We walked along this attractive, comfortably wide, wooden-planked sidewalk after a delicious late lunch at Cotton, which is also in the Louisiana Cultural District in downtown Monroe. Just take a right out of Cotton's front door, and follow the sidewalk for a block or two to join this scenic boardwalk overlooking the river.

It was a late Friday afternoon, and several people were out and about setting up for the Saturday morning festivities. (We weren't able to make it on Saturday.)

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stroll along this raised, wooden riverwalk overlooking the Ouachita River. We watched a variety of busy turtles doing their thing along the shoreline below us. We saw three large, elegant wading birds posted along the shore, presumably looking for tasty fish. We saw some small fish in the river, too, and lots of dragonflies, and several adorable lizards along the boardwalk.

From a distance, we studied two of the moveable bridges that spanned the river, one that we presumed split in the middle and opened up like an upside-down V to let the tall boats by (a bascule bridge or drawbridge), and one the we presumed pivoted on its very strong structural support to open up a path for the taller boats (swing bridge). Very interesting! We don't see many swing bridges around! We would have loved to see that one in operation.

All in all, this was a lovely place to walk. There are green awnings, charming, tall green lamps, weathered wood, and a generally nostalgic, welcoming atmosphere to enjoy. It was fun looking down at the river, searching for wildlife and admiring the wide, fast water. The river was quite full that day and was very swiftly moving along!

There are plenty of benches along the way, if you prefer to sit a spell.

I would highly recommend this walk while you're in Monroe's downtown cultural district. It's a short walk. It might be worth the trip, on a non-event day, just to walk it's approximately 1/4 mile length, especially if you're into wildlife spotting, river-watching, and bridge-analyzing, like we are! :)

Otherwise, it may not be a destination in itself on a non-event day. For us, it was the perfect introduction to Monroe that Friday afternoon, following a scrumptious Southern lunch at the wonderfully inviting Cotton restaurant.

Wish we could have gone back the following morning to check out the vendors!

Art, crafts, food, fresh vegetables. You can find all these things. It changes every week. You can always find something good to eat. You can always find a little trinket or something nice for a gift. We go every week when it is open. Great view of the river. You can sit and watch the boats go by or just enjoy looking at the water and the occasional catfish.

This is fairly new and is a unique and wonderful shopping experience. Easy access and parkiing.
Lots of artist both local and regional with hand made arts and crafts as well as other vendors with clothing and accessories. In December they have a "shop 'til you drop" day that is fantastic.

This is worth scheduling in to your Saturday morning! Great atmosphere! Check their website for dates and times, as well as special events. www.downtownrivermarket.com It's like a fun festival each time they are open! I believe their schedule to be opened is April - June, and then September - November.

Downtown River Market is a great place to spend a few hours on a Saturday - wander around and shop local merchants and grab a drink or food.

The RiverMarket is a great arts and craft and entertainment experience along the beautiful Ouachita River. Starting in the Fall, each Saturday morning, vendors set up booth and tents to showcase their hand crafted items. There's food and live music. Great fun for the family!

The RiverMarket is the best way to spend your summer days - - right on the Ouachita River! The river walk boasts vendors from near and far hawking everything from beignets to birdhouses but what's really interesting is the holiday celebrations for July 4th and Christmas. The small town parades are not to be missed.

For Labor Day there was an event here with food stalls and live music and it was absolutely fabulous. Many people came out for the day and sat, ate, danced and enjoyed themselves.
There is a nice view of the river and shading and you can even go up a couple stairs to get a better view especially if you're taking pictures.
Unfortunately the river market is seasonal so I wasn't able to experience that but hopefully on my next visit I'll make it during the right season!
