We routed the International Appalachian Trail through the forests, mountains, and across and along the rivers that now comprise the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument. Visit it soon before it becomes a full national park with commensurate visitation. Plan your visit so that you...More

The new national monument is beautiful beyond words but not for the faint hearted. We rented an SUV for the visit and given the rough roads, were happy we had. Before going to the park, I recommend stopping at the almost unmarked visitor center in...More

Check the website if you venture before the end of May as we found out the gates were just opened the day we ventured due to mud season and muddy roads needing time to dry out before driving on. I strongly suggest staying on Rte...More

It's been on our list since it was created this year. It's remote and rough and just in it's infancy. But what and experience. The park offers a roughly 16 mile dirt loop road with spectator views and hikes a few camp sites and this...More

A friend had told us recently that KWWNM was not especially worth a visit — second-growth forest and uninteresting. We went anyway and were overwhelmed. The leaf color must be near peak now and, second-growth or not, it was spectacular, particularly set against the backdrop...More

That Katahdin Wood and Waters National Monument is a very new and nice NPS site. The main visitor center is located on Penobscot Street in downtown Millinocket which is usually staffed by one volunteer, open daily until 4pm. Access is free of charge. Enjoy!

This is a chance to see a very new National Monument and think about what it might be like a decade from now. There is currently a loop road with trails off it. The Mt Barnard Trail is a bit boring to start with but...More
