- Lorna C3 contributionsFrom start to finish on the Santa experience it was fantastic All the staff were really kind and helpful The buffet cart served fab bacon and sausage buns at a really good price What can I say about the on board experience the elves entertainment had me laughing throughout the journey credit to them they certainly had lots of energy running and dancing up and down the carriages Only thing that maybe could improve it would be perhaps get the kids doing an activity such as colouring a Christmas picture as before the train departs the kids don't have anything to do I know this is extra cost maybe just increase the price slightly to cover this . In all a fantastic experience if you haven't been get bookedVisited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 7, 2024
- helen s2 contributionsHalloween ghost train was an amazing experience for all our party. We ended up doing 2 trips on the train as kids aged 11 down to 3 thoroughly enjoyed the ‘chain man’ jumping at them. Big thanks to all the volunteers and especially the ‘ chain man’ xThank you so much for your kindness, I am so happy you enjoyed yourselves and thank you for the mention…I was the demonic monk scaring people or my new name ‘the chain man’ I kinda like that haha We hope to change the theme next year so hope you can join us again and hopefully for some other of our events aswell. - Angie WKent, United Kingdom42 contributionsWhat a quaint little station. Only a short ride, less than 30 minutes return, but volunteers were great, buffet car at station for food and drink, not too expensive either. There's a little museum and a gift shop at the station and engine sheds if you were interested, sadly it rained quite hard so we decided not to venture out to the sheds.Thank you for your review, hopefully you’ll be able to pay us another visit when the weather is fine and we will be very happy to give you a tour of our engine shed. We are hopeful of the first stages of our extension opening in the close future so hopefully will give a slightly longer journey time. best wishes, Marc- LWR Public RelationsWritten November 24, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 20, 2024
- Trevor B1 contributionI was given tokens for the railway for my birthday last year. Having waited for better weather and the summer holidays, we decided to visit and take our grandson. I had 2 x £20 vouchers. I asked for 2 adults and one child day tickets, costing £26. This is where the confusion came. The only way I could pay was to use one voucher plus £6 cash. My other voucher was returned to me with a hand written message on the back - "this was not used - 21/8/2024" and 2 lines drawn across the front of it! Despite asking why could I not use both vouchers and have one changed to £16 for use elsewhere on the railway, it was not possible! I had expected to use both vouchers (£40) during the visit but left with one unused £20 voucher still in my pocket. The railway is a super idea, and the possibility of future development for the return of a line all the way through to Louth is quite exciting. The train does look very tired inside in some of the carriages, and it is certainly a "better journey" should you arrive early to get the best choice of carriage/seating. I do wonder if people lucky enough to get these carriages, actually spend the whole day occupying these seats whilst simply going forwards and backwards without ever leaving the train?Hello Trevor, I have read your review and firstly would love for you to make contact with me so I can find out further information concerning the vouchers and then I have a better understanding of what happened, in which then I can speak with the management team afterwards. Please email me: marclwr@hotmail.com Following on to your question about our visitors and the carriages…..the carriages are very old as you can imagine and our volunteers work hard trying to maintain them but it is a massive challenge keeping all parts of the railway maintained with a so small team of workers but our volunteers work so hard that rest assured areas which need a little TLC will get sorted asap. In regards to visitors and their seating options… tickets allow all day travel up and down as much as you want, we do get some people staying on and riding again, others will vacate and have refreshments or perhaps a walk around the station before riding again later on in the day. It is entirely visitors choice where they sit and all seats are on a first come first serve basis, of course however our volunteers are on hand to help with any issues on the day so if mentioned to the volunteers, we of course would do everything possible to get you a seat in your chosen area. Hope this helps answer your concerns and look forward to hearing from you. Santa gave gifts and left elf Mark and elf in training to do the entertaining. Singing and running up and down the train had everyone laughing clapping and dancing. Definitely worth the visit and lovely cafe to visit afterwards.Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 7, 2024
- flashman232Birmingham, United Kingdom264 contributionsVisited during May half term 2024 - check the website for ‘running days’ as it isn’t open/running everyday as it’s all done by volunteers. It is only a short 2 stop journey. Starts at Ludborough and goes to North Shoresby or vice versa - about 15 mins each way. We got off at N/Shoresby and went for a drink at the New Inn for an hour and go back on the train. Nice on steam train, kids/adults can stand and have a picture in the cab, staff are all friendly etc. Will be nice when it travels to Louth as well - not sure when that will happen. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your visit and we can’t wait to get our extension finished. Hopefully you can visit us again in the future to see its progress. - sb90may23 contributionsAbsolutely amazing. This was our second visit and this time was for the Santa train ride. It was incredible, our little girl got a lovely present from Santa, a great train ride and on board entertainment from the elves on board who made it so very special with songs and dancing and then a visit to Santa's Grotto at the end which was a great photo opportunity. Its crazy how all the staff are volunteers yet they are absolutely amazing compared to some places you go where the staff are actually getting paid and are horrible and rude! Such an amazing day! Well worth the money and will definitely return! Can't recommend highly!Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 8, 2024
- Peter DUnited Kingdom3 contributionsI have visited this railway many times and each visit just gets better. This time I noticed that the carriages forming the Steaming Kettle buffet have been replaced with newer stock. It was so nice sitting in a first class ex-GWR coach with our food and drinks. The service was excellent on board with a lovely view of the countryside and station. The ride to North Thoresby was complemented by a.volunteer giving on board commentary about the history of the railway. Once back at Ludborough I was given the chance to have an escorted visit to the yard and shed. Before leaving, we had to have another round trip on the train too. I intend to join the supporting society to keep up with progress as they head towards Louth. I will definitely be back again. Well done to all the volunteers for making it such an enjoyable visit.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 22, 2024
- Validreview75 contributionsGreat railway with helpful and friendly volunteers. Nothing seemed too much trouble to ensure folk were happy and safe. The cafe sold bacon butties to die for... so to speak. I counted 3 pieces of lean bacon in mine. Fair and reasonable prices too. Would I go back? Oh! Yes! Pack up your troubles and put them on a bus whilst you get on the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway.Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We all take pride in the work we do as volunteers and we are glad it is appreciated. Fantastic experience, would highly recommend, we visited today for a Birthday present for my Dad he also did the foot plate experience, all the staff are very polite and a commentary was also done on the train about the trains history by Marc which was presented very well and was very informative.
The admission prices was well worth the money you can ride the train all day long with added extras such as the shed engine tour.
All in all was a fantastic day with the family.

