It is important to know our history to understand where we are headed. We can repeat all our past mistakes if we are not aware of them.

Two of my 3x great-grandfathers fought in the Battle of Mansfield in the Texas infantry and cavalry, respectively. As a result, I was very excited to see the site of the conflict. Overall, the park has done a nice job preserving and marking what they can and presenting the history of the battle and the Red River campaign. The park ranger was very knowledgeable and answered questions I had about the disposition of troops. He showed a short summary video at the beginning of my visit and then directed me to the museum which is relatively small, but well put together. Unfortunately, there is no gift shop as the state determined that it was not making enough money. The battlefield itself has a few nice monuments and is well-maintained. It covers only a part of the Union lines as the Confederate positions are on private property. This area does include where some of the fighting occurred. Recommended for those interested in the war in the Trans-Mississippi or who have connections to the Red River Campaign.

The Mansfield State Historic Site is located on Highway 175, 3 miles southeast of Mansfield, LA. It preserves part of the battlefield of the Battle of Mansfield, or Sabine Crossroads, as it is also known, which was fought on April 8, 1864. General Nathaniel Banks led a Union Army of 30,000 men deep into Northwest Louisiana with the aim of capturing the important town of Shreveport, but was stopped by Confederate General Richard Taylor at Mansfield. Taylor had about 15, 000, or fewer, men on the battlefield, but was able to defeat Bank's larger force by exploiting several mistakes that Banks made. It was a bloody, fierce battle, that resulted in many Union soldiers fleeing for their lives from the battlefield. Mansfield was one of the few Confederate victories in 1864. The park itself is well maintained. There are battle markers and walking trails. The building at the park visitors center is not new, but the exhibits inside are, and they give a good description of what happened there. The quotes from the soldiers from both sides of the battle, North and South, give a lot of insight into what they experienced. For travelers on I - 49 between Lafayette and Shreveport, Mansfield is a detour of about 15 miles, but for anyone interested in the Civil War, it is well worth it to make the detour. A small admission price is charged, but the museum and park is free for senior citizens. I should also point out the young park ranger who staffed the museum was very helpful and informative.

Very good historic site with a good orientation film and nice small museum. The history of the Civil War's Red River Campaign was very nicely displayed with actual objects and letters from the soldiers.

Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.

If you are a history buff - especially the Civil War, this really is a must-see. Although the site has only a small portion of the original battle field, it is still substantial and very well maintained. The video does a great job of telling the story of the last Civil War battle in Louisiana and a Confederate victory which overcame all odds. The museum is also well organized with interesting exhibits. Letters from wounded soldiers to their family are really heartbreaking. Thinking of how many lost their life in this war, brings to the forefront and understanding of why passions still run very high. The State of Louisiana does a great job keeping the history in our day and age of various methods trying to rewrite or bury it. Take some time if you are going visit. A quick in and out just won't do.

This site is very well done and the visitor's center has a lot of history from both the Confederate and Union sides. There are lots of artifacts from both and a short video on how the battle happened over several acres. It is said to be one of the last battles the Confederates won. It hosts the old marble mantle from the White House before it was remodeled.

Visited with a large group after arranging a tour in advance. The park staff are very knowledgeable and put on detailed presentations for us along with a rifle demonstration and short walking tour. The park site itself is a rather small portion of the battlefield and the tree lines no longer very representative of the time of the battle, but they plenty make up for it with their detailed knowledge and a small but nice museum area. Very well worth a stop if you're in the area.

This is a small civil war site with a nice museum. My wife had a great great grandfather who was in this battle so that made it more interesting for us. There are a few monuments and a walking trail. It's worth a stop if you are a history buff.
