Paul is a dependable, knowledgeable and personable guide who did a great job guiding me up and down Mt. Katahdin via the Saddle Trail. The views from the top were spectacular! Paul worked hard to make sure the trip went smoothly, and provided very helpful advice about hiking and backpacking.

Thanks for the kind words! It's always a pleasure to lead visitors to the top of Maine's tallest, and greatest mountain, Katahdin. Come back and visit Katahdin Country when you can. There's so much more to see and do! Best regards, Ranger Paul

I was disappointed with several parts of this 7 day 6 night canoe trip and feel I need to let others know. The trip was from Chamberlain Bridge to Town of Allagash.
At the start, things seemed to go well. Paul was personable, had knowledge of the area and had interesting stories to tell. He taught us several skills that I didn't know and was willing to share them. The food on the first few days was good and plentiful. I was expecting more of a lunch variety as we had the same thing daily. Snacks were plentiful, nuts and energy bars. Near the end though, we had fewer supplies, eating the same supper and breakfast on the last two days.
I felt that two miscalculations in direction that caused us to retrace paddle and add precious time to our day was an error. I did not expect that from a hired guide. Revealing that he had not been on the Allagash for at least two years as we drove back to Millinocket may have been a contributing factor. This fact I wished I had known earlier.
I wished Paul had been prompt in starting our day. It took 3+ hours from wake up to paddling, we were waiting for Paul to get our day started. The last item is that I do not recommend an odd number of paddlers. Paul invited a friend to join our group which required Paul to paddle solo, causing us to lose precious time. Long days gave us less downtime each afternoon.
I'm glad I was able to do this trip, I hope others that hire Paul ask detailed questions so they are clear as to what they are receiving in services.

We happened upon Paul's guide service wholly by accident (he was arriving with his truck at a local café just as we stepped out of our vehicle to ask directions) . . . engaging a guide during our stay at Baxter State Park wasn't even on our radar. But, after being told that we couldn't drive our dually truck into the State Park (too wide), we needed to explore our options for exploring the park. It turned out to be a fortuitous piece of "bad luck." Paul led us to hidden gems in and around BSP that we never would have found on our own! One highlight was a visit to a quiet, secluded, boulder-strewn, crystal clear lake with Mt. Katahdin in the background. A postcard-perfect scene. Another was spotting a mama moose and her calf across a lake. Paul knew just where the chances would be good for spotting such an iconic northern Maine scene.
The next day, we took a kayak/canoe trip with him and another small group. He led us to a great little historic building on the shore of the lake which used as a logging camp since the early 1800's What most impressed us on this trip was his flexibility and commitment to the group's safe, pleasant experience. The weather became a little dicey (wind-blown small waves). He continually altered the route we would take, based on wind conditions, and made frequent stops so that the group could rest, snack, and re-gain our strength. It was very clear that our safety, comfort, and psychological peace of mind were the priorities to him.
This was our first trip to the Maine north woods, and Paul's guide service truly enhanced our experience. In fact, I would not hesitate to say that he whetted a desire in us to return to this area and explore more. We would definitely seek him out - his knowledge of the area, his generosity of spirit, and his humor (not to mention his reasonable prices) make it a no-brainer!

My parents and I booked a 1/2 day tour with Paul to try and find some moose. We started out on a cold, early morning to go into Baxter State Park and then toured around the southern end of the Maine Northern Woods. Though we didn't find a moose, we had spectacular views of fall in Maine. Paul was extremely knowledgable of the area and though we didn't see a moose, we had a great time!

Booked a half day with Paul to see if we could find some Moose to photograph. Paul had us up early and on the way before sunrise in a effort to catch a moose sighting just after sunrise. We went to Baxter State Park and he took us on a short hike to a backwoods lake. Beautiful sunrise, lake, and view of snow covered Mt. Katahdin on a cold crisp morning. After that we traveled farther into the North Woods. Sadly the hunting season and fewer numbers of moose did not play in our favor but we saw some of the most beautiful scenery and captured some gallery quality photos. We also learned a lot about Northern Maine and the area around Baxter State Park. Great day and highly recommend Moose Woods Guide Service and Paul.

After wanting to experience the Allagash Wilderness Waterway for a number of years I finally decided to hire a guide to make this dream trip a reality. Paul was highly recommended and an excellent choice. His professionalism and know how to safely guide our group through the AWW made for an amazing experience. The four day Allagash trip included 45 miles of paddling through some of the most beautiful and peaceful scenery yet also included a lively splash of fun running some rapids along the way. Paul took the time to teach me to read the water which made the trip a great learning experience. He was mindful of everyone’s needs and set up an organized camp that included great meals in some beautiful locations. I would recommend anyone looking for an unforgettable Maine experience to contact Paul Sannicandro of Moose Woods Guide Service to take care of all the details for your next adventure.

We had a great time out looking for moose w/Paul. Not only did we see moose we also saw beaver, fox, bald eagles w/a nest, a loon on a nest and some fabulous scenery. We also learned a lot about the area. Thanks Paul!

Thank you! It was great to meet you and Bryan and to have the opportunity to show you folks around Baxter State Park and the West Branch of the Penobscot River. I learned some new bird songs from you, also! Let me know when you plan your next visit up this way, and I'll be happy to assist you in any way that I can. Paul's knowledge of the Katahdin Region is outstanding. He's a great guide, storyteller, and teacher. There's really no better person to show you all the great things this area has to offer. The night we spent hiking into a remote Baxter State Pond to paddle around and fly fish for brook trout is something I'll never forget.

Over the past seventeen years I have been on numerous outdoor adventures with Paul Sannicandro. These travels have included a ten day canoe/camping expedition on the St. John River, overnight paddles on the Seboeis River, backpacking in Baxter State Park, day hikes up Mt. Katahdin and back country fly fishing all around the North Maine Woods. Paul’s experience in the outdoors and both his knowledge and love of the Katahdin region and its recreational opportunities are second to none! The service, stories and experiences you will receive when taking a trip with Paul will be unforgettable for you and your family. I am always looking forward to my future adventures with Paul and I highly recommend Moose Woods Guide Service for any types of adventures in Maine’s Katahdin Region.

Paul is such a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the outdoors and the Katahdin Region. I was impressed to learn so much about topographic maps, and how to get oriented in the back country with just a map and compass. When the batteries in the GPS die, the ability to locate yourself on a map can become an actual lifesaver. I have learned back country skills from Paul that I will use for the rest of my life. If you are looking to spot wildlife, go fishing on remote ponds, or take hikes on any of the many wonderful peaks in Baxter State Park (there are so many besides Katahdin without the crowds), I would highly recommend Moose Woods Guide Service.
