- Alta MWest Monroe, Louisiana2 contributionsBeautifully decorated for Christmas!!We enjoyed our evening at the Houmas House. Tried to book dinner for the Carriage House but it was full. I told our friends it was ok because I knew the cafe had great food. But to my surprise once we got there, the cafe no longer serves dinner. (You need to change your website) But I have to say the young lady at the gift shop was able to get us into the Carriage House for dinner. Thank you so much. It was wonderfulVisited December 2022Written December 13, 2022
- DonnaBourgMetairie, Louisiana1 contributionWonderfulHoumas House is a must see on the Plantation route. The gardens are well maintained and beautiful. Its a very peaceful stroll thru the grounds. And the Carriage House restaurant is elegant but casual and the food is delicious. Highly recommend a visit to this Plantation.Visited December 2022Written December 26, 2022
- NicoleSostarics1 contributionAMAZINGCarriage House was delicious and our server was a doll. Cheryl, our tour guide was INCREDIBLE in every way...incredibly knowledgeable, kind and funny! I want to go back with some friends and I hope I can request her. :-) The grounds, mansion and history are just amazing. The love of doggies made it even better. I will always recommend Houmas House!Visited December 2022Written December 28, 2022
- Patti B29 contributionsInteresting and Lovely PlantationOur second visit to this plantation house to share it with a friend. We had an exceptionally beautiful day to tour the house and gardens. We started with a stroll to lunch in the beautiful Carriage House. Our server, Josephine, was a delight and the food was delicious. We followed up with a fun and fact filled tour of the house by our lovely guide, Ruby. She was obviously enthusiastic about the history of the house and grounds and sharing that history with us. We followed our house tour by walking the remainder of the grounds and visiting the large gift shop. A lovely way to spend an afternoon. There is also a museum which we skipped today.Visited February 2023Traveled with friendsWritten February 9, 2023
- Emily S1 contributionTouring With VikingHonestly my favorite part was seeing the dedication and work that the new owner put into reviving what is a wonderful lovely old planter's house. I also very much enjoyed walking the grounds, seeing the Spanish Moss dripping from the 700 year old oak trees. Our tour guide Darren was very informative and really brought the history and the ownership of the house to life. I did have a question about a statue in your garden it shows what I think is Poseidon with A lady; I wondered if you had more information on the statue and I didn't get a chance to ask. Thank you so much for the privilege to walk about your home.Visited February 2023Traveled with friendsWritten February 14, 2023
- Lucydog53New Orleans, Louisiana85 contributionsOVER THE TOPMy husband and I came to the Houmas House and gardens for my 70th Birthday. It was so delightful. The owner has thought of ever detail, from the soaps, to the fabulous meal we had in their restaurant to the gorgeous gardens and all. Our TOUR GUIDE for the house was so knowledgeable and wonderful. Our room was fantastic too and the best part was they let us bring our old dogs. Its hard to travel with older dogs or find very nice places that accomodate dogs. Thank you so much for a birthday to remember always!!Visited February 2023Written February 24, 2023
- RoAl19741 contributionGreat overnight trip!My teenage daughter and I love history. She enjoys going to the plantations and learning about life in the mid-1800s. We have done a plantation tour before when she was younger but this time we decided to make our little trip an overnight one. We are local, from the New Orleans area. The last trip we had visited Houmas House and gardens and it was so amazing and beautiful!! We knew for sure this time we wanted our overnight stay to be there this time. Everything was fantastic! The room was very clean and decorated beautifully with furniture that mirrors the time period of the main house. The grounds are beautiful and manicured impeccably. The staff was very professional and friendly. There is a museum and walkway over the river road to get to the river. This was not there the last time we visited. We did but have time to do the museum but we did walk to the river. What a great idea to give guests the ability to see the river which is the reason why these beautiful homes are built where they are built. We hope to see the museum next time. We ate at the Carriage House for dinner and it was so delicious!! The grounds are lit up at night and weather was perfect so, while we could have called for a golf cart to bring us to dinner, we walked to and from the restaurant. The next morning we walked to the Dixie Cafe for breakfast (if you stay you get vouchers for free breakfast buffet). The food was so fresh and delicious especially for a buffet!! Very enjoyable stay at Houmas House and Gardens. My daughter and I love this plantation and will definitely go back!!Visited February 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 26, 2023
- kktrumSherrill, Iowa1 contributionExcellentWe had such a nice time at Houmas. The tour was excellent. Very informative guide who welcomed questions. Gardens were bloom in early March and there was a lot of ducks and swans to watch. Really beautiful. We wanted to book a table in advance for the French restaurant but we had to visit early in the week. Definitely next time. The restaurant we did try for lunch was very nice and had the best lump crab cake. Wish we’d skipped the dry red fish and so so po boy and just eaten crab cakes! Bread pudding was good too.Visited March 2023Written March 15, 2023
- Heather WBaton Rouge, Louisiana3 contributionsDisappointmentI took a friend who had never been to any plantation here. The tour was so quick we couldn't really take the time to enjoy the history or artifacts. It was clear they were on a tight schedule to usher you through. Also, there is limited signage around the property directing you where to go. We ate an early dinner at the Carriage House and it was okay but a bit overpriced for what we got. FOr $36 we got a quick, rushed tour. For another price we could have gone through the "museum" I think they called it but who knows how much time we'd have there. Overall, Nottoway is a much better experience - just wish their restaurant was open.Visited March 2023Written April 11, 2023
- Neil HGainesville, Florida4 contributionsHoumas House MuseumThe guided tour of the house was interesting, and the guide was knowledgeable, but the most interesting thing, to me anyway, was the museum. They have an incredible collection of plantation era items that could have come from the Smithsonian. Most have cards showing they were donated by local families. I learned many things I'd never known before about plantation and general life in the 1800's. Do you know where the term "basket case" originated? You'll find out that and much more. Plan on 2-3 hours, more if you want to eat there. They have several choices, from simple quick food to 4-5 star resturant.Visited April 2023Written April 22, 2023