We popped into the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway for the first time, on route from Norfolk to the North Yorkshire Moors. No trains as such were running, but the resident diesel shunter was in operation, offering driver experiences. My husband had a go at driving (he saw the shunter when it was still in BR service as Lincoln Central station pilot, way back in 1986) & loved it! All the staff were friendly & we would thoroughly recommend a visit, if you are in the area. We will definitely return next year & look forward to the future expansion of this line.

A wonderful railway is well worth a visit. This is a family-friendly place and disable, friendly to. The Railway runs between Ludborough and North Thoresby in Lincolnshire and is extending its tracks South to Pear Tree Lane. The railway has fantastic views of the Lincolnshire Country side, ludborough Station has a mk3 buffet car serving meals....cold/warms snacks... drinks and cakes. The cakes are very delicious to try, and the tea is wonderful.
You can visit the engine shed and see locomotives being refurbished and there is also a museum and gift shop too. There is also a second-hand book shop, Hagglers halt, which is also worthy of a visit. There is a car park by Ludborough Station, but there is no car park at North Thoresby.
Once you buy a ticket you can ride the trains all day long.

A great friendly railway and the only preserved standard gauge railway in the area. They have plans to expand at both ends of their current line. Most of the action is at Ludborough where there are shops, a museum and a great cafe in a first class carriage. At North Thoresby, the current end of line there is a great pub, and a waiting room with books to read while you pass away the time waiting for a train. On the day we went which was a Wednesday they were running a hourly service

We absolutely loved this!! Wish is was nearer to home. Great to support something run by many happy, friendly, cheery staff/volunteers. All of whom have knowledge of the rail line.
We arrived early at the free car park over the road from the station, drawn into the steaming kettle by the smell of bacon cooking.
Children thought the cafe was a great idea to recycle train carriages.
The actual train ride was more than we expected, choose where you sit, have a short time to wonder the next station and return back. Lots of reminiscing happened.
We had a look round the model railway, had a go on the tombola and look round lots of cheap treasures to buy.
If ever in the area we would definitely have another visit and recommend to others.

Had a lovely time with my children today on the Santa Special. All 6 of my children have special needs but the staff entertained them wonderfully. Everyone was very helpful, polite, and welcoming.
A huge thank you to Elf Mark who never stopped for a minute. He got the whole train singing, clapping and dancing in their seats.
The present from father Xmas was good value and the bacon butty we had in the buffet car was very welcome first thing in the morning.
Thank you for doing such a great job.

I visited with my family and young children we come here often and we actually enjoy this place. It is so enjoyable. The trains are brilliant and the food that they serve is also very good quality and it is just genuinely a really good day out.
However, the last few times we have been a gentleman who says he works there for the lwr goes around a lot with a camera filming for his YouTube channel, I find this a little strange because he always appears to be in your face and asking for money.
Today was no exception. He basically told me in the car park that he wants to get 5 million raised for the lwr. I don't mind this, however I don't think putting money into someone's bucket which clearly isn't registered to the lwr or a charity as a whole should be acceptable.
He seems very desperate and honestly it put me and the children off visiting. He just didn't seem right and he acted very peculiar, I'm not sure if I should bring this to the attention of the management of the LWR.
This is the only downside I found with this place just recently as he has been there multiple times when we go.

