Excellent art museum

Bowdoin has a first rate permanent collection of art and can always be counted on to have interesting special exhibits. It is open to the public free of charge.

If in the greater Portland Maine area the Bowdoin Art Museum is a terrific stop. Small but well endowed (and free of charge) call ahead to check if specfic shows augment the collection. We were also welcomed to lunched at the student cafeteria, a pleasant way to close the afternoon.

I came with a parent of a Bowdoin alumni and was ready to be polite. However, I was absolutely blown away by the size of the museum and quality of both the exhibits and permanent collection. The special exhibits were: the thought provoking 'This is a Portrait if I Say So', the fascinating R. Luke DuBois, and the sweet Barbara... More

It's always fun to check out the permanent and temporary exhibits. While here, be sure to visit other campus attractions.

We got there between shows. Our friend, a physicist and artist said the museum was excellent but except for a few permanent collections there was little to see. Hope to go back.

Quite a lovely architecture. A few excellent classical sculptures. Some decent more modern paintings. A little small - easily done in an hour - but as part of a visit to Brunswick it's definitely worth fitting it in.

OK, that was a joke, because admission is free. I have visited a lot of art museums, and generally there is a theme. This museum looks like someone took every donated piece of art and threw a dart to see where it would hang. There is no cogent story, no theme, that lets you satisfy your curiosity about some aspect... More

Amazing gem in a college setting with significant historical importance. Just an unexpected experience that was most enjoyable.

One of my favorite places to take visitors. If you are lucky enough to be there for a tour, your enjoyment of the exhibit will be enhanced. Exhibits are well chosen. Employees are knowledgeable and happy to answer questions.
