We took family photos there a few years ago. They turned out very nicely. They have a pier that you can walk out over the swamps, little bridges here and there. There was an gentleman that went out to feed the deer and raccoons every evening around 6:pm. He passed away and I guess the animals scatters to find their own food. Except the older ones that were too old to find food. I tried to go out and feed them but it was just too far away. Please, don't feed the animals. They get use to humans feeding them and when no one shows up they starve.

We visited SHJSP right after Christmas for a mini-family reunion.
Cabins were nice and there was plenty of free firewood since they’re clearing out some densely forested areas. The newer kid’s hiking trail was a nice addition since our last trip a few years ago.
There’s a new Rouses grocery store nearby (few miles) and a Walmart just a little further in case you need supplies.
I’ll add some pictures since there’s not many that are recent.

Excellent place to hang out in a cabin. It's very quiet. 2 parks for the kids to play. Cabin has coffee pot, pots and pans (bring PAM), has fire pit , no bbq pit, plates, coffee cups and dining ware. They provide bath towels, dish towels, bed linens, washcloths, toilet paper, microwave, refridge and freezer, oven and stove. In my research I found it difficult to see what they provide and don't provide..so,I hope you find this useful. Fat racoons around the property too!!! Great screened porches and chairs ! :-)

We met family here for a weekend getaway and rented cabins #10 & #11. Cabins are simple, but in good shape. Interiors are identical. They come with pots/plates/utensils/linens. Kitchen has a small fridge, cooktop, and oven. Small bedroom with full size bed and second VERY small bedroom with 2 bunks...good for up to 4 kids. The kitchen is adequate, but has very little room...only one person can work at a time (see photo). There's a nice, small living room with loveseat, table, and satellite TV. Only real con was the water heater ran out very quickly in both cabins....after one 3-4 minute shower we were out of hot water. There's a nice firepit and picnic table in front of both cabins. The park allows you to pick up firewood, but I'd recommend bringing some since there's a lot of pine which doesn't burn well. There's a couple of playground areas that the kids enjoyed. It was cold during our stay so we didn't have any mosquitos at all (probably not the case during warm weather). There's a gas station about a mile from the park entrance and a Walmart less than 10 minutes away if needed.

The park ranger was the rudest I've ever seen! He parked is truck and hid in the woods and spied on people then he would come out and tell us "If yall can't quit talking yall need to go inside" He then called the cops on a group of people that were absolutely not bothering anyone nor were they being loud. He and 5 police units come back with lights flashing going about 40 miles an hour through the campground, caused the biggest uncalled for scene with these TAX PAYING campers. We all pay to stay here and we should be able to sit outside until anytime we feel like it and talk with our family and have a good time. Sounds to me like the park ranger needs to get a life. WE WILL PASS THE WORD AROUND, and WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO THIS PARK!!!!

The park personnel and the park itself are always a great to us when we stay! The park is located deep in the woods yet very close to shopping and anything you may need. We stayed for a week while traveling with our 5th wheel camper. There are two loops and the first one you come to when you enter is developed with both sites with full hook-ups and sites with just electric and water. The second loop is somewhat developed but a bit more rustic, there are also tent sites on this loop. We use Reserve America which lets us look at the sites and try to get one of the two pull-thrus as we are pretty long (40 ft camper) and some of the interior sites are too small for us to maneuver. Great hiking trails along the water many picnic tables, lots of birds and things to see. If you are into Casinos there are several in a ten mile radius. One is about 2-3 miles from the park.

We had our family get-together here for the second straight year. This time we had Cabins 8, 9, and 11. See our prior review from December 2013 as most of the info in that at one still applies. I'll add a few new photos though. Cabins are identical and good for 2 adults and up to 4 kids. The main bedroom has double bed. Smaller bedroom has 4 small bunk beds with very little extra space.....essentially just a good place for the kids to sleep as there is no room to do anything else. The water heaters worked fine this time. We spent a lot of time on the small screened porch as it was a bit rainy during our stay. Kitchen has an oven and small microwave. It's stocked with the basics...plates, silverware, some pots/pans. We wished we had brought cookie sheet and scrubber to wash dishes. Bedrooms have sheets, blankets, and pillows. If you're looking to go out for dinner, we recommend Steamboat Bills on I-10 by the bridge. We didn't use it, but there is a nice frisbee golf course in the park. There are lots of picnic tables with grills near the playground.

My girlfriend and I spent the weekend tent camping here, we had a great time, they have tent pads designated by numbers, nice trials, plenty of deer and wildlife to see, clean restrooms and showers, the only semi negative thing is that they claim the sites have hookups( water and electricity) which is true, to an extent, the pad we had the power was about 20 feet away and water about 40 feet, also claim to have wifi, there is a signal and you can connect to it, but forget about getting any bandwidth, you can't load a web page, but neither of those were big deals to us, we loved it there.

This is a very very pleasant slice of Louisiana, the river, wetland with cypress trees, wildlife like deer, birds, squirrels, armadillos, (including the occasional "gator" sighting) and lots of turtles, frogs and more.
The camping area is nicely maintained and the fees are very reasonable. Of course since I live about 4 miles from the park and do day visits, I really don't know... it just looks good and there are usually a lot of camping and RV people there. I've heard that the cabins for rent are very nice.
We enjoy it and we folks come in from out of State, it is definitely on the list for us to visit.

Sam Houston Jones State Park is a great place to stay. The staff Ms Karen, Samantha, Becky are amazing, they are professional, kind and very accommodating. The park is beautiful. There are 3 type of camping sites. Tent sites, RV sites with ele and Water only and full hook up sites with ele, water and sewer. There are also cabins, playgrounds and some beautiful day use areas. The RV sites are nicely shaded. The grounds are kept clean and lovely( Thank you Becky). There are lots of thing to do in the park while staying there. The walking trails are great and being able to stroll along the river in the morning and evening is wonderful. There are deer, squires, lots of birds and turtles. To make reservations for this park you need to contact Reserve America. We will definitely be staying here again, and look forward to our next visit. Safe Travels.

Want to possibly book the Lodge Deluxe for McNeese graduation in Spring of 2019, but we are coming from Colorado. Does anyone know if the beds have linens and stuff on them? It needs to be glamping and not so much camping for us........:)

The park is very nice. There are places to park camping trailers, they have cabins to rent, there is a boat launch, and a bridge over a pond.
The deer are free in the park and you can feed them. They are no longer in a pin.
It is very relaxing.
I live about 4 miles from it and my grandchildren and I go just to see the deer and look around.

We will be traveling through Lake Charles in mid-January in our RV & thinking of spending two or so nights in the area. This will be our first visit to this area. Other than gambling, which we're not really into, is the Lake Charles area an interesting place to visit. Things to see/do? We like to get out & move after driving so like outdoor activities like biking, hiking, etc. but also enjoy a good craft beer or a fun happy hour. Any info or suggestions you might provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sam Houston state park offers great trail walking and really good biking trails. Lake Charles (about 15 min away from the park) has great food, if you go downtown you can find good restaurants and drinks. A couple of places include, Luna's (Sunday jazz brunch is good), Luna live (bands play here every night), McFarlins (a mix between a Scottish and Irish pub, great drinks and desserts). There is also a coffee shop downtown (stellar beans), they usually have bands on Friday nights. Also a local favorite is steamboat bills, offers Cajun and seafood. You can go on Luna's, luna lives and stellar beans Facebook to see what's going on when y'all are coming through. Also walking down town around the civic center is pretty, or walking around neighborhoods around there. I know laburge casino has had a skating rink outdoors in years past, so you might want to check up on that when y'all are there.
