About
Come join us for a 2.5+ hour, narrated, bus driven tour of Stephen King’s Derry, Maine. We will visit various locations where Stephen King has lived, worked, places that have inspired his stories, film locations, and we will discuss the many charitable contributions from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation to our fair city. Derry, Maine is a fictional town based on Stephen King’s long-time hometown of Bangor, Maine, and has been mentioned in various books and short stories, including IT, Insomnia, 11/22/63, and Bag of Bones. With the exception of a few name changes, the maps of Derry and Bangor are quite similar. With its landmarks, clear book and movie references, and accurate history, Derry is a place where King fans can come and see their favorite works comes to life.

I’ve been a Stephen King fan since I was a kid. A family member bought tickets for this tour because I had read somewhere that Stephen has iron gates around his home decorated with bats, spiders, and spider webs, and I had mentioned I’d like to see them. She figured this tour must take you past the house (it does). I didn’t know what to expect on this tour. I thought it might be creepy and weird, and though you stop in a local cemetery and visit other Derry (Bangor) landmarks, it never was. A lot of it is about Stephen and Tabitha, their philanthropy in Bangor, and the history of the city that influences Stephen’s writing. Jamie, the tour guide, was fun and entertaining, very knowledgeable. We had a great time, and the ticket was well worth the price. I highly recommend it to all Stephen King fans, and even those simply looking for a tour of Bangor, because you get to see the city and hear a bit about its history.

I was told about this tour from my hotel Charles Inn in Bangor. Outside of that I wouldn't have know about this tour.Jaime is the name of the man doing my tour. He is gregarious and very knowledge about the tour. He's been doing this for years. Sk stands for Stephen King. I was hooked on doing this tour from what the lady at my hotel told me.
I did the tour with a friend my friend isn't worldly like me and had misgiving about doing the tour. The tour is 3 hours long. And I learned a lot. I saw some Stephen King films and I really liked the tour. On the tour we stopped outside of Stephen King's house, We see were he shot some of his films like Pet Cemetery.
I enjoyed the tour even though I haven't seen a lot of Stephen King films so fans and super fans will enjoy this tour.My friend wound up liking the tour too. Jaime told us how much of a philanthropist Stephen King is he gave millions to Bangor parks, the Library in Bangor to fix the steps of the library they now has a cafe. I learned Stephen King owns a radio station in Bangor. And paid to have a huge swimming pool with slides installed in a Bangor park. And the pool is handicapped accessible.
I don't want to give it all way I want people to experience this tour and have some surprises like I did. All people at the end of the tour, get a postcard and a bumper sticker for their car. And a lot of people get a book from SK tours the book covering what was talked about during the tour. We have a meal break and we get to come out of car to take pictures..

We took the tour 10 years ago and went again a couple of days ago. Since Stu is in retirement his son Jamie, has taken over and gave my family a great tour. We chose to do a private tour and Jamie made it a great one. This is a must if you’re in the area and you’re a Constant Reader. We were given magnets, stickers and a great little guidebook with a retail price of about $12-$13. The only thing I would recommend is booking your tour as far in advance as possible because they are booked pretty solid, especially in the summer months.

This tour is great, especially for those that aren’t just a fan of King’s work, but his personal life as well. With a strong personal connection to the King family, the tour guides are able to give a personalized account of the various things in Bangor that inspired “uncle Steve” and how greatly they have helped Bangor, a city which they clearly care about. It was great to see the places that inspired some of my and my family’s favorite works, both book and film. Definitely recommend for anybody that have a love for the horror and love that is Stephen King!

We had so much fun seeing Bangor and learning about and seeing all of the places that influenced Stephen King as he wrote his stories. Jaime was a treasure trove of information not only about Mr. King and his books, but about Stephen's wife Tabitha, the King Foundation and the various landmarks and sites of Bangor. My family are great fans of Stephen King and the tour has prompted us to re-read his books. Our kids are 13, 11 and 9 and loved it. Word of caution: Make sure they use the toilet on the break mid-way through the tour and not drink too much afterwards. Our 9 year old really had to go by the end and there isn't another opportunity.

