We did a 1 day trek with San as our guide. The whole day was fantastic starting with a trip to a wildlife sanctuary that aims to release animals back into the wild that have been pets or injured by hunters. Its good to know that some of what you pay is going to support local causes. The hike was great in the national park and we got a chance to swim in 2 pools under waterfalls where we were the only ones there. The lunch, cooked on coals was fantastic. the last part of the hike is a bit more challenging up the side of the waterfall but its worth it for the views. You also get to see the impact that the war had with craters still visible in the undergrowth. Well worth the effort.

Today we did the one day trip with Hai’s eco wildlife tour and I am so glad we did this! The experience was brilliant from start to finish and authentic from the word go. If you are travelling to Phòng Nha you have to do this tour, the caves are great but the experience on the wildlife tour is so unique. We started at the rehabilitation centre to see injured and recused animals which was a great way to learn about the national park and the threats most of the wildlife faces. Then we go to the botanical gardens and start the trek, now this for me was amazing, I felt like I was in an Indiana Jones movie, we saw wild monkeys, geckos, water dragons, bats, among many other fascinating creatures as well as the most breathtaking views and waterfalls not to mention remnants from the war including bombs, bullets and secret roads . The bbq food is really good and really cool as you are literally sat in the jungle eating over open coals, next to a cave where soldiers hid during the war. The guide Tao and helper Hua were both really funny and knowledgeable they showed us fauna and taught us lots about the jungle and we felt 100% safe in their hands. Also Hai supports the local community and rehabilitation centre so by doing this tour not only have we had a great experience but we doing some good as well.

My wife and I booked a 2-day tour and it was amazing. Started off with a couple of hard questions from Thao about the wildlife and then to see some saved animals. It is good to know that your money is being well spent. Then off to the National park. At first I was disappointed, because the park had paved routes and wasn’t anything ‘Jungle’. But then Thao took the small trail and we took off into the real jungle. We then got a bit of rest and a nice lunch and then took off to the Weapon Cave. I’m not going to give the entire itenary, but Thao and her team are amazing people, the tour and the food were incredible, and we learned a lot. They were also very caring. My wife had food poisoning (earlier, not by them) and they really cared for her. They even prepared a suprise for our honeymoon. Amazing experience, will never forget.

On the 8th December my 15 year old son and I joined Hai’s Eco Conservation Tours - one day adventure, which was guided by San, Hai and others. The day started with an introduction to the wildlife rescue centre on the outskirts of Son Trach village. Our guide, San, explained to our small group about the history of the region around Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park and some of the challenges facing the people and wildlife. The rescue centre is also an important source of education for the local culture and serves as a driver for behaviour change in approaches to natural resource management. The Cologne Zoo has supported the important initiative which works to rescue diverse wildlife including 3 macaque species, Asian golden cat, hornbills, civets, pangolins, porcupines and more. After a tour of the rescue centre we were taken on an adventure through the dense jungle starting at the Phong Nha Botanical Gardens. San shared with the group the effects the war had on the Jungle and some of the activities that took place. Traces of the war are evident throughout the national park, outlining the remarkable resilience of the rainforest and its positive future prospects. The lunch provided by the tour at the base of a vast karst was one to remember. To top it all off, the tour became a real adventure when we were guided up the picturesque, yet challenging waterfall running through the park. All in all, this tour provided a bit of everything and a good alternative to cave exploring.
