It sounds like they’ve paused guided tours for now however we were happy to walk up around 10am and get right onto kayaks ourselves. The team did a good job setting up our kayaks and providing harbor directions and best practice tips. We were too weak to make it to the far island but had a great time paddling around in the harbor. These do have the foot petal steering with a rudder which I’m not used to but figured out pretty quickly.

For COVID, all staff wore masks and while they help us into the boats I felt safe the whole time. Coming early on a weekday it wasn’t busy so we didn’t feel crowded. More people showed up as we were returning so I recommend early morning if you can.

The harbor is busy so you need to be alert and in control of the kayak. We had no trouble getting around and would definitely return!

The staff and guides at Tidal Transit are just the best !!!!
We have done a number of trips with this group before and have always had a fantastic time.

This year we arranged for a camping trip on our own.
Tidal Transit provided the kayaks, camping equipment, charts directions, guidance and so forth so we felt comfortable going on our own to stay on one of the coastal islands.

It was amazing, spectacular views, an island to ourselves...best experience with the family ever.

Navigation was easy after guidance from the Tidal transit folks and with the charts they provided and GPS apps on the phone.

Price was very very reasonable and Tidal Transit set us up with everything we needed. Will definitely go again !!

Highly recommend this company and the folks that work there !!!

Our family of 5 were walking the waterfront and decided on a whim to check into renting kayaks. After a few minutes talking to the staff, we felt very comfortable with their operation and took out some kayaks for a short trip around the harbor. The staff was really friendly and attentive and I would highly recommend them to anyone in the area. We went out in 10 mph winds on a self-guided tour and didn’t have too much trouble navigating the waters in the harbor.

Fantastic kayaking from Boothbay Harbor to Burnt Island Lighthouse! Highly recommend renting kayaks from Tidal Transit and exploring the harbor and various islands. The staff was incredibly helpful and informative when providing instructions for where to paddle (we did a self-guided rental). We kayaked out to Burnt Island Lighthouse to have a picnic, and we stayed and explored the island for a bit. The fog was pretty heavy initially but it added to the allure. We saw several ospreys up close which was pretty intriguing and even some seals poking their heads up out of the water. Loved this activity...highly recommend! (and then stop for a beer at Footbridge Brewery after...steps away...and delicious beer!)

This was a great kayaking experience! There is a lot to see and many options of routes to take. You can go out towards some islands which is more of a distance or you can stick with the coves along the coastline. All of this is manageable in 2 hours, though you can rent the kayaks for longer. All of the scenery is beautiful. We saw two seals in the water with us and plenty of avian wildlife.

We kayaked on Memorial Day weekend and did not need a reservation, just went on the day of and there were plenty of kayaks!

The company workers and manager were amazing. They were very kind and explained everything in great detail. They were really helpful with making sure we felt comfortable and situated before sending us out. The pricing is really fair, and it even includes free dry bags.

Highly recommend!

I enjoyed my ride, but was pretty surprised how a novice could get into trouble fast. Tours are cancelled during covid, so folks sign the waivers and go off on your own. This is a working harbor with huge sight seeing boats, working boats, large pleasure craft and the wind can kick up the waves fast. Several islands dot the harbor but getting to them to take a look means crossing the boat lanes. You can play it safe and stay in the protected cove and hang around the pedestrian bridge, it is very pretty and will give some pleasure working your way around the rocks and supports. When guided tours are back, I would feel better about recommending anyone to rent a kayak.

The people at Tidal Transit were very friendly and knowledgeable in directing our group on where to kayak. Small, brief kayaking 'lesson' although our group were not novices. Not sure if they provide more instruction for beginners, you might need to ask for more detail if you are. Kayaks & paddles were decent quality. The loop out to the Burnt Island lighthouse was an easy paddle-- out against the wind/tide going out and with the wind/tide coming back. You might want to call ahead to ask about tide/wind for your rental day so you know what to expect. Overall, really a quality operation. We all bought cute Tidal Transit hats & T-shirts!

Amazing time! We were camping in Maine and were looking for a kayak rental company somewhere nearby. This place was an hour and a half from our camp site but so worth it! The equipment is in great condition, and the location of the shop is perfect. My partner and I rented a tandem kayak and did a short paddle out of the harbor to the Burnt Island lighthouse, had a picnic and made our way back. Saw seals in the water by the kayak, which was a great surprise! Love that the company gives you directions and advice on what to do nearby, and that you can do the trip on your own. We're both experienced kayakers so this short trip was just what we were looking for.

Also Boothbay is great, has amazing food options, gift shops and museums. We were there in August 2020 - didn't have high expectations, but were so happy to see so many businesses open. Can't wait to come back - currently planning our next trip out to Maine!

Stopped into Tidal Transit kayak and rented two singles for an afternoon paddle. Staff was very friendly and helpful, from start to finish. Provided a good overview of the harbor and suggestions on route. Will definitely go there again on our next visit!

Fun time kayaking in Boothbay Harbor. The people who work there are great. They tell you exactly where to go and give you a map. They give you instructions so even a novice can enjoy. Great way to view the harbor!
