The walk to the lighthouse is .9 miles on large flat top rocks. It is a real experience that should not be missed. It is not the easiest walk as you have to always watch each step but the view is outstanding!

Definitely need a sure foot for the long walk over massive granite boulders, but not hard to walk on. (almost a mile each way) It opens at 11, we went around 10:30 which was nice because it was empty. Nice to see the fishermen pulling in their lobster nets up close.

Was a nice little drive from our hotel room. 7/8 mile from the beginning to the light. Hugh rocks to walk on. Please don't walk if it has or had rained. Very slick and dangerous. But worth it.

Last sailed by this lighthouse a few days ago: bright sun, no clouds, no fog, and lots of wind. AND VERY HIGH TIDE. This translates into the breakwater being partially under water at high tide. When that happens, the adventurous might get stranded for an hour or two at the light, just about a foot above high water. Careful.

The rockland breakwater lighthouse was easy enough to find. Parking was easy as well, at the end of the street. The walk out would be difficult if you had small children or anyone who needs a walker. There are big gaps in the rock, I couldn't help but keep a lookout for fish or crab in them (but none were... More

Great hike pre-boat trip! Great view of Rockland and Harbor, easy walk to lighthouse and back. Beautiful views for picture taking. About 20 minutes each way.

The breakwater is nearly a mile long from shore, featuring the original keeper's house -- open only on weekends and holidays. One parks near the Samoset resort and enjoy a bracing, and challenging hopscotch walk over tons and tons of granite blocks place over an 18 year period and completed in 1900. Best day to visit? On the annual "Parade... More

The Rockland breakwater is just under a mile long and extends that far into the bay. The breakwater is make of large pieces of granite piled to protect Rockland harbors. There are gaps between the rocks so you should wear good hiking shoes and watch children closely. That given its an almost unique walk that ends at the lighthouse. If... More

Locals' favorite "hike" for the fresh salt air. Allow min. 90 minutes round-trip. Lighthouse is only open on rare occasions, so don't feel disappointed--the walk alone is worth reaching the end. Wave to the ferry and boats sailing by. Take your camera or fishing rod. Admire the view in any season. Avoid the edges especially when the surface is wet;... More
