Great hike but not for the faint of heart!
Aug 2021 • Couples
A nice hike, but not for the really young or faint of heart. Start with 20 steps down at the trailhead. Then there is about 1/4 mile slowly descending trails until you reach the final 1/8 mile… which has about another 180 steps. Benches are conveniently located about every 1/16th of a mile. Great views at the end. The challenge is the hike back up to the parking lot!

We hiked up to chain rock, while it was an easy track if you're not i. Shape it will challenge you. The views from the top were breathtaking.
It's well worth the effort to reach .

Definitely not for young kids

This trail is advertised as a must do in the area. Taking our two year old (whom has hiked before) didn't cross my mind as something that would be a bad idea until we got to the end of it. There is no safe way for the average person to get up to where the rock is chained. The last 1/4 mile is very uneven, slippery, there was an active wasp hive and no way for my daughter and I to safely get to the end. I know the trail is marked as an intermediate, but they shouldn't hype it up as a "must see" tourist hike and not build stairs or a simple platform to actually get to the end safely. My husband and son were able to get to the very end and see the chained rock and take pictures, but I never got to go.

Warning to old people-go at your own peril.
Aug 2020 • Couples
Little did we realize that the hike would be an endurance test for older people. We got an inkling when we had to go downhill to get to the rock. Remember, it’s uphill all the way back. The last 1/16th of a mile is over steep, slippery rock. My wife did not attempt the last part. I made it up there through sheer stubbornness and obvious stupidity. I can’t say it was truly worth it. We were both soaked in sweat by the time we made it back to the car. It’s fine for younger and more athletic folks. I wouldn’t take small children on this hike unless you plan to come back with a few less or carry them back. At least I got some photos for the effort-and aching muscles.

Nice hike! Trail is well maintained and marked well. Down hill all the way then up hill all the way back. Its definitely not too bad though as there are plenty of benches along the way to stop and rest. Beautiful views at the end

THINK BEFORE YOU GO!
Nov 2019 • Couples
My husband and I were here Saturday, 11/30/19. The weather was sunny, windy and in the upper 50’s. We drove up to the Lookout where there is a parking area which overlooks Pineville, KY.
We started down the stairs to the maintained trail headed to the Chained Rock. Next we navigated the many wooden steps (some of which have been recently replaced). As we continued on we were walking on tree roots, rocks and came across several small patches of running water from up top. I stopped and went no further when the trail became so rocky and almost unnavigable in tennis shoes! My husband had never seen the rock, so as I rested up against a tree, he forged ahead. It was worth the scary trail that was left to see the chain and rock, he says! It’s slippery up there and you really need to THINK ABOUT this before hiking down.
Once he returned, we headed back up to the parking area. Going up was actually easier because there are benches along the way so that you can catch your breath!
I’m 65 and the last time I was here was at least 20 years ago.....most likely my last time.
CAUTIONARY NOTE: I would NOT take little kids on this trail!

Beautiful views
Sep 2019 • Family
This was my first trip to chained rock. It was absolutely beautiful. The Hike to chained rock was easy for the most part. Downhill with a lot of steps. Once you got the chained rock you had to climb up steep rocks which was a little nerve wracking because there are no safety barriers to keep you from falling. It was well worth it for the views. The hike back to the parking area was a work out for sure. We stopped at almost every bench to catch our breath and have some water. Its almost completely uphill back to the car. I definitely recommend if you are in the area to hike this trail.

The hike down is not too bad but the hike back up is a bit of a challenge. It's really something to see but be careful. No handrails or safety features of any kind.

Chained rock is a very nice short hike. I love to go barefoot on the rocks and do some yoga! A great spot to catch the sunset as well.
