An interesting walk out to the lighthouse on huge granite blocks. You have to watch your footing because there are gaps from 1 inch to 6-8 inches. The marines laid all the blocks in the breakwater over a period of 6 years. Walking out you can view the harbor and hundreds of lobster bouys.

The lighthouse itself is rather nondescript and unexciting compared to some others, but it is still a lighthouse worth checking off on one's lighthouse list. The walk out to the lighthouse is the real attraction here. The breakwater, built around 1890, is slightly less than one mile long, constructed of 750,000 tons of flat top granite rocks making it easy... More

I walked across the 7/8th mile distance over the uneven breakwater wall to see the lighthouse and keepers house. It was worth the trek, very interesting and definitely out in the middle of the bay! During visitors hours, all areas of the light house are open so definitely go during that time. Well worth it!

Everything everyone else said. Uneven walk. Be very careful. Once you get out there grab a seat and enjoy the view, the wind, the sun. Saw some seals in closer to the shore. Stopped walking to watch them a few times. Gorgeous boats on the water. If you time it right you should be able to watch them pull some... More

Rockland Breakwater Light is just beautiful. We travel Maine looking for lighthouses and checking them off our list. This was exceptional due to its location which is at the end of a mile long breakwater. Quite a walk and worth the effort for a great time!

Need some exercise? This is a fabulous walk along a long Breakwater leading to the Lighthouse. We have done it twice now. If we have time and are in Rockland; this is one of our favorite things to do. It pretty much puts you in the middle of the Harbor.

We walked on the breakwater out to the lighthouse. The surrounding views were amazing. It took us about 1 hour and 40 minutes but we stopped many times to take pictures and enjoy the views. Definitely something worth doing if in the Rockport area. Recommend bringing a jacket since it gets breezy as you walk out further.

Very nice walk on break wall. It was foggy the day we went and slick due to fog. We needed to pay close attention to the walk way as you could easily twist an ankle or worse. Wear stable shoes like athletic shoes and bring binoculars or your camera. Interesting birds and sea weed along the breakwater.

I would read the website about the lighthouse which will tell you that it is only open on special occasions and that there are no rest rooms available there. I do not know this and this influenced my cooments about this attraction. It is a 7/8 mile walk to the lighthouse on the uneven granite stones. There are multiple large... More

The breakwater is made of large pieces of granite placed there to make a breakwater. At the end is a lighthouse. The granite blocks are nice, but not a smooth surface, so be careful not to twist your ankle.
