About
OPEN FOR HISTORICAL HOME TOURS AND EVENT RENTALS. Ardoyne is a Victorian Gothic sugarcane plantation house situated along Little Bayou Black (Hwy 311) 5 miles north of Houma, Louisiana. Built in 1894, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as possibly the largest & most elaborate remaining example of rural Victorian Gothic architecture in the state. It offers visitors a unique, historical glimpse into the past as direct descendants of the original owner (state senator John Dalton Shaffer) still reside in the home. The house is filled with original furniture and antiques. Family has ties to Stephen Minor, George Washington, Nellie Custis, Robert E. Lee, as well as, Magnolia Plantation, Crescent Farm and Southdown Plantation all along Little Bayou Black.

Luckily it was just 2 of us plus the owner on a very personal and interesting tour through the history of a very nice building and its owners. Other than elsewhere the focus is here clearly on „family and furniture“ so you may want to combine Ardoyne with 1 or 2 others.
For us it was fun and very entertaining. Thanks for the personal tour and openness on life in such a gem.

There are so many unique and great things about this plantation. First of all it is Victorian Gothic structure, one of the most impressive you will ever see. Second the property is still owned by descendants of the original owners. So they have kept all the interior furnishings intact, and they have all the family history of the past, which they describe for you when you go on the tour. We loved it here.

We visited the Ardoyne in hopes of having our wedding there. It’s the perfect venue for our perfect day, and it has an interesting, diverse history...from major historical figures to quirky Hollywood stars, Ardoyne stands out not just in its story but in its architectural style as well. Her Victorian Gothic details range from haunting to mesmerizing. A true Southern Belle, holding her own with a unique beauty unmatched by any other, I can’t wait to say “I Do!” on those beautiful grounds!

The house was interesting and the guide was friendly. The tour was 40 minutes, maybe a bit less. No tour of the grounds, just the house. I thought it was good that much of the house was unrestored. It was not commercialized, which was also good. My impression of the tour was that it was like my neighbor showing me their house. It was nice, but I was not impressed. I just thought it was a bit pricey for what we got. This is not a museum, the tour guide lives there, so some of the house is off limits.

Thank you for your honest review as we welcome feedback from our visitors. We try to make everyone feel welcome at Ardoyne and we are happy that you felt like you were at your neighbors. The house does have a different feel at Christmastime since it is decorated for the holidays, and we have family home which is why one bedroom door may have been closed.
All visitors are welcome to stroll the grounds on their own and if asked, we will accompany you on your walk. Points of interest about the grounds are pointed out during the first part of the tour on the front porch. While the original workers cabins are no longer on the property, one can be seen a quarter mile from the house next to the original Ardoyne Plantation store (both are not owned by the family).
And yes, we are a private, for-profit museum; we just live in an area upstairs which is viewable on the tour. Ardoyne is unique in that nearly every artifact downstairs from artwork, to furniture, to china is/was owned by the family of the original builder. The family has ties to many historical and political figures, as well as, current artists, actresses and movies. We also try to provide a unique historical view of what the sugar industry was like in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s and how a large farm like this functioned after the Civil War.
Tours are given by the 6th generation of the Shaffer family. So yes, the tour is unique. There are no hired tour guides and no furniture “set decorations” bought from an auction like you may find at other commercialized plantation houses. We do charge less than those other plantations; plus funds collected from tours go back into restoration of Ardoyne Plantation house and her contents.
We thank you for your visit and your comments and would welcome you back on your next visit to Houma, Louisiana.

My family and I have always thought the home was beautiful when passing by while visiting Houma. We were so excited to see it open for tours. We were not disappointed. It was awesome that the house is still family owned, the tour is given by a family member that lives in the house and has tons of great inside facts about the area and the house which gives such a personal touch. Definitely stop by if you are in the area!

We traveled quite a bit out of our way to tour Ardoyne and we sure were glad we did so. Our tour guide actually lives in the home and is part of the family who has been there since the 1800s. She gave a wonderfully interesting and personal tour. Beautiful and whimsicle pieces of furniture, art and collectibles. Fascinating history lesson well presented. We really had a great time. One of our favorite plantation tours (out of 15 or so that we took in the NOLA, St. Francisville, Baton Rouge area). Make sure to make time for Ardoyne, it's worth it!

This an excellent tour, would recommend this to anyone. I could have spent a whole day looking at all the artifacts including some fantastic quilts and needlework.

Terrebonne Parish Garden Club visited on Feb 8,2019. Though I live in the area I had never been. Glad I went. Susan and Lee ate friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging. They take the time to answer all questions. Really enjoyed the history and the grounds. Ask about the attic and the peacocks ands the building ruins. Susan was the guide of my group and I couldn’t have asked for a better tour guide. It is well worth it.

I have been on many plantation tours over the years and this is one of the best I have ever been on. Tour guide/owner was very knowledgeable and pleasant. So many original things. It was fascinating.

My husband and I toured this beautiful home and walked around the grounds. The owner was our guide and the home has been in the family for six generations. Everything, from old wallpaper to furnishings was authentic and there were many artifacts they have found since moving into the home. You will not be disappointed if you choose to visit this home.
