My wife and I stopped here en route from San Sebastián to Santander. I was disappointed with it as it didn’t work well for English.

The signage and several A/V pieces are in Spanish and Basque. The museum provides small booklets in English (and French) but they generally match the signage or exhibits. The recordings for some the exhibits are available in English but you effectively need a room full of English speakers before you can access them. It never worked for us.

It’s probably a great museum if you speak Spanish or Basque. For us it was largely a waste of time.

Fascinating museum giving poignant insights into the bombing of Guernica, the Spanish Civil War and beyond. Interactive elements that really bring the tragedy to life.

Very friendly staff and a great transation guide to help with the visit as the main exhibition is only in Basque and Spanish.

If you don't understand Basque, you will definitely need the translation booklet which is given to you at Reception. The museum is free on Sunday, which is good to know and it was quiet when we visited mid morning.

The smaller reproduction of Picasso's work and the 3D display isn't worth a special visit. Better to go and see the real thing. And there's a lot of deep philosophy here about the meaning of peace and how to bring it about. (The Tools of peace are quite something, see below or on their website).

But if you didn't know the story of the bombing in 1937, this is certainly a good place to start. Being placed in a room exactly of the time and hearing the sirens and the sound of planes and fire which destroyed the lives of so many innocent people does affect you.

Meanwhile the town itself does not live in the past. There is a positive outlook and friendly people. Maybe they are indeed using the Tools for Peace. Number 3 spanner = seeing things from another's point of view, apparently....

Translation booklet is available if your Spanish is not stellar. The museum offers both the history of Gernika and thoughts about peace and reconciliation. The message is thoughtful and not preachy. It takes a little over an hour to see the three floors. The special Ron English exhibit of pop art - his take on Picasso's Guernica - will be there through October 2017. That exhibit was an added bonus.

Gernika seemed to be a lovely, small town. We wanted to visit the museum as the Picasso painting is so powerful (it's in Madrid). Well, what a wonderful hour or so we had in this small but excellent museum. Rather than focus on the history, destruction and military aspects of the bombing of this town, the museum focuses on peace - what it means and how we can try and achieve it.

It's neither simplistic nor overly sombre and it deals with the bombing in a sensitive and powerful way.

The staff were lovely and helpful. The information boards are in Spanish and Euskara (Basque) but there is a well-written, comprehensive English guide which is very easy to follow.

We took the local train from Bilbao which, despite the wet and cold weather, was an easy, pleasant journey with some great views.

Well worth a visit.

This museum in the middle of the historical basque city of Guernica it's a must to do experience for anyone that loves history. Well structured and organized , it represents a passioned plead against any war. We were brought to tears on the end of our visit.

We planned a quick stop in Gernika on our way to Bilbao, to pay respects. We didn't expect the extensive museum and commemorative experience. The Peace museum focusses on international events, violation of human rights etc etc- but there is a room set up to replicate the experience of getting ready to head off to market and being - well, bombed! The films and audio's are available in English.
In the adjoining buildings there is explanation about how the Basque nation worked and why Gernika was so important.
If in the North of Spain, and interested in Spanish history, this is a place you can't afford to miss

We took the train (every 30 minutes from itxuri station in bilbao's old town) and meandered for a pleasant 45 minutes through the countryside. The tourist office which is opposite the peace museum has exceptionally helpful staff as has the museum itself. We were given an English translation of all the item descriptions and the audiovisual presentations are given in the language of the visitor as the staff monitor their progress through the exhibits. Impressive.
The quality of the exhibits and presentations are very good and heartrending at times. Would that all politicians could visit before taking up office.

We visited the Gernika Peace Museum on the weekend of a festival to mark the 75th Anniversary of the events of 1937. The contrast between the music and dance of the talented Basque performers who had taken over the streets and the quiet reflection that I experienced inside this museum could not have been greater. The museum staff were excellent and loaned us a guide which enabled us to enjoy the museum. The items are described in Basque and Spanish but such was the power of the images on display we really did not to be told too much. There is one interactive area where you find yourself in a room and hear the bombs falling outside. You can only imagine how it felt to have the might of the German and Italian Air Forces unleashed upon you unexpectedly. Highly recommended and very easy and cheap to get to from Bilboa. The Gernika Bus departs from just outside the railway station in Bilbao.
