Jason Cross and Dan Flaminni from Smoking Rivers are the real deal Maine guides. We did the St Croix 4 day/3 night paddle. Ahead of booking, we had several conversations with Jason so we knew exactly what we needed to pack and he understood what our expectations were for the trip, namely to learn how to paddle a canoe competently. We had excellent instruction which gave us the tools we needed to handle ourselves on the river. Safety was paramount to our guides and we never felt in over our heads. We not only learned the necessary paddling skills, but also started to learn how to “read” a river. We even had two places where we scouted the upcoming rapids from shore. Our guides were also excellent chefs. They took good care of us vegetarians—breakfast, lunch and dinner. It was fun feeling part of a team collecting wood for cooking, and washing up dishes after meals. We don’t fish, but others in our group did plenty of casting and catching. For bird enthusiasts there were bald eagles, mergansers, king fishers and herons. We saw evidence of beavers and even heard one slapping its tail on the river in the night. If you’re looking for a true Maine canoe experience, talk to the folks at Smoking Rivers. We were lucky enough to experience a morning that gives the company its name; cold night temperatures and warm river water combined to form a smoky morning mist.

Trip of a lifetime! We took a canoe trip on the St. Croix with Dan from Smoking Rivers, it was absolutely amazing. Regardless your skill level, I would encourage anyone to book a trip with Smoking Rivers. Dan’s knowledge and skills on and off the water are absolutely mind blowing. He is particularly safety conscious, he knows the winds, water, rain and the land like the back of his hand. His master skills go beyond his perfect balance in a canoe, he can identify every animal, every flow of water, when the rain will arrive and he cooks gourmet camping meals with desserts. Who has Prime Rib, Green bean casserole and Brownies on a camping trip? We did! Dans cooking and skills were so impressive, another camper asked for his business card. You will not go hungry by any means. We had breakfast lunch, supper, appetizers and desserts every day. The fall foliage was absolutely stunning, the Eagles gave us a show, the fish were biting all hours of the day and evening. On the water during the day and all of us gathered around the campfire at night. Dan is the most knowledgeable, patient, organized, conscientious guide we have ever encountered, we are still in awe. The Smoking Rivers staff was so helpful from the very first phone call. We had some personal issues come up before our scheduled trip, they were so understanding and went above and beyond to accommodate us. A trip with Smoking Rivers is a trip for all ages and all levels of experience. Thanks for the lifetime of memories in four wonderful days Dan and Jason, we are grateful. I highly suggest a four day minimum trip or longer. I wish we had booked more than four days, but, there is always next year. Fondly, Tracy and Al St. Louis MO

My wife and I and two friends spent the first week of September paddling the St. Croix river with Jason Cross, a Master Maine Guide and founder of Smoking Rivers. This was our second multi-day trip with Jason and even better than the first. We’re lightly experienced canoeists in our late 50s. Jason gave super clear instructions on how to navigate the white water, found glorious camping spots, helped us see everything from beavers to moose to smallmouth bass. And every day he cooked the world’s heartiest meals over the camp fire. We’ve known a half a dozen Maine guides and Jason is one of the most thoughtful, organized and at the same time, easygoing and fun. If you’ve ever wanted to try a guided canoe and camping trip, we can recommend Jason and Smoking Rivers very, very highly.
