Five of us ages 10-74 took the Bioluminescence Kayak tour in July, an experience of a lifetime. This is a night paddle out into Penobscot Bay to see the bioluminescent organisms that swirl up as you paddle. The return trip by ten o'clock was under a blanket of stars such as I haven't seen in years. The group was led by two knowledgeable guides, each in a kayak, who traveled among the group of about a dozen people, two people to a kayak. Dockside instruction began the tour with padding refresher instruction in the water; life jackets provided, of course. I would recommend this for people who have been in canoes or kayaks before, not a newbie since it becomes dark on the water. The paddling was brisk and about two hours, but not too strenuous since the water was flat. A bonus is the little town of Castine; be sure to go early to visit this beautiful town of colonial and nineteenth century homes and the fort and lighthouse. Kayak Adventures offers day trips and beginner instruction too. All worth the cost.

Located in a quaint town in Maine is this little gem of an adventure. We took the biolumenescence tour at night in the Castine bay. The guide was excellent and allowed us to have an incredible time on the water. The pictures posted by people online don't do this justice. This is a must to see for yourself!

Our guide made us feel comfortable in the kayaks and made sure we are wll set prior to setting off on our adventure. She provided alot of local details and provided a plethora of information about what we were experiencing.

We would highly recommend anyone that enjoys the water and wants an ultimate experience to take the bioluminescence tour. Like fireflys dancing in the water and equally as memorable was the night sky of many star constellations, shooting stars and the milky way. Our guide and owner, Karen, pointed out many interesting objects and constellations in the night sky with her laser light beam as our six tandem kayaks rafted together. Her knowledge of the bioluminescence was captivating along with her many tips and stories shared of the area and her trips.

We also enjoyed a morning kayak with Jake from the same company paddling away with even more useful and interesting knowledge and kayaking skills from both adventures even though we own kayaks and kayak often.

Castine is a beautiful, small historic town-like stepping back in time 30 years.

Not worth the $$! Instructor was knowledgeable but basically glitter/fireflies in water, not the glowing experience we expected. We spent more time sitting still for science class than actually paddling, when she was talking we couldn’t hear her well, & then went 30 minutes longer. At the end we needed to help hose off the paddles & life jackets, that should be their responsibility with the amount we paid for this.

Already spent $90/person & pushed for tips on a trip we were not impressed with. We didn’t actually have cash & when told her so said she excepts Venmo! RUDE!

The bioluminescence was awesome! We saw it right away and for the entire tour. However, the tour itself was not great. It took 2 hours from the time the tour was suppose to start until we were in the water. True, we need instruction and to get outfitted, but I've been on many group kayaking tours before and it's never taken even half that time. We ended an hour past the time we were suppose to.

The bioluminescence trip was fantastic. Not only did we get expert kayak instruction and a firm "safety first" approach, we also learned about the science of both ocean and astronomy. Did I mention the magic of a beautifully clear evening and the powerful forces of the ocean's microscopic life? Highly recommended!

We took a large group of 7 adults + 3 kids (ages 11/8/8) on the night paddle. We were initially bummed out that our trip coincided with a full moon, but it ended up being really fortunate, as kayaking in the moonlight was awesome and we still had great dark areas to see the bioluminescent plankton. Karen the owner did our tour, and was really great to have. She was super patient with our kids, who have lots of questions, and like to shout out answers and random commentary. At the same time, she didn't try to 'dumb-down' the tour, so the adults got a great kayak, but also learned quite a few facts about the moon, the plankton and some astronomy with the 'floating planetarium'. Wasn't sure how things would work out given the long drive from where we were staying in Bar Harbor, but it ended up being a highlight of our vacation, so I'm really glad we decided to do it!

Due to a confluence of funny circumstances, I ended up on a solo kayaking adventure with guide, Chris. We kayaked all around the small islands for 2.5 hours. Just the best and most beautiful time. Perfect.

My group had debated all day whether to go kayak due to the weather. We decided to tough it out and so glad we did! After a little bit of rain during introductions, the water calmed down and we were able to have a wonderful calm kayak experience! Karen and Jon were wonderful. They provided plenty of tips and information about bioluminescence. I would highly recommend! I would suggest maybe some clear kayaks to make the experience even more memorable!

When in or near Castine, make sure to try Castine Kayak for an introductory paddle or a paddling adventure. Their certified Maine guides can show you the sights and keep you safe. We heard a lot of fascinating stories about local history and visited a shipwreck.
We went out multiple times, going in different directions depending on the tides. We saw seals, loons, osprey, and bald eagles, including one baby bald eagle on the nest. On a smaller scale, there are mussels, barnacles, seaweed, the occasional jellyfish, and sea urchins.