For visitors hoping to learn about life on the Louisiana plantation parade, Houmas House and Gardens provides a great resource in the River Museum. The detail in the exhibits is almost too much to digest in one visit and we wished a summary book had been available. So a visit to one or more plantations would benefit from a start here assuming you come with very deep pockets! The admission fee of the museum and house is eye watering - far above neighbors long Oak Alley or superlative Laura. And worse overnight guests of the inn do not get admission as part of their stay which is poor business for the hotel guest anyway.
Gardens are lovely but serve no historic purpose other than to make this a wedding venue cash machine. Any sense of valid history or reliable commentary on the Big House is lost at the gift shop book store. Interior furnishings are glitzed up with clutter and a sugarcane mural in the entry hall a poor substitute for Zuber historic wallpaper!
The Carriage House Restaurant and Turtle Bar were a gracious surprise with fabulous service from Loren and an imaginative chef. So disappointment that history has lost out to commerce makes me rate this attraction two stars out of five.

We had a great time wandering the gardens, which were full of giant oak trees and tons of southern charm. The house tour was interesting and informative, and we enjoyed the option of playing the antique piano in the house on the tour. Our tour guide was able to answer all our questions, even our oddball questions about various antiques all throughout the house.

We signed up for the tour and our tour guide was funny, personable and overall excellent. After the tour we walked the grounds and enjoyed everything it had to offer. We decided to eat dinner at Turtle Bay restaurant and our dinner was delicious. I had the salad and soup followed by dessert. Our server was also excellent. It was worth the hour drive from New Orleans. The only negative and it was minor, was we waited in the lobby of the restaurant for about 5 minutes and ended up having to track down a hostess in the restaurant to be seated.

This is one of the “River Road Plantations” of Louisiana. The best to be said is that the gardens are extensive and well maintained. The house is large and typical of the 1840’s. Unfortunately, parts of the house appear not to have been maintained since then.
The tour content was more representative of 1821 than 2021. Many of these plantations not only acknowledge the existence of the enslaved people responsible for creating the vast wealth, but also go to the trouble of presenting a history of the trade and its effects on the people before and after reconstruction.
Houmas House tours don’t even mention the enslaved laborers. Rather the wealth of the “masters” is lauded along with the creation of the “Southern Cross” flag by one of the owners. For those who are not aware, this is the predominant modern symbol of the confederacy.
The inn accommodations are very nice and very overpriced. In addition, they are a very long walk to the Carriage House dining facility (at opposite ends of the very large property) The free breakfast was too expensive (a McDonalds breakfast would be much better, and Cracker Barrel would seem like Heaven by comparison.
To say the least, we did not enjoy the experience.