Hello, thank you so much for your review and bringing this to our attention, we never like to hear that our guests are unhappy.
Please be assured that I have straight away contacted the management in regards to your complaint and I have forwarded on your concerns.
The management know who the individual is, however I can confirm that they were not aware he was collecting money or making people feel uncomfortable, the individual does not work at the railway, but has recently been helping organise car displays at the LWR, we are aware he films for his YouTube channel onsite but nothing further.
Management will be speaking with this individual to discuss that if he wants to volunteer or raise money for the LWR it needs to be done in the correct official manner with the correct customer service skills.
We are happy you normally enjoy your visits with us and please don’t let this experience put you off because we don’t want to lose our visiting guests.
We would love to welcome you back in the future and hope you feel comfortable to visiting us again,
Please also be assured that if while visiting us onsite and you come across the individual again in the same manner or you feel uncomfortable, please do not hesitate to speak to one of our friendly volunteers to make them aware of the situation, or you can ask for management Frank or Garth
Please be aware that our volunteers do wear uniform and display name badges or ID lanyards so are usually easy to identify.
If you would like to discuss this further or speak with me, you can contact me marclwr@hotmail.com

As a family we have visited the railway on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed. We visited over the bank holiday weekend, which was a Super Hero's event. There were lots of families enjoying the day with many children and adults dressed as Batman, Super girl etc.
One volunteer guard dressed as Superman, did a superb job of entertaining the children as the train travelled from Ludborough to North Thoresby and back.
On the platform at North Thoresby, Superman and another guard led dances on the platform and many of the children and adults joined in.
Parking is free and there are good toilet facilities on the station and while the cafe on the stationery buffet car was currently out of action, there was a kiosk selling hot and cold drinks, crisps and biscuits. Food could be eaten in the buffet car.
It is very much small scale but never the less, the volunteers make it a great experience and it is well worth a visit.

Thank you very much for the time to review us. We are so happy to hear you have visited on numerous occasions and enjoyed it. We love returning guests and so happy to be able to welcome them back. The Superhero day was new last year and seems to be enjoyed and it's great to see so many adults coming dressed up aswell, I really like to get everyone involved including the adults.
It was myself as the entertainer dressed up, I'm so relived to hear you enjoyed it and with numerous other support in feedback, it does really make it worthwhile. We are all volunteers and not professionals in any way so to get the glowing reviews we do, it really does make the time and effort worthwhile.

Visited today for their Greatest Showman event. Mark and Jack did an excellent job of entertaining us on the train with songs from the movie and getting everyone clapping and singing along. My daughter was convinced they must have trained for years to be able to walk up and down the train whilst it was moving! All the staff there were very friendly and chatty. We had a great time.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I am so happy you enjoyed our entertainment, it's not a easy task to entertain when we are just volunteers without any professional skills but we do our best !! Haha.
We put on the entertainment as a little extra for the children and adults and it's amazing to recieve such praise...it does make it all worthwhile.
I hope you will visit the railway again soon as we have lots of running dates and plenty more exciting events planned. I will pass on your comment to Jack aswell.

Hello, Marc here from the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway. We are a dog friendly attraction, you can bring dogs onboard in our 'dog friendly' carriages, we have an dog friendly area at the rear of the cafe. Dogs aren't allowed in our gift shop however, if you need anyone to look after your dog while you browse our shop then we are all here to help.
We supply fresh water and anything else you require, If I can help with anything further...do get in touch.

What’s the access for dogs like in the cage and museum?
Written April 21, 2019
Hello Adelle. Marc here....I'm guessing that's a spelling mistake and you mean shop and museum... unfortunately our shop and museum are the only 2 areas where dogs aren't permitted I'm afraid however we have plenty of Volunteers about who will happily look after your pet while you have a look inside and we have a handrail fencing next to the shop entrance where you can tie up your pet aswell and both options are safe enough so don't worry
Hope that helps. Best wishes. Marc.

Hello Jessica. I work at the railway and can assist you with your question. Firstly we have car parking available and it's not far from the train station. We have a disabled toilet available and both platforms have wheelchair access as they are ramped. We have a buffet car where you can get refreshments with wheelchair ramp at one end but you are able to take refreshments on board the train aswell.
We have a ramp and double doors which gives access on board the train so you can visit and stay in the wheelchair if necessary...ride and enjoy our railway without worry.
We have plenty of people with disabilities and wheelchairs visit us and our volunteers are always on hand to help with any access and help.
Please do come visit and we will look after you all and make sure you have a great visit with us.

Can you tell me when you hope to have a longer running track with your extension?
Written October 11, 2016
This is a question that is often asked, however over the past year the maintenance and improvement of the existing line has had to take priority.
Once this is completed we plan to start work on an extension to the line for another half a mile south to Pear Tree Lane, which is the next road crossing. There are two issues: cost of materials (which will be around £250,000); and manpower (the LWR is run entirely by a volunteer workforce).
This will be the first stage of our long-term objective of getting the railway back to Louth.
