About
Mahoosuc Guide Service is a small family run business with over years of experience. All of our trips are owner guided and a high percentage of our clients are returning as friends. Polly and Kevin are professional year round guides, equally comfortable poling a canoe up the Allagash or driving a dog team across the sea ice of Hudson Bay.Mahoosuc is unique in that we make much of the equipment we use on our guided trips, such as cedar canvas canoes, ash dog sleds and maple paddles. We have found the traditional equipment and materials we use to be durable, functional and in many ways preferable to today's high technology outdoor equipment. The craftsmanship that goes into our equipment is an extension of the care we put into each of our trips. We have traveled extensively in the north with the Cree and Inuit and many of the techniques we use for Northwoods and tundra travel were developed by them. We are also working with Native Penobscots in the state of Maine.

Mahoosic Guide Service in Newry, Maine is the real deal! We booed a 3 day dog sled and camping trip for late December, 2020. Polly and Kevin, the owners, are clearly very experienced and knowledgeable guides. We were impressed from the moment of our arrival to our departure. From the beautiful timber frames lodge to the experience of hands on learning about dog sledding we were mesmerized. Due to weather conditions, (lack of snow in Maine in December) we were offered a refund and a future trip but we decided to go up anyway. Polly and Kevin were great hosts and adjusted our itinerary when it snowed to a great dog sled experience on the lake.

We recommend them without hesitation to anyone looking for a unique adventure done in a safe, exciting and professional wayI

We had a great mushing experience with Kevin & Lily. The weather was not perfect during this end of Dec trip (not much snow & rather warm), but Kevin has such a good knowledge of the place, and love of his dogs, that he was able to make us enjoy the trip. After an hour or so of dogsledding, we set up the camp. Lily prepared dinner in the main tent, while Kevin kept us warm at the stove, with plenty of stories about his up-north experience.
The night was amazingly comfortable on a layer of fir. In the morning, it was time to prepare the dogs, pack & sled back via another route over the lake.

If you are seeking an authentic dogsledding excursion, you don't have to look any further!! Our family's experience was nothing short of amazing!!

Polly and Kevin are professional guides, fully certified and a master in their profession. What's more is that they genuinely care about their guests and deeply love and attend to their Yukon Huskies which are clearly apart of their family. We stayed at their very cozy farmhouse which was our home away from home. Polly, Kevin and their assistants Tom, Lilly, and Joe were also quite exceptional and made our stay comfortable and rememberable. We particularly enjoyed their company and our conversations over homemade breakfast which by the way was delicious and well planned.

During our day trip we were able to take in the beautiful sites of Umbagog Lake which is only 15 minutes away from the lodge. During the outing we stopped for lunch which was a very nice compliment to our outing. The soup was hearty and we were served hot tea, cocoa, bread and snacks over pleasant conversations. The entire experience just warms you to your soul. The dog team was eager to please and quite impressive. I found myself mesmerized by their strength and beauty. My son, who is 12, really got a kick out of taking to the sled rails while he mushed with Polly.

I would be remiss if I did not mention how incredibly lovable and affectionate the dogs are while they are off the clock. Honestly, this was such an incredible family experience and the memories will last us a lifetime which is priceless!!!

We are forever grateful and I find myself already plotting and scheming another adventure with Polly and Kevin.

Sending all of our best from the Pagodin family!!

Since I was a teenager it was always on my bucket list to paddle the Allagash. In 2018 I retired from a burdensome career and signed up to paddle the river with Mahoosuc guide service (MGS). It was better than wonderful!! All I had to do was show up, they provided all the gear and it was good stuff. The river was beautiful, the sights, smells, scenery, distant mountain views were gorgeous. Polly and associate guides were wonderful and fun to be with. They were attentive, careful, observant and caring and brought campfire cooking to an epicurean level.
In March 2019 I went on a dog sled winter camping trip with Kevin and Polly. It also was great. Safety was paramount. The dogs were eager, energetic and affectionate. The camp was something out of a Jack London novel. Each tent had a small wood stove and was roasty toasty warm. Food was great and plentiful. Kevin and Polly made sure everyone was warm, well fed, safe, happy.
Then in May 2019 I went on a three day canoe trip with my wife and another couple and they are not campers. We had a great time. The four of us and two lady guides saw loons and moose and beaver and sunsets.
And then in August I went with MGS to paddle 170 miles on the Yukon River in Alaska. Another experience of a lifetime. Better than wonderful. I reminisce about these trips every day.
Once this pandemic is over Polly and Kevin will not be able to get rid of me. I am getting older, I need to pack it in and do a lot of this stuff while I still can.
Kevin and Polly are the models of Maine Master Guides against whom all others should be compared. Their knowledge, experience, people skills are exemplary.

