Fun area to stop and stroll along the trail and boardwalks appreciating the swamp natural life. We enjoyed excellent weather in Mid- December and spent about 1 hour walking our dog. Very quiet and peaceful place, which also offers swamp tours for anyone interested.

We came here after a rainy overnight, and I'm glad I wore my rubber shoes, it was muddy! But besides that, it was a great walk and we saw some new species of birds, particularly the Little Blue Heron. Being there in April, we were able to see many active nests in the rookery - egrets and spoonbill roseates were the main two kinds we saw the most. We also saw many beautiful flowers in bloom including purple and yellow irises.

Our experience was not good. Since we are here in May, I did not expect to see a lot of birds, but we only saw very few. The big disappointment was the trails. The levee trail is 20' wide and had been bushogged early in the year, but was now knee high to shoulder high, with a 1' wide path. When you are expecting cottonmouths and gators on the trail, this is makes it extra exciting to say the least. The levee trail is little to no good anyway. The only part of the 5.5 miles of trail that is worth seeing, is the north east corner near the boat rides/ramp. You can drive around to the area and save a lot of walking. We did see 10 or more gators in the corner area. The rockery road is terrible to walk, with big rocks everywhere. It has little to no sights either.

You must come here to experience all that is the beauty of a natural swamp. Such a deal to take a swamp tour for two hours with people from around the world for only 20 bucks! Wear warm clothes and bring your smile. You won't be disappointed! Nice tour guides and friendly folks on the tours!!!!

I never new what a "rookery" was. We were taking the Cajun Country Swamp Tour and the guide took us by the rookery pointing out all the different species of birds. A bird watcher must and take the Cajun Country Swamp Tour because they take their time going by it trying not to disturb the wildlife.

Paid $20 each for my wife and I to take the Cajun Country Swamp Tour. Amazing
On the road in we spotted a 10" Gator and he certainly wasn't the last we saw. Guide was knowledgeable, friendly and so in terms me with the Swamp it was great
We saw numerous gators, turtles, snakes and some beautiful birds and trees. Two hours really well spent.
Super value for $20.

Great tour – our guide made a special point to find the alligators, and we saw several of them sunning themselves on top of logs… Who knew that they could live to be over 100 years old? He was very knowledgeable of all the wildlife, especially of the many types of water fowl that we saw along the way…

We really enjoyed the time we spent at Lake Martin, and will go back again if we are in the area. Most of our time was spent on a two-hour swamp tour that took us into many parts of the rookary. Some of the areas are closed during nesting season. We didn't see many birds in September, but we did get to see several alligators, including a baby, an alligator nest, and several adults. It was hot by the end of the 10:00 tour in mid-September, and I think the 8:00 tour would be better if you can get there that early. We saw some people kayaking on their own, and I think we will do that next time. This was a good stop on our multi-generational trip.

Lake Martin is pure...you will see alligators...but the rookery is amazing! The sounds and sights of birds fills the air...

This time of year, the trail through the alligator area is closed because of the nearness of aggressive alligator mothers, until September. Many of the nesting birds have also moved on. Still it was interesting to walk the wetlands trail. Better to visit in the spring!

Is there a walkway besides on the levee? And is there a place to have a picnic lunch?
Written September 20, 2019
Yes, on the east side there is a dirt path for some distance. The best picnic spot might be the Nature Conservancy education center on the south side. From the south you can walk on paths and some wooden elevated walkways to go further into the swamp. It's easier to see gators, egrets, etc. that way.

Moet je dit van te voren reserveren?

I don’t know. We directly called him.

Is the tour suitable for a 4yr old, 3 yr old and 4 month old? I'm thinking it'd be best if i put three youngest in a baby carrier.
Written March 31, 2017
Bring those baby backpack carriers and hats, sunscreen and bug spray and most importantly lots of water

I would like to know the location of the walkway you mentioned please!
Written April 26, 2015
As you enter the area, look to the left. There is a grass path about the width of a mobile home. That's the trail but you'll want to do the gravel part first as this is the roughest part of the trail and leave the grass path with all the baby alligators for last. Enjoy!

When will the rookery close 2015?
Written February 7, 2015
The rookery area in the southern end of Lake Martin is closed to all boat entry from February 1 through July 31 for breeding bird season. You may drive along Rookery Road all year round.
