This is a perfect hike if you're looking for a shorter moderate hike. It's about 2 hours round trip with some very steep parts. We hiked the day after a large rainstorm and it was incredibly muddy and slippery in many areas. Good sneakers/hiking shoes are a must!!! We saw a few people in flip flops and they were having a very hard time. There is a tower at the top of the mountain that provides stunning views of the surrounding lakes. Very highly recommended!!!

Enjoyed this hike a lot. Took a fairly long time. Generally smooth incline about halfway up then changes to really rocky terrain that is fairly steep, but the lookout from the top tower is excellent.

Great local hike to small mountain with lookout tower that sits between Rangeley Lake and Mooselookmeguntic Lake.
Great family activity even with smaller children.

This hike was not difficult for my wife and I, who have moderate experience with hiking. However, my niece was pretty out of breath halfway up the trail. The trail starts out slightly uphill but then changes to fairly steep inclines over rocks and tree roots. It's definitely fun to tackle a trail like this. At the top, there are stunning views of the surrounding area. My wife got some great pictures from the observation tower at the top. One nice benefit of this hike is the great smell of the pine trees at the top. This was a nice reminder of Christmas in August!

Came here during the Snowdeo for a bite to eat and to warm up. There must of been well over 200 people inside the alley and only about 20 bowling, We were surprised how quickly our food came out and the fact it was actually quite edible for the size of the crowed that was there. A bit pricey at $40 for two sandwiches and two appetizers, Bud Light $4.00 a bottle

We hiked up Bald Mountain for more views of the fall foliage taking the shorter 1.7 mile route from the Bald Mountain Road trailhead; the other trail starts at Carry Road and is 2.3 miles in length. The weather was more pleasant than that during our hike up Maiden’s Cliff in Camden, though the trail was still muddy in places and the rocky stretches still slippery from the recent rains. One hiking website had this rated at family-friendly but the rocky portions were challenging at points leading us to believe that Maine children must be made of stern stuff. It started out easy enough, through yellow-leaved sugar maples and birch. For whatever reason it seemed exposed tree roots were a greater problem likely to trip us up on this trail than had been the case at Maiden’s Cliff trail. As we headed higher and over the rocks the forest changed to pine trees, mostly spruce. It flattened out again near the peak where planks had been laid over pools of mud and standing water. This small mountain may have named “bald” but there were trees all the way to the top and the only way to enjoy the views was to climb the tower which offered us magnificent views Mooselookmeguntic Lake just to our west and Rangeley Lake to the east.

This moderate 2.3 mile hike close to Oquossoc climbs to a fire lookout with 360° views across the Rangeley lakes and mountains, though most of the trail is through forest and the views are found mostly at the summit. Although it isn’t a loop, there are two trailheads (which meet about one third of the way up), so a lower loop would be possible (which would entail walking along the Bald Mountain and Carry Roads). Dogs are permitted but must be leashed though not all were (one was even allowed to clamber and sit on the picnic table). The shorter hike took us two leisurely hours with a stop at the top.

Access: the longer way up starts from the Haines Landing parking (Carry Road), while the other trailhead is located just past the Bald Mountain Camps Resort, on the left hand side of the road and includes a generous off-road parking and toilet.

Hike (shorter route): the trail starts off gradually in an airy, mature, deciduous forest of sugar maples and white birch on a well marked and maintained gravel trail. Some ten minutes later it crosses the trail coming from Haines Landing and starts climbing, with more tree roots across the path. The forest becomes denser and more mixed, the trail gradient steepens and the path becomes increasingly rocky. As you approach the summit, the forest turns mostly to scrubby red spruce and you encounter some sections which require scrambling over rocks.

Summit: bare granite rocks dotted with spruce, two picnic tables and crowned by a fire lookout with sweeping 360° views over the Rangeley, Cupsuptic and Mooselookmeguntic Lakes as well as the Saddleback, Height of Land and Elephant Mountains. On a clear day, you’ll even catch sight of Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

Tip: this is a great spot from which to view fall foliage, as well as wildlife such as deer and elk (though we saw just a toad, albeit a very attractive one) in the autumn (make sure to wear bright colours during the October to November hunting season), though the views from the top are fantastic all year round (on a clear day, obviously).

We did this hike for the first time today and we were amazed. The view at the top was breath taking! It was worth all the effort it took to get there. Definitely a moderate hike. My 6 & 9 year old had a blast. They found it challenging but not overwhelming. Some of my family members are short in stature. They struggled up the second half where it gets steep. Good shoes are a must!

This was a great first hike for our 28 month old and almost 4 year old girls. We would rate this challenging for that reason and moderate if it was only the two of us. The view is amazing and worth the trip. We followed up with sandwiches and ice cream at Moosely Bagels in Rangeley. Great day.

If you are staying near Oquossoc, the first 20-30 minutes of the Bald Mountain trail is a good morning workout, without the more challenging higher rock scramble to the top. It has a steady incline and as other reader's have mentioned, uneven footing - but that will help you work on your balance! It's a great workout *and* a hike, for those days when the AT or Aziscohos seem daunting. Up and back, from the parking lot should take 40-60 minutes round trip. Stop when you reach the first "steep" rock part. You can take the mid-way turn out to the boat parking lot. That's longer and wetter, and has several of those split log "bridges". It's not as well traveled, so the trail is more overgrown. The toilet at the start of the trail, none at the top.
