Fascinating glimpse at Biddeford's history
Aug 2019
I had been wanting to take this tour for a long time. It is a fascinating look at how Biddeford entered the industrial revolution. The large pictoral kiosks in the entrance area are wonderful. They gave a good feel for how it was when alive with workers and machines. The vast empty spaces we toured were impressive. It is good to see so many new young businesses starting to take over the massive complex, giving the mills a second life. It is well worth the time and small tour fee they charge.

The personal insights from the tour guides, who are former employees of the mill, added so much to the experience.

The tour is conducted by former employees of the West Point Pepperell Textile Mills and traces the history of the mills from their construction in the 1800's to their closure in 2009. It offers a glimpse into the daily activities at the mill and the wide ethnic diversity of the the workforce. Our tour group was small which allowed great interaction with the tour guides and time for lots of questions and answers. This is an interesting behind the scenes look at the early mechanization of the textile business in the United States.

New England Water Power
Aug 2019
Reserve your place on the mill tour at least a day ahead of time and be prepared to arrive at the mills by 9:45 am. The tour will run until noon.
You can prepare for yur tour by going to their website and view the photos of the mills in their heyday.
The looms are long gone, but the buildings themselves attest to the enormity of the impact the mills had on the life of the Biddeford/Saco communities. The vastness of the empty halls that were once work and storage areas is impressive.
Your guides are volunteers with the Biddeford Mill Museum with abundant knowledge of the history of the mills and of intimate details about those who labored there.
Of all the areas you will visit, the subterranean tunnels were the most revealing. Today we read much about efforts to generate electricity from nature, be it wind, water or sun, but these tunnels were not dug to spin turbines to generate electricity. Waterpowere means just that...the water gushing through these tunnels turned wheels that were engineered to spin the looms with a complex series of belts, wheels and gears.

Enjoy yourself as you learn about life in the era of New England water power.

We toured the mill with a group from Kennebunk. Fascinating details of tghe construction and history of the mill and iys operation for over 150 years. The number of different ethnic groups that worked in the mill and the folks who helped in the building and operation of the mill and the foresight of those who designed and built the mill and the planning for almost all contingencies. A very worthwhile and enlightening two hours.

Like walking into a history book

Biddeford Mills Museum offers visitors a peak into the past, the present, and the future. The mills located at the heart of downtown Biddeford served as the economic engine for the city. Now the manufacturing operation has closed, but redevelopment is rampant. Tours of the mill space provide a historical overview of what once occurred in the mills dating back to its beginnings. Many tours are conducted by past workers who share personal stories that both warm the heart and bring a smile to your face. Perhaps the biggest highlight of the tour is the underground lagoon which once powered the entire area. If you are visiting Maine, this is a must see!
