Worth the steep hike all the way up [though there is a road at the top that would help those who aren't sturdy hikers]. Late afternoon we 3 were the only ones there for a good hour. Most of the plants are labeled, in manicured beds. Not a place for children to run around, nor for loud talkers/socializing. It's contemplative... More

It is easy to miss the parking lot when you just get thrilled with the nice harbor view. It is 200 steps rock steps up the mountain before you reach the garden. There are two view point on this step trail and both give you a nice view. The garden mixed with formal English flower beds with little Japanese influences.... More

We spent a couple of hours wandering up the hill overlooking the harbor, then touring the lodge, ending with a walk through the gardens. All in all, the most relaxing thing we did all week. Beautiful.

We visited the gardens and lodge in late June with our 12 and 14 year old. Apparently you can drive and park next to the gardens or park on the highway below and hike up to them. We did the latter and are glad we took the hike. It is not very long (about 10 minutes of walking) or difficult... More

Just down the road from Asticou Azalea Gardens (separate review), these gardens are very different and yet just as interesting. The first hurdle is getting yourself parked, because the lot is small and a little inconspicuous, and then you cross the road to the beginning of the trail (we also found a parking lot at the site of the gardens,... Park in the lot at the bottom of the walkway up to the garden. Even though there are 200 steps there are lots of flat areas and benches on the way up. The views of the harbor are amazing! Once at the top it is a short walk to the beautiful gardens. Stop and admire the hand carved door at... More

Walk up the hill to Curtis Lodge and Thuya Gardens. You can drive but take the hike. The gardens are well maintained and a 100 year old lodge.

We had visited Thuya before, in the late summer, when there are abundant flowers, and in early june did not expect to see much abloom. Indeed, they were still setting out annuals in the beds, following an intricate set of diagrams set out on a little work-table. But the meconopsis was flowering (the fabulous blue himalayan poppy)! The lawns were... More

We visited this week (early June) which is not when the garden is at its most spectacular. If you're a gardener, however, it's a great time - the bones of the mixed beds are apparent. Although my garden is much (much, much, much) smaller, I got some great ideas for mixing perennial/annual combinations, and how to plant drifts through a... More

I've visited here twice in early to mid-October and the gardens are still FULL of flowers. It's a photographers dream. Take the hike up, or just drive and park at the top of the hill. It's a really beautiful, serene place worth seeing.
