First time I was at Height of Land was on a pristine fall day at the peak of color. Never to be forgotten. Pictures could not do it justice - it had to be experienced and absorbed.

Apparently the this overlook along a logging road evolved over the years. Before the area was marketed a an all-year destination the only regular recreational visitors were sports fishermen looking to land large trout and land-locked salmon. Now there is the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway...More

We drove the Scenic Highway which was great and this place provided an expansive view of the valley below and the fall colors. It was raining which spoiled it for us.

Granted, we saw this on a rainy day, but I'm not clear what all of the fuss is about. You can park in a paved lot beside Rt 17 and see the view which is pretty, but not unique for Maine. You don't have to...More

See the lakes from above; learn about history & geology from the info kiosks. If it's on your route, pull into the overlook and enjoy the breathtaking view.

The vastness of the view and the complete silence except for the calls of soaring birds of prey, makes you want to hang out here eternally.

The expansive view made us wish we had time to explore the lake area below. The signs give interesting history, including that of Student Island, first explored by Yale students in the 1800's
