- lulu1237 contributionsThe ferries are nice. Things run on time and smoothly. The ferries go to several of the islands near the mainland of Portland, it’s also used to transport goods to the islands. There’s a Wyland mural next to where the Peaks Island ferry boards, which was really cool. For tourists, I’d recommend going on a day trip to Peaks Island.Visited October 2024Traveled soloWritten October 4, 2024
- Eleni75Charlottesville, Virginia137 contributionsThe mailboat trip (I took the noon ferry, 3 hours) was a wonderful thing to do! Sunny clear day, flat calm water, beautiful views, interesting stops where you watch the crew unload things. It was 70 degrees but felt cooler out on the water. I was glad I brought a fleece. Inexpensive and enjoyable.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten August 7, 2024
- Kim V2 contributionsWe ride the nail boat ferry on a 3 hour trip. We made 4-5 stops delivering nail as well as wood for someone building on the island. There were 5 of us! Beautiful day and a great ride. We even took our lunch and had our picnic on the boat. Affordable great trip!Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 9, 2024
- Wanda RPawling, New York245 contributionsDespite an unseasonably cool spring afternoon, Mom and her 20 something daughters thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon on the water. Our guide Anna shared numerous details about the wartime and settlement history around the bay and many of its islands. The 1:45 hours spent on the cruise was well worth it. For folks preferring a less windy experiece, there's plenty of seating inside.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 6, 2024
- Ken GBloomfield, Connecticut69 contributionsA terrific and inexpensive way to see the islands and get a feel for what living there is like. Boat was no frills: no food, but plenty of seats and a bathroom. Bring your favorite food. Watching the crew load and unload the cargo is interesting. We saw them deliver a washer and dryer, mail, a lot of Amazon, and a pickup truck.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 17, 2024
- cjyapGriswold, Connecticut937 contributionsWhile there are a ton of Portland Bay touring options, this was the most unique. We took Mail Boat Ferry, which tours around Portland Bay while also dropping off and picking up passengers on the surrounding Islands. It also is the way the mail gets delivered to the islands. The whole ride takes a little less than 3 hours. You buy the tickets the day you want to ride it. It is a commuter ferry, so potentially it could fill up, but we had no issues. It was interesting to watch the mail and deliveries get loaded onto the boat. Initially we sat up front on the Bow. The view is best from there. The Captain narrated as we were passing sights and nearing docks. We learned about some of the islands and the surrounding area. You do pass some lighthouse, but not all, so if that's your priority, there are better choices. Halfway through our ride, it did start to rain. The back of the boat is covered but open, and we stayed dry there while still having a nice view. There is also seating inside, but you can't see nearly as well. About 1/2 through the journey we docked at one island and stayed there for 1/2 hour. You can get off the boat and walk around if you want. There's a small store. Since it was raining we didn't get off, and would have been fine if the boat left sooner. Oh well. I thoroughly enjoyed this ride and recommend it.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 29, 2024
- Odyssey200118643 contributionsYou can't go to Portland, Maine and not experience some time out on the water. The Casco Bay Ferry terminal on Commercial street is the spot you want. Right in the heart of the action, just a few blocks from many of the best hotels in the Old Port area and offering lots of rides to the places you want to see. We took the ferry out to Peaks Island one day and took the three hour ferry "Mail Run' another. Both were great trips though we liked the mail run the best because you are out on the water for several hours and you get to see lots of islands and wildlife. We spotted lots of birds and even a dolphin on our ride. Take the earliest ferry at 8am for a less crowded experience. We had the whole front top deck to ourselves for the first two hours. Don't forget to bring some drinks and something to eat because there's no getting off once the ferry leaves the dock. There's a small but clean restroom on the main deck.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 10, 2024
- njgramps317 contributionsA very pleasant and enjoyable time on calm seas. The naration was interesting when one could hear it. The scenery was beautiful as the ship went from stop to stop. One could see the ruins of a shipwreck, nice houses, beautiful mansions asn a few estates while observing people get on and off the ferry.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 4, 2024
- maryofmassachusettsPlymouth, Massachusetts769 contributions10 am Mail Run, just 2.5 hours is great fun! Found the perfect blue sky day and really enjoyed this trip. Narrative gave highlights along the way. Perfect for getting out on the water and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast of Maine. Makes me want to explore each island on its own.Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 17, 2024

