I could only spend a short time but it was well worth the 5 hour drive to get here. This place, and the organization it represents, is a national treasure . Great visit; impressive facility and artifacts; friendly and helpful staff. My special thanks to Head Research Librarian Joe Hardisty for his informative overview and insight. I'll be back...

Genealogy Research
Nov 2020 • Couples
My wife took me here as a birthday surprise to research family that I had suspected being involved in the American Revolution. The people that work here are fantastic and were extremely helpful in pointing me in the right direction and showing me how to use the genealogy searches they have on the computer. The “Library” they have is VERY impressive and any information they have about family heritage and genealogy is the best I’ve ever seen. To be honest, I had NO IDEA this place existed and is 45 minutes from my house! I will be back soon to do more research and fill out the forms associated with my family history to prove that my 7th Great Uncle was in fact a 2nd Lieutenant in the American Revolution. I recommend this place to ANYONE who is serious about their family heritage and love to do historical research. I could spend hours and hours in this place!

I only had a few hours to spend here, but it was so worth my time. I really think the staff are amazing and helpful. The collections are sure to have something you may need, just a great location, easy local access, and an exceptional amount of data to access.

Great for research and some rare displays

Great visit and they have an outstanding library for American Revolution Research. Amazing efforts are being made in the works to develop into a premier museum. This will be a another crowd draw for history bluffs and an economic boost to downtown Louisville.

Perfect place to visit or reseach lineage

My visit was a spur of the moment - I was on my way to the airport and that morning I decided to visit the SAR library on the way. Joe, the Librarian, offered a tour of the resources and was very helpful when I had questions. The library is extensive and very resourceful, not just for genealogy but for the history of the SAR and our country. I highly recommend a visit. Susan in the merchandise department was also very helpful!
Thanks Joe and Susan! I will see you all next trip!

Dropped in to do some quick research on some ancestors. I was met by the Librarian and given a quick tour of the facility, as well as an excellent description of in-house publications and online assets. I could only stay for a few hours, but I did locate an old newspaper online from 1896 that had crucial information on my great grandmother.

My son is really interested in genealogy and really wanted to check this place out. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. They have an amazing collection of printed and digital resources to help research your family or any local history anywhere in the United States. If you're interested in genealogy, this place will not disappoint.

Worth it just for the librarians

I stopped here briefly during a family trip to Louisville. I'm a genealogy buff with a 5th great grandfather who was in the Boston Tea Party, so I thought it couldn't hurt to pop in. All the information I found on him was already digitized and so I didn't get new information on him, per se, BUT what I did receive were some great search tips from a very helpful librarian! I feel like I'm probably an above average researcher but I definitely learned some new tricks in a very short amount of time. It's clear that the staff here love what they do and that kind of enthusiasm is definitely infectious!