I can’t say enough about what an incredible 4 day trip I had with Polly and her dogs. She has a wealth of experience and you can truly tell how much she loves sharing her knowledge. I learned so much in the short weekend getaway, about the dogs, winter camping, the land, and life in general. The dogs are well loved and some of my favorite memories will be the interactions I shared with them including our animal communication session. Polly even had tips for how to walk my husky so she doesn’t drag me and it works!! Dave cooked the most delicious camp food and guided us through the gorgeous forest skiing, we even saw some fresh moose tracks. I highly recommend this trip for anyone who has a desire to learn about dogsledding, winter camping, and even getting in touch with the land. What Mahoosuc Guide Service has curated for the winter season is beautiful in the rawest form. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again and am looking forward to what summer brings from them as well!!

My wife and I had a truly Great experience doing a Dog Sledding Day trip on Lake Umbagog in Maine, with Polly and Kevin. They are very knowledgeable and just great people. We even got to help prepare the dogs for our trip. We had a delicious light lunch of homemade soup, and bagels cooked over a campfire, at a small campsite they maintain. We enjoyed the quiet and the scenery along the lake, and we even saw an eagle.
Safety of their guests and dogs is a priority with Polly and Kevin as a snowmobile followed behind in the event of an unforeseen emergency.
It was very obvious the dogs are very well cared for and much loved. We truly enjoyed the dogs and the entire experience.
Kevin built the sleds and the craftmanship is outstanding.
We would recommend Mahoosuc Guide Service without hesitation for anyone to take this adventure with Polly and Kevin.

I chose the Way of the Wabenaki canoe trip because it fit my schedule and there weren't any portages. The trip combines two kinds of adventure: one that fulfills our love of the outdoors, and one that allows us to explore another culture. In four days, through the generous presence of tribal leaders and artists, you learn about the history, craft, music, and everyday tools of the Penobscot, as well as their current daily lives. It’s clear that Polly has spent years developing relationships with the tribe and the resulting trust leads to a rewarding trip. And there's plenty of canoeing on a gorgeous stretch of the Penobscot River.

I've enjoyed several dog sled trips with Kevin and Polly. I've loved everything about my trips with them. The dogs are super sweet, playful and inspiring to work with. Kevin and Polly are excellent wilderness guides and educator. They each bring their own unique world perspective to the trips. These guys are the best and run one of the highest quality outdoor programs to be found anywhere.

Paddling the Allagash has been on my bucket list ever since I saw the video done by Deborah Gardner and her husband Greg Nolan (see the video gallery). 2020 put it on hold but I finally got the opportunity in September 2021.

Everything exceeded my expectations, having been an avid canoeist for over 50 years and retiring from a career in logistics, I was thoroughly impressed with the knowledge, organization, skills and expertise of Kevin and Jean, and I am not easy to impress.

This is only the second canoe trip I have gone on where I gained weight, the food was awesome - I led most of the prior ones and can honestly say I don't hold a candle to them.

Took a 6-day canoe trip on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway with Polly. Beautiful trip, beautiful wilderness, great guide (pleasant, organized, careful), excellent paddling companions, great food, excellent canoes and camping/cooking equipment.

Lucked out and had only one major rainy afternoon, but the river was high for fall, making the paddling quicker and easier than usual for that time of year. As a result there was lots of time for cooking and baking and conversation during lazy afternoons and evenings.
