I usually visit Portland once a year when visiting Maine. This year I was taken by surprise with the number of homeless people on the green visibly impaired by drugs walking around dazed and some were twitching, wandering and begging at storefronts on commercial street. This is obviously a major mental health & substance use disorder issue not being addressed in Portland it was sad and disturbing. Don’t think I will subject myself to that again. I felt very unsafe.

Commercial Street is the heart of the Old Port. Trains used to run on Commercial street right into the late 1960s/early 1970s. The cobble stones have been mostly paved over.

Commercial Street sits right across from the bay and has lots of shops, restaurants, and bars. It’s a nice quaint street with brick faced buildings in the center of the action.
