a hidden gem
Sep 2021
This place is not obvious - the sign is hardly noticeable, it's up a long winding very narrow road - a bit nerve wracking when a car comes the other way, as one of you must find a place to pull off. However, it was worth it - the gardens were STUNNING. I was shocked what was still in bloom at the very end of September. So much variety and blooms larger than my outspread hand. Lots of butterflies and bumble bees. I took approximately 9 million pictures. For $5 pp, it's a bargain. We spent maybe 45 minutes.

Garden and then go onto the trails
Jul 2021 • Family
Possibly favorite spot near Acadia. The gardens are beautiful as are Asticou gardens and both are pretty quick to discover. At Thuya there is a door that makes you feel you are entering a fairytale kingdom. It’s like a portal to a magical wooded trail w moss, winding trails and rocks and trees. Beautiful way to get into nature and one day we had the trails to ourselves and one day passed on other family. From there go to Northeast Harbor and have delicious food and drinks at 123 Main. What a perfect day.

Wonderful Walk and Great Gardens!
Oct 2019
When visiting, I parked in the lower parking lot and started walking up the path/steps to the top. Lovely views over the harbor and really peaceful, despite being fairly close to the road. My slightly injured knee wasn’t liking it, but I knew it wasn’t that long. I just took my time resting my knee at the available seating. A little over half way up, a worker met me saying that they needed my car moved from the parking. I was thinking, shoot, I have to walk back down now without getting to the top via the path. But I didn’t say anything. However, she simply offered to take my keys, walk back down, drive my car to the top, and meet me there! Ah, the energy of the young. But more importantly, the amazing kindness of this young woman. I was very grateful…and bonus, I wouldn’t have to subject my knee to the walk down! At the top where the main flower beds are, I couldn’t believe how much was in bloom at this late date. I especially loved the wide variety of dahlias. Great visit and I hope to return.

A MUST see attraction on Mt. Desert Island
Sep 2019
The Thuya Gardens, located at NortheastHarbor, is definitely not to be missed. No matter what the season you are visiting the Gardens, it is stunningly beautiful. Originally a private summer home and gardens, in addition to the grounds themselves, the residential "lodge" is just breathtaking and which serves as a modestly-sized museum about not only Thuya but the area in general.

An oasis of beauty and peace in the park
Oct 2019
This was a pleasant surprise on our tour of Acadia National Park. Away from the traditional sights, wonderful place to spend an hour to enjoy nature in a peaceful and beautiful setting. Small, but that means you can walk it all in an hour or so. $5 entry on an honor system, well worth the cost.

Gorgeous - even in mid September
Sep 2019
There are two places to park. One parking lot holds about 8 - 10 cars and is on the same level as the garden. The other lot is lower and on the level with the highway. From the lower lot there are some steep looking stairs. We opted for the easier choice. There is no charge for admission, but a $5 donation is requested. It is well worth it.

Large, well-tended flower beds were in full bloom when we visited in mid-September. It was very colorful.

A Fantastic Find

For those of you who love gardens, this is the place to go. Perennials that attract butterflies, beautiful sitting areas to pause and reflect allow for an enjoyable and relaxing visit. There is no charge but a $5 donation is requested.

Terrace hike is lovely
Aug 2019
The terrace hike up from the Route 3 parking lot is gorgeous and worth the effort, as the pay-off is the cozy Thuya lodge and the lovely gardens.

Worth the walk
Aug 2019
A wonderful walk up a stone path with views over the harbor brings you to a small cottage, well worth visiting, before you get to the garden itself. it was in full bloom in early August and absolutely beautiful.

Wonderful hike to an outstanding garden!
Jul 2019
You don't have to hike up there but you really should if you are able. If you don't you will miss the harbor views which are terrific. You can drive up there. The garden was in full bloom and is superbly maintained. I can't recommend it enough, go , go, go and enjoy.
PS the house is interesting and worth a quick look, but it's dark and kinda gloomy. But the garden is beautiful!.
