We just attended the Los Islenos Fiesta this past weekend. It is about a 30 minute drive from New Orleans and the price is $5 to enter. Lots of craft booths and we met people dressed in the attire of the Islenos who arrived in Louisiana from the Canary Islands in the 1700s. We met a gentleman who does genealogy research and also met an author who wrote a book about how the Islenos and the Acadians all came to Louisiana. Several buildings on the property have been preserved and there are quite a few people on the premises to explain the history and answer questions. The food is also excellent, we had meat pies and a delicious catfish poboy. There was also a section with rides for the kids. Overall a great festival and the weather was perfect.

While going to the festival, I encountered people that are part of the Facility that will try to find what ever records of the your ancestors of Canary Island.
This is a wonderful thing since I tried to get this myself for the Island and found that they are reluctant to share are of the official departments

Did you know that the Spanish from the Canary Islands settled here in the 1700s ( the Islenos) and helped with the French Creoles to fight the British in the American Revolution?

It is an interesting history and this museum and staff do a great job in telling the story of the Islenos.

Arrived on afternoon of December 11. Posted hours indicated it should have been open. No one there. Called number posted on door. Also called published number. No answer at either.

Los Islenos Museum is Excellent and the Volunteers are very friendly. The Grounds are very well kept. The Museum is staffed by the Los Islenos Heritage and Cultural Society. In March they have their annual Fiesta, Spanish Foods and Music. A perfect time for a visit. Islenos are the original settlers of St. Bernard Parish from the Canary Islands.

My family and I went to see their Chritmas village display and bonfire. We got to tour the houses and hear how Christmas was celebrated back then. Tour was nice, everyone was very knowledgable and friendly.

My husband and I made a day trip to St. Bernard Parish about a week ago. One of our stops was the Los Islenos Museum.
We had the place to ourselves and got a personal tour from the historian of St. Bernard, Mr. Hyland. It was excellent!
Plus, found out we are related by marriage!

Los Islenos Museum is a complex of several buildings saved once, twice, thrice! Very interesting guided tour by the historian of St. Bernard Parish. Bill took us through several buildings telling the history of the Canary Islanders and others who settled in St. Bernard in the most interesting way. He answered all our questions with an incredible storehouse of knowledge about everything from the culture to architecture to ecological conditions. I can't wait to visit again when the weather cools down a bit!
We were fortunate enough to be there when there was also a collectors' car group there, so we were able to see some beautiful automobiles. We also got to sample delicious dishes that the Islenos might have prepared, but that was truly lagniappe. They don't do that all the time.
If you can, visit this museum complex. Besides all the history, the grounds are beautiful and the land beyond explanation. Take your children -- just in case we lose that precious land in the future.

My local Red Hat group had a delightful day. Our docent guide was steeped in the Islenos culture and the parish which opened our eyes to their place in American as well as local history. The exhibits were descriptive and would be valuable even as a self-guided tour. We had a great view of life at this end of the world and their contributions small and large to our area's culture.

The fiesta in March is fabulous but a visit to the museums is well worth the drive down in the parish.
