About
Open from 15 July to 15 September. This church, Romanesque in origin, was built sometime before the 12thcentury. The rectangular layout has a nave, a semi-circular apse, a gable roof, a belfry and a later porch. The building is peculiar for the disproportion between the nave and the 17-metre high belfry. The top level of the belfry preserves one of the few examples of Romanesque sculpture in Andorra: heads carved in the centre of the double window arches. On show inside are reproductions of Romanesque mural paintings bythe master artist of Santa Coloma from the 12th century. The apse isdominated by a Christ Pantocrator surrounded by the tetramorph wherethe Archangel Michael, the church's patron saint, merges with the symbol of Saint Matthew. The original paintings are now held by the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC).

Thankfully, there are a number of them in Andorra. They all share the rustic stone exterior, but they also have their unique aspects. This church has a Lombard tower, like St Joan de Casselles and, I believe St. Esteve. As others have mentioned, you can also look down to the town in the valley below.

This spot is great for looking over Andorra. Also can get a great sunset that will go behind the mountains. I love how it will be still bright beside you there but down in Andorra it will be dark already. Also to see the city lights are very nice from here.

No two churches in Andorra are alike. The bell tower and the porch of Sant Miquel give it distinctive touches that set it apart.

If you have been for a walk in the beautiful Madriu-Peraftra valley, a visit to this church is a must. It is small but dates from the 12th century. It has a beautiful and very interesting fresco which is actually a reproduction as the original is now in a Spanish museum. It is interesting to see how far painting has evolved from these very early stages.
There is an English speaking guide who will give you information and is all for free.

This was a short post lunch stop on the three countries in one day tour. The church is fairly small with a tiled sloping roof, a porch opening onto a paved courtyard in front and a square tower at its back. It is located on by the road with the mountains in the background and a valley on the other side of the road.

It offers beautiful views over the valley below and is worth a short stop as part of the tour.

We passed this on our way to Andorra la Vella, but didn't get out. The whole area is amazing. But, our driver didn't stop to visit it.

This church was a nice little stop on our tour of Andorra. We couldn't go inside, but just being able to examine the exterior architecture was fascinating. I really appreciated seeing how the people of Andorra care enough about their history to make their infrastructure work around it - in the case of this church, the road literally runs right by the building. In many other places the church would likely have been demolished to make room for progress, but not here.

There is a fabulous view from the guard rail side of the road, too. The vista is best summed up by something my husband said as we took a rare selfie; 'it's not every day you get your picture taken with an entire country behind you!'

Note that this is not an attraction you should attempt to walk to. It's very far up the mountain via a narrow, mostly shoulder-less road. We were dropped off, but there wasn't really room for the vehicle to park.
