Excellent original Native American artifacts. This little museum is open year round. The museum curator is very friendly and knowledgeable. It's free to get into. I bought a few items in the gift shop to offer some support.

Wonderful Native American Museum with Super Friendly Owners
Jun 2019
We met Nowetah and her husband, Tom Cyr early this year, 2019. We visited their museum and gift shop this Summer.
It was truly a wonderful experience. Everything is neatly and nicely detailed. The owners are wonderful people.
Very educational and informative.
We recommend this museum highly as a Must See.

So happy we stumbled upon this place!
Sep 2017 • Couples
My husband and I were driving through Maine to New Brunswick for our honeymoon and stopped in here along the way. The owner greeted us in the driveway and gave us a history of the area and told us about the store and museum. There were beautiful handmade items from different tribes and at the back a wonderful museum about the people and how they lived and developed over time. It was really worth the stop, just be aware they only accept cash and American only.

Interesting spot to gain cultural insight and Maine history

I'm surprised that my family had never stopped here when I was growing up, but I'm glad I went when I was passing through the area in August. The museum area of the building is small, but it's packed with artifacts, photos, and information. There are sections for indigenous groups from all over the world, but I was most interested in understanding more about Maine's Indian groups. I loved the little "quick facts" write-ups they had, as well as some interesting photos. When I went, Nowetah's husband, Tom, was working, and he was happy to chat with me about the goods in the store, history, current events, and more. It was definitely worth stopping in and is probably one of the best ways to learn about Native American history in Maine.

An Afternoon Well Spent
Sep 2015 • Friends
For several years, I've heard about the wonders of Nowetah's Indian Museum & Store located in New Portland and wanted to visit. None of our party were disappointed! Although small in size, it's filled to overflowing with all sorts of artifacts, many of which are from Maine tribes. The basket room alone will take your breath away with its wide array of local tribal baskets and those from afar. One of the co-curators, Tom Cyr, husband of Nowetah, was available to answer our questions. Such fascinating history! What we thought would be a half an hour visit, turned into a 90 minute travel through time. It's a memorable place well worth checking out!
And while in New Portland, don't miss the Wire Bridge located not too far from the museum - another must see!

Very Impressive museum & gift shop

Went on a drive to admire the fall foliage. Stopped in to this very nice location. I was impressed with the amount of Indian handmade arts & crafts on display. Tribes of Maine as well as from all parts of the US & Canada were represented. All were very clearly labeled with descriptive signs that gave you a feel for the background & cultural heritage of the past & present Indians This is well worth a visit if you are in the area of Western Maine. This is not a good attraction for young children. (Touching things on display is not allowed.)

Worth stopping by to see the amazing, diverse and beautiful collection of baskets. There are also other artifacts. And the store has a variety of goods -- picked up several gifts.

Small and Fascinating Labor of Love
Jul 2015 • Couples
This is a small, fascinating Native American Museum owned by an Indian woman and her husband. Although it is small, it was wonderful. You can tell there was much love and devotion in their selection, preparation, and arrangement of the hundreds of small, medium, and large item displays throughout the building. The baskets are amazing! Every exhibit had painstaking small, hand-lettered tags describing the history and origin of the particular piece. You could just tell it was a labor of love by the couple involved. When we visited, it was the husband's turn to "mind the store", and he couldn't have been any friendlier or nicer. We loved talking with him. They also sell Native American CD's, jewelry, moccasins, tee shirts, sweatshirts, pottery, purses, fridge magnets, and candy sticks for 50 cents. This museum has an amazing amount of things to look at for a small building. It is just down a short road right off the main road. Look for the sign. Loved this attraction and the people who own and run it.