I was amazed by the transformation of this old plantation into a living history museum. In addition to the home, make sure you budget time for both the museum and lunch at one of the restaurants. Our experience exceeded our expectations. We are looking forward to returning with a group of friends so they too, can experience this jewel on the river mid-way between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Our tour guide Joy gave a very informative tour of the house. She was knowledgable about many of the objects and paintings in the house along with the family history of many of it's previous owners and residents. She talked a little bit about slave history as well. She also infused the tour with her humour. This tour is worth it and reasonably priced.

Houma’s House. Super !! We’ve toured most of the plantations in LA and southern MS. This was probably the best. The house has stayed in only 3 or 4 families and never ravaged in Civil war, so it has stayed in great shape. 75% of the items/ furnishings inside are original to house. A real treasure trove. So many good stories. Guides are very knowledgeable.
Gardens and huge oaks are a visit unto themselves.
Big gift shop.
Bar and restaurant, we had shrimp po boys and the are real New Orleans good.
I usually get dragged to these but I would love to go back. Too much to take in for one trip.
Where else would you see a 4000 pound pool table and on the second floor no less ?

The guide did a good job but it was obvious that the tour focuses on the current owner. You get some info about the history but the building and grounds have been through a lot of changes over the years. So it is how this owner interprets the way things probably looked. He definitely has an eclectic style when it comes to gardens. I don’t know why he added a Japanese garden. It really seems out of place. We felt the price was high for a one hour tour.

We had reservations at The Carriage House for lunch for 6, we had a quick and really fun lunch of crab cakes and shrimp poboys in great surroundings. Enjoyable place to eat given the sophisticated setting and very, very, very large center table. A real treat. We then headed to the tour of the big house, well worth it. The ancient trees are Insta-worthy/noteworthy/swoonworthy etc to meander around, but the gardens otherwise are nothing spectacular and a bit wonky. Yes, many acres, but generally scheduled out w weddings etc. Totally understandable for a private property and great way to cashflow along with the restaurants. We felt the gardens could be taken to a whole new level....but I digress. How about a serious head gardener? We also enjoyed the imposingly large people bridge to a view of the Mississippi. Overall highly recommend and the lodging with evening dining looks to be very enticing. Summary - tons of photo ops, not a letdown to see the Old South. We did not tour the museum but for time, maybe we will catch it next round.

This is a lovely home surrounded by a variety of beautiful gardens. Our young guide was well informed on the history of this site, fun and very considerate and accommodating to old and young visitors alike. Our luncheon at The Carriage House Restaurant was absolutely delicious and filling. We would love to come back and stay overnight one day!

We visited the Home and garden this past week for the second time with our daughter. The admissions price had increased understandably but the tour was a disappointment. The overall experience was very short and no where close to our first experience. Not very informative and the tour only had 5 people in the tour. Felt very rushed. The garden was spectacular and the head grounds keep sure made up for the disappointment of the tour. He made a point to voluntarily answer any questions about flowers we ask. We love the home and garden but for the price increase we expected more ..

Perhaps your party of 5 seemed less engaged because you were attending a second time? My experience was that our tour guide was very informative, cordial, allowed us plenty of time to view the rooms and pieces. He also answered questions that we had. I never felt rushed at all. The price also seems normal in this current financial climate.

Sorry, but I am absolutely shocked by the renovation of this home.
Sadly, not in a good way.
Wondering if anyone else feels the same?
I am sure it is lovely, but such a departure from what I saw when I visited many years ago.
Nothing authentic about any of it. IMO a true nightmare.

I am truly sorry that you were shocked by the renovation, as compared to your visit many years ago. The fact is that the current presentation is very close in design and colors as to the original Houmas House. The exterior colors are exact, and the interior colors were taken from the original colors of the Hampton homes in South Carolina that are dated the same as Houmas House. The previous owners of Houmas House painted everything white, which is not the original color. The colors in style in the 1820's were brilliant jewel colors. Houmas House was furnished with very grand pieces, similar to today. In fact we have more original pieces in the Mansion today, that have been present in over 100 years. The current presentation is very accurate in style, color, and furnishings. Almost every piece of artwork is from Louisiana and of the period from 1820 to 1860. We worked very had to make Houmas House, as accurate as possible. Please judge us by what is present, and not by what existed 20 years ago. The renovations made in 1940 were simply not accurate.
