About
St Vincent’s premier and longest-established bareboat yacht charter company, is owned and operated by the Barnard family who have been sailing the waters of the Grenadines for 7 generations. This background gives us the distinct and unusual advantage of insight and local knowledge that most charter companies, no matter how experienced, simply cannot offer.

We spent 2 weeks with Barefoot and it was all we had dreamed and hoped for. It was my 50th birthday present from my wife and a lifelong dream to be able to charter a boat and be able to sail on our own. Rob did a fantastic job in the first week with the training school. Refreshing my 15 year old UK Day Skipper training and getting my wife up to speed to be a valuable crew member and able to handle the boat. And the couple they had paired us with was a great fit and we had a fantastic time learning all the ropes and exploring the islands. In the second week we went out alone. Well trained, familiar with the boat and the area. Sailing along the beautiful islands and snorkeling with the turtles. In the wild and not organized with trained animals like they do over on Barbados.
The experience with Barefoot was fantastic from start to finish. Debbie answering the 100 questions we had in the months leading up to the booking and everybody at the base being super friendly, curious and always eager to help and please. Starting with reception, the restaurant, the ladies cleaning our room and doing our laundry between school and charter, Andrew patiently explaining us every nook and cranny on the boat, Charky and his dock crew getting the boat ready and carrying our supplies and luggage down the steep hill to the boat and back up.
Thinking we knew the area after a week of sailing school we nearly skipped the briefing with Phil Barnard before our solo trip. Man would we have missed something. He knows the area and all the little things that you won’t find in a guide book. And he and everybody from Barefoot was always available by phone whilst we were out there giving tips and tricks about weather, wind and currents. Unbelievable valuable.

We sailed Isaphil, a 38 foot Lagoon catamaran, both during the school and later on our own. She was well equipped and easy to sail and handle. Couldn’t have asked for more.

Already looking forward to coming back in the near future

TIP: On the day checking in or out take the dinghy over to Fort Duvernette and climb the stairs. Fantastic views. (See pictures)

I booked a trip through Barefoot in April of 2020 thinking covid would turn around by November of 2020. In late August 2020 I determined I would cancel because of uncertainties with flights and quarantine requirements. The company refunded me above the required refund on the charter agreement. They understood and were empathetic of the situation, which can not be said about many other companies I have dealt with during these times. The honest business practices will certainly make me a customer once all of this blows over- they aren't here just to take your money.

Additionally the booking process itself was seamless. Debbie was able to answer my questions and make tweaks to my original request to work with my schedule. Overall very pleasant experience despite unfortunately having to cancel.

I learned to sail with Barefoot Yacht Charters and their offshore sailing school (BOSS), and would love to share details for anyone considering a similar adventure.

(Full disclosure here: I'm related to the folks who run this place.)

Along with a couple and another solo traveler, I spent six days aboard a 52’ Beneteau yacht named Betty Blue, departing from St. Vincent and sailing through the islands of the Grenadines. Though we were strangers, from diverse backgrounds and with differing levels of experience, we learned and progressed as a group under the expert care of captains Guy and Jimmy.

During our trip we earned our ASA 101, 103, and 104 sailing certifications (me being the exception: as a total newbie I was happy to get the first two). Everyone was keen to learn, share knowledge and encourage one another, which added real depth to the learning experience. We spent our days practicing concepts like tacking and jibing, trimming sails, mooring, docking and crew-overboard maneuvers. At key moments we’d take exams, discuss our results, and celebrate our successes before turning back to our studies.

Besides the effective instructional format, the real magic — and this is where I give major kudos to Barefoot — is in the trip itinerary and the care and expertise of their captains. The schedule left ample time to recharge and enjoy our surroundings, which made learning to sail as enjoyable as it was rewarding.

Once anchored each day we were free to lounge, swim, cook up a meal, or go ashore for drinks and dinner. Our captain, Guy, was an excellent tour guide. He quickly got the vibe of the boat, recommending things accordingly and taking genuine pleasure in showing us natural beauty, people and culture of the islands.

Highlights included the floating bar and charming shops in Bequia; a beach picnic and magical ocean phosphorescence in the Tobago Cays; ridiculously spicy fried chicken in an alleyway on Union Island; a visit to the coolest little bar on earth in Mayreau; and a stop at Mopion Island. (Look it up: you’ll blow up Instagram with your photos.)

Did everything go perfectly well? Hell no. Weather can change on a dime, and boats are full of stuff that can malfunction or otherwise go wrong. Our struggles included everything from broken speakers to a not-insignificant spot of engine trouble on a day with no wind. But coming together as a crew to tackle problems was exhilarating and deeply satisfying. I learned volumes watching the problem-solving skills of our captain and crew at work — and now have great material for regaling the folks back home with my hilarious tales.

