this world - lobster bisque, baked salmon with local green beans in soy/ginger sauce, cauliflower curry chick peas soup, just to name a few, and mess mate Nate created scones, danish, blueberry pie and carrot cake - I could go on! All the guests (I brought my young adult sons) were relaxed and enjoyable to talk to as we watched the Maine coast go by. We had more clouds than sun but it truly didn't matter. We were cozy under the awning and enjoyed an amazing, exhilarating day of sailing on our last day. Lively discussions on books, movies, music sailing and tech followed by Tyler's guitar and story night were delightful. I cant wait to go back next year!

Sailing on the American Eagle allows you to leave the world behind, as you and your fellow sailors are guided by the wind and weather on this historic, charming wooden sailing schooner. The moment you feel the wind fill the sails, your cares will fall away.

Your day starts with good strong coffee and a fresh-baked breakfast appetizer like scones or biscuits. A delicious hearty breakfast follows, and before you know it, lunch is coming up from the galley. No afternoon is complete without another snack, and of course, appetizers precede the delicious dinner. You won’t believe that all of this fresh food is cooked in a tiny galley on a wood-fired stove. And of course, no Maine schooner trip is complete without a lobster bake. This one features steak, chicken and burgers, if lobster isn’t your thing.

During the day, you can share the company of your fellow travelers (or not, as the mood strikes you). The constantly changing scenery will captivate you. And you’ll have the chance stop at several of the many islands that dot the bay, with the chance to hike on trails or see picturesque Maine towns.

If the weather turns damp, you can stay on the deck beneath an awning or retire to the cozy wooden galley while you chat with the cook and mess mate. The rest of the crew are terrific too, ready to explain the workings of this historic vessel. Captain Tyler inspires confidence, with his calm demeanor, good sense of humor and obvious knowledge of, and love for, the American Eagle.

Quarters are tight, but cozy and comfortable. There’s no need to pack too much!

Terrific sailing, amongst the best of my 70 plus years sailing in many locales in the world. Well kept ship, great food, and the awesome scenery of Penobscot Bay and beyond. Knowledgeable Skipper/Owner; in fact raised in the saltiest of all ports Gloucester MASS, he has assembled great crew from Its Mate to Cook ( well really CHEF). Greatly enjoyed our active participation raising sails, and the opportunity to row the "gig" to various ports and beaches, plus sail and row the beautiful Whitehall. An all around perfect experience.

This was our 2nd trip on the American Eagle and we enjoyed every minute. The accommodations is what you would expect on a wooden schooner, close quarters. But that doesn’t take away from the experience on deck and the sights to be seen. It’s the only way to see and experience the sea coast of Maine. The entire crew of the American Eagle are true professionals and go out of their way to ensure a great trip. And the food is the best. Really spoils you, first class. After being home from our trip a week now I miss the experience already

What was amazing? The WHOLE experience. We took the 4 day 3 night trip at the end of September, fall colours were incredible, weather was fabulous, food was beyond great and Captain King and crew were THE best.
Activities were a lot of fun an time flew by.
So much so my wife was already talking of next year before we disembarked!!!
Great job all of you! To top it up, I had the opportunity to have a good talk with Captain John Foss, the ex-owner!
We WILL be back.
