Prior posts indicated a free parking lot just behind the City Hall. We circled all over and never found it. Finally parked in a commercial lot and paid almost $50. While on the trolley tour, our guide pointed to a lot near the visitor center and said it was $15 for all day! Wish we had known that!
This rest of Portland was great. The trolley tour was really fun but hard to take pictures. We only saw 2 homeless people and they didn't bother anyone.

Although we enjoyed walking around for a couple of hours….the parking garages are a rip off. Most that we saw don’t post hourly rates and at one, we were charged $20 for less than 2 hours. No attendant on sight to ask for an explaination.

If you are looking for authentic Maine shopping and a ton of quality gifts to take back home, I would recommend visiting the Commercial Street area. Having never been to Portland, we were not sure what to expect but we quickly spotted all the nice stores along the street and found a few open spots (only parallel street parking available). Lots of great stores with wonderful gifts to take back home with us. Plenty of places to eat in this area as well. No shortage of ice cream shops either. Beautiful architecture around each corner.

Very busy, exciting, filled with tourists. There are several wharves to explore, lots of nice shops, bars and restaurants. Loads of sightseeing trips by boat (ferries, schooners, sailboats, windjammers), bus, trolley, and the famous Duck Tour by land and sea. The Old Port portion of the Commercial Street area is the best! Our latest visit here was to take the ferry to Peaks Island ($2 round trip this time of year, what a deal!) and have pizza and drinks at one of the waterfront restaurants.

Portland was our second stop in my NCL Cruise. We were there from 7am to 2pm. A bit disappointing because the only places open were coffee shops. Most other shops opened about 10am. We made the best of it and found a delicious spot for breakfast!!! We took in some sights and photos around town. There was a Salt Store there which had a salt room. I spent a fair amount of time there and will definitely plan a salt therapy session ahead of time if I every go back. Wish I would have seen it/known about it earlier in the day. I would have had plenty of time before getting back to the ship. The day started out very foggy and rainy, but by the time we left, the clouds were gone, the sky was blue and the sun was out!!! Turned out to be a beautiful day, even used the pool on the ship. The view of the harbor upon the ships departure was very beautiful. Make sure you check it out.

Nice buildings and views but I was shocked at how many homeless people I saw. I was in portland 5 years ago and I did not see this. What a sad situation. I hope the city of Portland addresses this sad situation before it impacts tourism. I know I don't plan to return. I was not at all comfortable with what I saw on the street while I walked with my kids.

This was the first place we headed when we drove into Portland. Finding a parking place was hard, but we managed. (Watch out for the "private" parking spaces that charge outrageous prices. Stick to those marked as "public" parking.) The traffic is slow through here with people crossing the road and cars looking for places to park.

We walked the area, picked up lunch, and later dessert. It was a pretty area and even in late June the weather was very nice!

Commercial Street is great any time of year, although it can get really crowded with tourists in the peak summer months. There's so much to see and do -- restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, historic architecture, tours, ferries, etc. We went to the annual St. Patrick's Day parade that runs along Commercial Street (see photos).

For some reason there are 1,000, 000 people visiting this small town of 66,000. They do a pretty nice job. Nor a lot of problems. They maintain a classy atmosphere and booming restaurant scene. Attractive early 20th century maritime commercial district pumped up to a tourist mecca.

We've been here twice when in Portland. Parking can be tough but there is street parking and parking lots if you are making a day of it. Easy access to the water attractions such as Lucky Catch and Old Portland Sailing Company. Try the many good restaurants such as the Porthole for great seafood. Also try Brickyard Hollow Brewery for great beer/drinks and get the gouda fries they are awesome. Great place to pick up some souvenirs. Things tend to close early so plan your day accordingly.
