We booked the one hour tour of the vineyard and cellars and tasting session.
Darcy was a fabulous hostess, very informative and answered our many questions.
Fabulous to see the passion and history behind the wine making at this beautiful château.
We bought a few bottles of wine to take home and are looking forward to sampling them again.
Thank you 😊

This was a highlight of our 17-day trip to France. Our tour of the organic vineyard and the cellar process was brilliantly conducted by Mariella, who is currently doing an internship with them. She was incredibly informative and spent a generous amount of time with us. She then led us to the chateau for a tasting of several estate wines accompanied by delicious local pate, cheese, and bread. The wines were superb, particularly their 2011 cabernet franc, and we bought as many bottles as we’re allowed to bring back on the flight home. We also met and chatted with owners Sebastian and Darcy; Sebastian’s family has owned the beautiful chateau for 400 years. Between the glorious setting, the warmth and guidance of our hosts, and the quality of what they produce, this is a must visit.

A short drive from the town of Chinon, we parked at the top of the drive next to the Chateau where were met by a female guide and then a very friendly looking bearded chap who introduced himself as George. He introduced himself as the Owner and gave a brief history of the Chateau and a direct descendant from the original owner. We were passed to our guide for a walk through the Vineyard and the Wine Cave. Then back to , a large room in the yard for wine tasting held by George. The wines we tasted were very good , the talk was both informative and humorous with no pressure to buy whatsoever.
My daughter, knowing our visit was on our 50th Wedding Anniversary booked a picnic for us, the Owners wife met us, and as she led us to a sheltered area in the grounds of the Chateau she mentioned our Anniversary etc a nice touch for her to have engaged in conversation so warmly with us. Near the vineyard she asked us to lead on through a gap in the hedge where we found we had a beautiful picnic laid out on a table in the centre of a secluded area. The food was of a high quality, as was the wine, the dessert was fantastic local specialty. So we were met by the Count, had wine tasting with the Count and taken to our picnic by a Countess. Unforgettable day, very highly recommended.

We travelled a long way to visit this wine farm due to all the great reviews. Getting there we were informed that we can’t do a tasting as a tour is about to start, but we can come back in an hour for the tasting. Disheartened but still eager we went to a small cafe (with 2 difficult toddlers in tow) to wait an hour. We returned after an hour only to be informed that now they are closing. A lot of effort on our side for nothing. I little bit of consideration from their side would have gone a long way.

As both a travel agent, and the manager/owner of our family owned Chateau in the Loire, I regularly reserve lunch at Petit Thouars for clients of ours, interested in wine and the area (and cabernet franc grapes) of Chinon. They not only are never disappointed, but come back raving about the warm and authentic welcome, the elegantly served picnic and the great wines. It's a winner every time, but not always easy to get a booking, as in high demand.

We arrived 20 mins early after travelling for hours to get here. We were received with a rude welcome of "who are you" then "you are early." We were told to walk over to the blue door and have lunch first. We went inside and saw a table set up. We sat down in a dirty smelly room with mould on the windows and ceiling. Food was brought in plastic containers and with plastic wrap attached. We served ourselves. I went to use the toilet to find dirt all on the toilet and the door would not shut. We felt dirty.
We decided to leave and knocked on the door of the castle and stood in the rain while the owner sheltered inside explaining that we were very disappointed and felt this was not worth the $100 EUR we had paid.

The castle is in terrible disrepair and the owners have no idea about hospitality, how to serve guests. They should not be receiving guests they are not ready!! Not worth the money charged.

Dear Kim and Rob, Your review doesn't not include the entire story, which we feel needs to be mentioned. You tried to cancel your Viator reservation under the 24-hour notice period and you were denied a refund due to the terms of Viator. When you arrived twenty minutes early on the day of your picnic (during our own lunch break) you were immediately accommodated, though it was obvious from the very beginning, from your manner of speaking and the significant looks to each other, that you were not disposed to enjoy your experience. Due to the pouring rain, you were seated at one of our in-door rooms (a room that does not have mould on the windows or ceiling but is a limestone room, so has the normal imperfections that you find with limestone, the stone used to build castles in the Loire Valley) and served our picnic lunch, made of select artisanal products of excellent quality, and of which you partook of everything. You even left with the desserts. We were very surprised when twenty minutes later you knocked at our door announcing your intention to leave and we were shocked at your words, behaviour, and your intention to not to take the tour or have the wine tasting. Since you took off it was impossible to have a dialogue with you, and therefore your review of our Picnic in the Vines tour does not reflect the entirely of the experience since you did not stay for the tour of the vines and cellar and the wine tasting. Regarding our picnics: our picnics are prepared using fresh and high-quality ingredients. They are packaged in containers that accommodate a picnic meal. The picnic does not include table service (ie. you serve yourself). Your pictures show the table as you have re-arranged it: not with the care that we set for you. Regarding the state of the château and the toilets: On the June 4th, 2022 we were hit with a massive hail storm that decimated 50% of our harvest, damaged several facades of the château, our tiled windows and 60% of our roof. Because we are a Historical Monument a full dossier was required to initiate the process of receiving a building construction permit in order to start the repair work to fix damages. We are still in the middle of this process and hope to be able to start re-construction on the affected areas soon. The wall behind the toilets was also affected and, unfortunately, between the time when I checked the toilets, some limestone must have fallen on the top of the toilet. We are very sorry that you found the toilet with limestone on it, yet had you approached us, we would have cleaned and rectified the situation immediately. We remain 100% committed to providing a uniquely informative, interesting and delicious experience in the Loire Valley. We wish you the best. Yours sincerely, Sébastien and D’Arcy du Petit Thouars

Our last day in the Loire was spent with Sebastian at his lovely home. Steeped in history and full of charm, Sebastian explained how this beautiful Chateau came to be with its interesting connections through time.

The tour of the vinyard with Mary was excellent. She is very knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our questions.

Wine tasting brought us back to Sebastian who then added to the information provided by Mary on the Vineyard tour.

The picnic was fantastic and their lovely dog - as expected, kept us company.

This is a genuine and authentic Loire experience and will be one to treasure.

Thankyou for making our last day here so memorable.

Highly recomended. You'll not be disappointed.

Where to begin! This was a perfect day, with a superb tour around the vineyard and then tasting in the expert hands of Sebastian (and Biscuit the cat!). Followed by a fantastic picnic in the stunning grounds of the Chateau. This is a family run business and we very much enjoyed the personal feel of the whole experience. The fact that the wines were also so good was an added bonus. This is an experience to savour and enjoy in beautiful surroundings - educational, interesting, delicious and above all fun!

My wife and I chose to do the Picnic in the Vines tour. Unfortunately, the weather in mid-May wasn't cooperating but it didn't dampen our time at the chateau. D'Arcy greeted us when we arrived and gave us a nice tour of the grounds, cellar, and winery, all the while giving us some background about their family, before heading back to the main building for our wine tasting. Their cute little dog, Dmitri, joined us for most of the tour. He followed us around the property and sat outside when we went in the cellar where he knew he wasn't allowed.

Since the weather wasn't exactly picnic-friendly, we had lunch in one of the small buildings near the chateau. Dmitri decided to keep us company while we ate. The food was locally sourced and it was all fantastic! We really enjoyed it! The wine was great and we ended up buying a bottle of Cuvée Amiral (which made it back to Canada with us) along with a bottle of Les Georges (which we enthusiastically drank in Paris).

Sébastian came to see us out at the end of our meal and it was great chatting with him. He was friendly, and funny, and really excited to hear that we had a good time! He and D'Arcy are great hosts and really made us feel welcome!