All told, it was an unforgettable travel experience. And it came with the added gifts of new friends, new confidence, and a spiffy ASA certificate to remind me of my accomplishment! Thanks to the excellent people Barefoot entrusts with their students, I’d do this again in a heartbeat.

Had an excellent “Post COVID” experience with Barefoot.

Debbie, Monica and Thor did a great job to get a yacht ready at short notice (due to delayed test results) and did their best to ensure we had a good time.

We chartered Willow Dew a well maintained Lagoon 39, Andrew’s yacht briefing was in depth and we had no issues. Highlights of the trip included swimming with turtles at Tobago Cays and lovely meals at the Sandy Lane yacht club (currently first night free) and Mustique (Recent COVID test required).

On the whole a great experience.

Sadly disappointed. We last visited around ten years ago and our kayak hire at Barefoot was an absolute highlight, as well as Dryftwood restaurant. We were so excited to visit again and this time with our teenage children.

Unfortunately there were no kayaks available on the day we visit, which I understand because we haven’t booked. But the reception team were really unhelpful. They wouldn’t give us any information about when they would be available and instead told us we should go to another site just down the road (who also were very unhelpful).

I realise this is primarily a sailing/yacht venue, but kayaking is specifically mentioned on the website. What upset me most though was how unwelcoming and unhelpful the staff were, they made zero effort to help us, or to enquire with their other staff about when we could hire boats. It’s just really sad. I hope it was just a one-off issue but it has really put me off visiting.

Although we live in the UK our family now has a house on the island for holiday rentals and sadly wouldn’t feel like we could recommend Barefoot to our guests.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am so sorry we did not have kayaks on the day you visited. We often have yacht charterers who have booked them in advance with their yachts so we don't always have kayaks at the base for hire without a booking. Please email us or come and see us again when you come back to the island. We take such pride in our level of customer service and people often comment on our staff being overly helpful and attentive. I'm sorry this was not your experience on this day.

My husband and I are first-time sailors, and we enrolled in the BOSS with Barefoot Charters. We were matched with an instructor and one other student, and spent 7 glorious nights on a live aboard 38' Lagoon sailing the Grenadine Islands together. We spent the days making our way south to Bequia, Chatham Bay, Mopion, and the Tobago Cays. Nights we made anchor in safe harbours next to the lobster beach BBQs and shared sunsetters at the floating bars. How amazing was that!

We highly recommend the adventure, and are looking forward to our new retirement hobby. Thank you Brian and Jimmy, you are both patient and skilled, and shared your local knowledge so we could get the most out of our holiday! We will be back!

We rented a mono for 7 days. Boat turned out to be in very bad condition. Compliants took more than 24 hours to be fixed and we had to change plans to get electrician to come. Last day propeller fell of! We handed in a 10 page foto documentation on safety and comfort faults on the boat and asked for Barefoot to suggest a reduction in rental price. We have not gotten any feedback. Even after multiple contract tries. Company and management seem not to care about delivering genuinely service and product. We had to go back to Europe and I honestly feel they speculating in this. Hoping we would not continue to follow up in this case. What morale is that?

Loose wires
Broken "navigation ipad"
Floor hinges broken
Fuel and other motor indicators not working.
Much more I can share if you wish.

We regret that you had issues with your charter. We do our best to follow up each charter with a quick interview so that we can fix any issues before the next customer charters the boat. It took us a couple weeks to address your trouble with the propeller as we had to haul the boat to properly assess the issue. We now know that the propeller did not fall off but in fact was damaged along with the prop shaft and gear box as a result of an incident that occured during your charter but was not disclosed to us. All issues have now been fixed and we are able to charter this boat again.

Location was great, the staff were great....unfortunately the sailboat ( 45 Bavaria) left alot to be desired.
We were told we would have cockpit navigation- and did not. We paid extra for WiFi and the tablet did not work. The cockpit instrumentation/throttle were corroded and not in good working order. The fridge was barely functional. The hatches in the forward cabins leaked and in heavy weather the bedding and clothes got soaked. The lines were very old ,frayed and knotted. The dingy oars not useable as there were no oar locks. We advised company welll ahead of time that we needed electrical support for CPAP, when we arrived the electrical was not satisfactory despite bringing on an electrician, luckily the sailor had a portable CPAP battery.

We have just returned from a wonderful week of sailing and touring the islands of the Grenadines on the catamaran Blue Jay
Our captain Orlando was a fantastic host, very knowledgeable and professional he was excellent with the entire family but went well beyond our expectations. The kids, little boys of 6&8 will never forget this experience and Orlando really looked out for them and kept them completely engaged for the entire trip. He has become family
I will highly recommend your operation
Well done Cap.

We had a great trip.
The Grenadines lived up to our expectations and we had good sailing despite some challenging conditions with the weather.
The Barefoot base people were warm and friendly, and we had an excellant chart briefing from Philip.
We did encounter some problems with the boat but Thor was very fair and provided a discount that left us satisfied with the whole experience .
