A copy of the very known painting
Oct 2020 • Friends
Mural del Gernika of Picasso is a very known painting, which was painted by the famous painter Pablo Picasso, when he knew the infamous bombing of this historical city in the Basque Country. It is a reproduction (the original one is in Princesa Sofia Museum, in Madrid) of the painting, which is located in the center of the town. The painting, the explanation and the meaning is obviously very interesting: a big criticism of war and the suffering of people. Bit, I think that this reroduction is located in a inadequate place, in a not known or beautiful square, I think that it would be better in other place.

The home of the masterpiece
Jan 2020 • Solo
If you are interested in either the Spanish civil war or art then you will want to see this. If you are not interested in either then maybe you need to think about why you are visiting Gernika?

The original of this masterpiece may be in Madrid, but there is something special about seeing it in the town it came from. There are a lot less people crowding around too.

obligatory stop when in Guernica
Oct 2019
It's an important part of town, visited by many tourists. It's close to other attractions, right next to the church and Casa de Juntas. All within a short walking distance from the bus station.

So, so

I’m not into abstract art so it is difficult for me not to be biased. Still, it is recognized by the number of tourists, locals and international that visit the place.

Worth a stop

If you have seen the real painting, this gives a good sense of Picasso’s masterpiece. Knowing the history of the town, one must see it.

It’s not far from the Casa de Juntos (Assembly House).

To make the most of a visit here learn the history of the city and the painting. Better to have a guide explain this to you

Underwhelming

It's a tile reproduction of the painting and so, in terms of quality, not very impressive. Still, worth a stroll by if you're in town. Across the street from the hospital, centrally located.

Why is this Strange Painting So Moving?
Apr 2019
The short answer, for me, is that the tragedy that occurred in this town, that is, the bombing of the entire town during the Spanish Civil War in 1937, and the world famous artist, Pablo Picasso, who chose to depict it in his huge painting shortly after, created a two fold attraction to the art work. The original is in the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, but if you visit the town of Guernica there is a replica on display. It is done in black, white and grey and is one of most powerful anti-war works of art in the world. Suffering victims, mostly women, children and animals are shown in the aftermath of the violence visited on them. It's late Cubism in style and it is Picasso's strongest political statement. War is cruel, fascism is cruel, the innocent suffer. These themes come out forcefully and you feel the power of history and art in this work.

Nice but nothing more

Ofcourse the painting is a masterpiece even it is a replica. Nothing more than the painting on stones. I missed some info/words on this place for this sad Spanish period.
