Able Baker Contemporary is a great new addition at 29 Forest Avenue-- nice opening show on American Optimism. They featured women as well as men-- an issue with contemporary art. And the staff/interns are eager to help you understand.

Hits for us were the good art store, nice visit to the Maine College of Art. You'll find something to enjoy if you leave yourself open to it. Getting better!

It is never boring there at any history and art related place during the art walk. Enjoy a lot visiting Museum of Art, Maine College of Art, Roux&Cyr Gallery and all the galleries along the way.

Arts District ? More like a freak show with a ton of shady characters and homeless people begging for money. Dingy building, area hasn't been cleaned in months

Love this part of Old Portland. So much to see and the art is fabulous. We have gone there now for 5 years and always find something new.

We went to Portland , Maine Art Walk, on August 7 , and it is held - First Friday of each month, 5:00 to 8:00 pm... Very special. Congress Street , downtown Portland, Maine was supposed to be shut off to traffic during the Art Walk but .... ahem... it was not.. Nonetheless, this event is a great visit... Gallery's... More

Portland is a charming little city facing the sea. Nice cobalt streets and brick architecture. Several local shops and small restaurants. But it doesn't deserve a detour. There are so many beautiful things to see around. The arts district is not particularly exciting.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Portland’s Arts District, even though it was still very much a work in progress. Its major draws were Portland Museum of Art, Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine, Maine College of Art, and Institute of Contemporary Art. During a late summer First Friday Art Walk along Congress Street, I browsed several of the many... More

Lots of things to see and do; lots of energy and plenty of art. Well-organized maps and listings of exhibits and art. Make an evening of it and buy some art! Can be crowded but it's a friendly (and awfully literate) crowd.

Why do we rarely ever get amazing artists who are not "has been?" I guess if you are now on the D list Portland, Maine will still have ya! It's too bad we have to drive to Boston or N.Y if we want to see a great concert or play.
