Went to this museum as a fill in for the day. Wanted to kill some time while it warmed up for a beach walk. Spent most of the day wandering the modern art section and a very interesting photo display. Nice place, well lit well thought out. Very nice campus with several museums on it. Although I have been here before and enjoyed Bowdoins Museum of Art the exhibit on display this time was uninteresting to me. It was titled " It's a portrait because I say it is"...I'm sure there were people who enjoyed it but both my husband and I didn't. We went upstairs where the exhibits were more interesting and learned some... More

We waited until the weather was not very good and took a day off from the beaches to go to the Bowdoin museum, not expecting much since it is a little college. Surprise! From the gift shop to the modern architecture, and especially the quality of the art work....It was all wonderful. We saw a special exhibit titled Night as... More

Bowdoin College is known to be a particularly pretty New England campus, containing a fine educational institution. The fact that it contains an art museum was not in itself surprising to us. What was remarkable for us is the superior aesthetic and curatorial level of the museum and the high quality of its collection and exhibition. This lovely museum provides... More

Bowdoin has a first rate permanent collection of art and can always be counted on to have interesting special exhibits. It is open to the public free of charge.

If in the greater Portland Maine area the Bowdoin Art Museum is a terrific stop. Small but well endowed (and free of charge) call ahead to check if specfic shows augment the collection. We were also welcomed to lunched at the student cafeteria, a pleasant way to close the afternoon.

I came with a parent of a Bowdoin alumni and was ready to be polite. However, I was absolutely blown away by the size of the museum and quality of both the exhibits and permanent collection. The special exhibits were: the thought provoking 'This is a Portrait if I Say So', the fascinating R. Luke DuBois, and the sweet Barbara... More

It's always fun to check out the permanent and temporary exhibits. While here, be sure to visit other campus attractions.
