    Not so great…
It was a nice day but took about 1/3 of our time for turning around and /or changing the engine. It’s a great experience for little kids but pretty boring for adults. Seeing the backside of town and woods on the other was not fun. They tell you about seeing. Ellsworth Falls and it was disappointing that it just was very small. As adults I would have kept my money if I’d read any reviews on it.

    Not great.
Sorry to say was a bit of a disappointment. As others have said more time was spent turning the train around (couldn’t this have been done before we boarded?) and switching the engine front to back. No views to speak of. The wooded area seemed to have homeless camps. The town was the back yards of homes. The much mentioned Ellsworth Falls was nearly non existent. Between all that and the complete stops we rolled to at some intersections; it was like we never really got started or had any momentum. That said - 5 stars to the crew who volunteer their time and energy to keep this going. They were the real hero’s of the trip.

We did the pumpkin train ride and had a good time! My LO is 3 and it was the perfect amount of time. By the time he wanted to get up it was time to get off and pick a pumpkin. He loved the stickers they gave to decorate his pumpkin too.

When we go on vacation we usually start with a train/trolley/bus tour to learn more about the area before we explore too much. The volunteer staff was fantastic and were very accommodating to questions and were quick to point out things of interest. Conductor Gary was a fantastic resource for knowledge about the rails and was quick to recommend other destinations and restaurants. If you’re looking to get to know more about the area, I suggest taking a ride!

Not at all worth our time and money. We sat still more than anything and your staff got way too close for comfort during a pandemic. I feel silly We wasted our money when it was a better view driving on the road we saw from the train.

Great experience. The train had two different types of turning the train around. Could sit outside without a mask and fresh air, or go inside. I love trains but not as much as the all-volunteers who made the trip enjoyable.

We were looking for something to do with our 8 month old for the day after we visited acadia national park and figured we would try the train. As fall is approaching I saw scenic in the name I thought this was perfect but I found the scenic part very lacking. The whole ride is right next to the road and you're not really seeing anything new if that's the road you drove in on. You do go over a bridge and there's a pretty water feature but nothing spectacular. You drive through some wetlands and there are powerlines with osprey and eagle nests but we didn't see anything. We never saw any wildlife of any kind.
Generally we weren't impressed and expected more. Our little one got pretty fussy as there was nothing happening. However, if you're a train enthusiast, there's interesting history on the engines and the passenger cars.

This gave us something to do on our vacation, but was not worth it. When we read the description before booking, it seemed like the ride would be mostly through the woods with opportunities to see wildlife. In the almost 2 hour trip, the first half hour was turning the train around. We then went along Main St, so saw the back sides of all the buildings we drove past to get there, with some woods on looking out the opposite windows. We briefly went through the wetlands with woods on both sides of the train. We then were changing direction again with the engine moving to the back of the train. This again took quite a bit of time. The engine pushed us backwards for a bit then we went forward again. If you didn't change sides of the train, which we didn't, you saw the same thing on the way back to the station as you saw on the way there.
This would only be interesting for those who like to learn about the workings of the trains. If you are looking for a "scenic" train ride, this is not the one to go on.

We enjoyed the ride. The only issue for me was that on a ride meant for children (it went to a pumpkin patch), no one was wearing masks and there seemed to be no expectation that they should be wearing masks. Children under 12 are still unvaccinated and Hancock County is in the red currently for cases I believe. I was under the impression (and wrong I suppose) that all transit was meant to require masks. Hopefully this won’t be an issue when the season starts up again in the spring.

All volunteer staff, very friendly and knowledgeable. They engaged my kids in conversation and learning about the train along the hour and 15 min trip. My 3 year old talked about the train ride all day long.
Perfect price for a family!

This is a pleasant steam train ride out of Ellsworth, ME. Reasonable rates. Volunteer staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Our family has taken this trip twice on visits to Maine. Would go again 😊
Shout out to Conductor Gary who cheerfully interacts with kids and all guests!

My husband & I spent a very pleasant afternoon here. First the president himself showed us around, giving us a tour of the different trains they are currently restoring. Then we rode the wonderful train. It's true it isn't very scenic but we enjoyed the ride very much. It's also true that part of the 1 hour 45 minute ride & turning the train around, that's part of the experience. You can pack a picnic lunch which is what we did & ate on the train. The open air train has picnic tables but I can't sit on one with a bad back so we rode in the passenger train. Everybody is very nice & knowledgeable & they go out of their way to explain things to kids. If I lived locally I definitely would go in the fall, I bet then it 's very scenic with the colorful leaves but if you are just visiting like we were just GO!

It was a pleasure to talk to the volunteers who run the train and to experience an old-fashioned train ride. The track changes and watching the engine turn-around are part of the experience. The countryside scenery is pretty but it is true that part of the ride goes through the town of Ellsworth. Still we enjoyed seeing the town from this perspective. If you like trains or if you seldom have the opportunity to ride a train this is a great activity. We all enjoyed it!