I can honestly say Casco Bay Lines crew really does go above & beyond.
The classic Maine background is beautiful but you can't help but recognize the people behind the scenes.
These folks work so hard everyday, moving freight & ensuring a great ride full of historical information.
I ride the ferry twice a day, everyday through rain, fog or shine, I'm never disappointed & without a doubt always felt safe
The thing that really sticks out the most is their sense of humor & kindness when they see fimiliar faces.
I had promised my child I'd give Pig a big day out for an adventure of a life time
Casco bay lines really helped achieve it today
I truly couldn't ask for a better commute or a better crew

We took the early morning ferry run for their mail route.
I really recommend this trip because you get to go to many different islands and do sight scene from the boat. You do not get off the boat. We paid fourteen dollars a person.

We took the Ferry from Portland to Peak's Island. There were 3 Adults and one child (age 5) and the cost was just south of $30 although I don't remember the exact ticket prices. The Terminal was under going renovations and was a bit of a mess as a result, but they did the best they could under construction circumstances. Being a transportation hub they made annoying announcements every 15 minutes about mask requirements, and the signs threatening Federal Prosecution for failure to comply had a Stalinist feel to it. But we waited out the magical boundary of the terminal and removed our masks or comfort. We ended up taking the car Ferry both way, which was fine. Loading was done quickly and efficiently, and the Ferry was piloted effortlessly by the crew. The trip is short, maybe 15 minutes, and affords a nice view of the Harbor. If the weather is nice, sit up on the top deck for the best experience. It was not over crowded either to or from Peak's, I'd say about 50% capacity both ways. All in all it was basic transportation, preformed well by the crew, and provided at fair cost.

This could become a habit. We took the ferry to Peaks Island again on a November day that felt like summer. Hardly any tourists this time. The views to and from the island were beautiful, especially on the way back because it was close to sunset. Caso Bay Lines ferry service is great -- so easy and inexpensive.

I would either avoid this company at all costs or I would definitely watch myself every step of the way. My wife and I bought a ticket from Craig at the ticket office and asked where our boat was. He pointed out back of the building and said it’ll be at gate five. We sat in line with everybody else that was back here and as a lady was done loading carts on a boat she waved everybody over. We handed her our tickets and got on the boat. Once the boat started to move there was an announcement on where the boat was going and our island was not on that list. This boat was going to make several stops. I attempted to find somebody on the boat but there was no crew they were all locked upstairs behind closed doors. We had to ride 25 minutes to an island we didn’t need to go to. After I told the lady what happened she told us that we could get off the boat and wait for a return boat. So we got off on a strange island where there was nobody there and nothing to do and waited for the return boat to head back to Portland. Once I got back I explained to Craig the mixup and what it happened and he proceeded to charge us for two more tickets to go to our original island which was peaks Island. Craig was extremely rude and made it all sound like it was my fault. I told him there’s no way I’m paying for two more tickets to go to the place I initially intended to go to. He walked away and said he had to talk to a supervisor. After a few minutes Craig came back and said “you’re in luck he said I could give you two more tickets“ Craig was very smug and rude and put all the blame on us as he had a smug smile through the glass window during the whole transaction. Unfortunately I’m not sure if there’s another option to get to those islands and I’m sure that’s why he feels he can treat people that way. If you see Craig tell him I said hi.

Our kayak tour guide highly recommended a visit to Peaks Island on the Casco Bay Lines Ferry. We were mot disappointed. It was an enjoyable, convenient ferry ride and the island is beautiful. Very worthwhile.Tip -- Wish we had known ahead of time that you can rent golf carts, which would have been fun but they were sold out by people who had reserved them before their visit. The ferry is a wonderful way to get around all of the islands and it offers several options. Definitely a highlight of our trip.