A great tour given by Jamie! I have been wanting to do a Derry trip for a while now, and he showed me everything I wanted to see and way more! It was great to see the real places behind the fictional locations, and the story behind the writer. My significant other knew basically nothing about King or his works, and said he had a lot of fun on Jamie’s tour and enjoyed all the interesting personal stories about the Kings. We look forward to coming back on this tour next time we are in Maine. We took the private tour (public tour was filled - trip was last minute), and one recommendation is to book in advance, especially if travelling in the summer. Well worth the money and time. Thank you for everything you do, Jamie!

We just took the tour last week and it was excellent. Our guide Jamie was knowledgeable not only about King, his family and his works but also the Bangor area. We booked a private tour for 5 plus our St Bernard and the tour was roomy and comfortable for all of us. We were thrilled to learn that our dog "Cujo" was the first Cujo EVER to take the tour! I am a self-proclaimed SK expert and I learned a few things. My wife and kids also had a great time. Its a great tour for fans of the books, movies OR both. I am also interested in the history of Betts Bookstore....and as a bonus...Jamie's father was the previous owner....so I got extra history there as well! I only wish I would have booked another tour for later that day JUST to ask additional questions and see additional sites. We will definitely be back to do another tour in the future. A MUST for Constant Readers!

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." I did not venture through the Cyclopean Mountains, and I didn't even cross a desert, but I did travel from Ft. Myers, Florida to Bangor, Maine for the Stephen King Tour led by the inimitable Jamie Tinker. His insights and inside jokes left me impressed by his depth of knowledge and ability to entertain while driving a full-size touring van. For a Constant Reader of 35 years, it was my pilgrimage to the Mecca of the King of Horror himself. It's fascinating to learn how Stephen King interwove his beloved hometown into so many of our favorite tales, and Jamie brings it all into perspective with four decades' anecdotes of firsthand collaborations between his family and the Kings. Big thanks to Jamie, and please keep the arc sodium lights burning!

We saw SK Tours of Maine on Facebook and being a Stephen King fan, I thought it would be fun. Neither my husband nor O have been to Bangor and were also looking forward to discovering somewhere new. We opted for the private tour which we enjoyed and we were even picked up and dropped off at our hotel. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about Stephen King, his family and the area. It was very apparent that he was passionate about his job. It was pricier than the regular group pricing but we could have had more friends with us to offset the cost but still feel it was worth it.

Stu was a very fun and knowledgeable tour guide! We came all the way from California for my King superfan husband's birthday and we were not disappointed. This was perfect not only to experience Stephen King's life and inspiration, but to be introduced to the city of Bangor. We loved it! Thank you!

Wow! So sorry we did not see this question a LONG time ago. Full refund (less processing fees paid at the time of booking) 48 hour in advance. Within 48 hours of tour there is no refund. Thank you for asking.

Hi there! Are any of your vehicles wheelchair accessible?
Written October 3, 2017
Hi,
I’m afraid we do not have a wheelchair accessible van at this time. We have had people take the tour and with a folding wheel chair we have put it in the back of the van and brought it out as needed.

Do you need to be a fan of Stephen King's books to enjoy this tour? I read a lot of his early works but I haven't been reading him for the last two decades. Has been has never read a Stephen King book! I just want to make sure he won't be bored out of his skull!
Written September 15, 2017
Since you have read some of Steve's books, i think going with me would be the best bet, and it should be interesting enough to keep your husband from being too bored.
Written September 15, 2017
No, Stephen King and his family is are able to live a normal life. People respect his privacy which is why he is able to leave his gate open. Stu advised if Stephen is home when a tour comes by he will come out to meet you. It so happens the day we went on the tour he was not home.