So rude! I'm sure the ferry ride to Peaks Island itself is nice, but I wouldn't know. I read on the website the rates for the ferry ride during the off season, read that we could take our car - but never read anything about having to purchase our tickets in the ferry terminal before boarding. When we arrived, we saw signs to get into the car line, so that's what we did. We assumed, as with other ferries we have been on, that we would give our money to the attendant before boarding. Good thing that we were the last car in the line because the attendant informed us that we were supposed to purchase our tickets at the terminal before lining up, so we had to reverse to get out. We could have done without her adding "Don't ever get in line for public transportation in the future without a ticket." I could not believe how rude she was to people who were obviously from out of town. I'm fine with skipping this ferry ride for other interesting activities in Portland. Also didn't help that the rates she quoted before we turned around were higher than the rates I had read on the website. This place needs clearer instructions on their website on the cost and process to ride the ferry, and an attitude adjustment for some of its staff.

The facility was under long-needed renovation along its western side walkway and at its eastern street entrance. A limited spring season ferry schedule was in use, but charging summer season fares. All he usual pandemic protocols were in place. Tickets agents accepted credit cards only, no cash. Although it was a beautiful weekend morning, the ticketing area felt deserted. I appreciated all that I found here; I disliked only the limited ferry services.

I agree with other mentions about the mailrun cruise. Only about $14 for a senior, 3 hours out in the bay along all the islands. We stopped at about 5 islands I think, watched them unload all sorts of packages - Amazon as well as dog food and groceries lol. One stop was long enough to get off and grab an ice cream or drink from the local general store. Yes, there was a little commentary but you had to be sitting near the speakers as everyone was talking. Definitely recommend

Best Value in Portland! We took the Peak's Island Ferry for just $7.70 per Adults and $3.85 Child!
The boats are clean and fast just 17 minutes across the bay to Peaks island. They run almost every hour on the hour so you can shoot across the bay have a beer or an ice cream and be back in the Oldport in an hour!
We rented bikes and spent 1.5hrs. riding around the island which was also great fun.

What time is the mail boat? Do you need advance reservations?
Thanks
Written May 15, 2024
How far in advance do they allow you to start boarding?
Written January 28, 2020
Not more than 20 minutes or so. People were gathered outside for quite some time before boarding because there was plenty to see while the crew loaded the boat. The time probably varies depending on what is being sent out to the islands.

We would like to take the sunset cruise. How do we purchase tickets? Is there any way to guarantee a spot on this ferry? Approximately what time does this ferry depart (we will be there 9/13/19).
Written July 9, 2019
Easy walk up and purchase at their booth as others have said. Go early in the morning or the day before, if you are able. Good luck!

We will be there in August and will already be doing the Lucky Catch Cruise, which includes some sightseeing. Will be be missing anything if we can only pick one cruise (not this one)? Not sure if 3 hours on this mail run cruise will be too boring for us. Has anybody done both that would recommend one over the other?
Written March 6, 2019
I don't know the Lucky Catch Cruise, but the Mailbot Run is a great one! We did this as a family once during the day for my daughter's birthday! We brought a picnic and ate on the boat. If it's a hot day, it's nice to sit on the deck and feel cool and see the great sites! The Diamond Pass Run would be another great option. You still see some great nooks and crannies of Casco Bay, but it's about one hour shorter.
Written March 6, 2019
A ferry trip this time of year isn't worth doing. It's usually quit cold on the open water in Casco Bay. The winter ferry schedule is minimal, with few options for excursions. There is little snow now, and commonly less snow on the islands than onshore. There are minimal services on the islands; and those few that do exist have skeletal schedules. A visit to nearby lighthouses in Cape Elizabeth and South Portland or time spent kicking around in the Old Port would be a better choice for most of us.

Yes, there are restrooms on board. It was a wonderful way to see A LOT without spending A LOT! The captain gives you great information on the various islands you cruise past.
Hope this helps!

Our cruise will stop in Portland from 8AM to 5PM, is that enough time to catch this Mail Boat?
Does anyone know if we can walk from the cruise port?
Written August 22, 2018
Yes..you can catch the 10 am departure. I don't know where the cruise ship tender will drop you off but it can't be too far. No food on the boat...just a couple of vending machines.

Hi, I am interested to visit one of the islands. We will arrive around 8-9pm at Portland and will leave to Nova Scotia st 2.30pm wondering we we have time for one island tour. What should we see? I was hoping you are a local! Thanks.
Written August 13, 2018
Yes, You can visit Peaks Island. It is a 20 minute ferry ride and you can take a tour which is 75 minutes or rent a bike or rent a golf cart or you can simply walk. the walk around the island which is mostly on the water fronted streets is 4 miles.
