- john cNashville, Tennessee81 contributionsGood Bet!We drove out to Churchill Downs and walked in to buy tickets for the tour. There was plenty of parking but it was a walk to the museum entrance. Since we did not book tour tickets ahead we had to wait about an hour. But in the meantime we could go through the museum. The museum was very interesting and well laid out. A lot of Churchill Downs racing history information but there were some hands on activities that our grandkids liked (8-1/2 and 6). The guy who sold us our tickets also was going to be our tour guide. He told us to watch the movie and he would be there to take us out on the tour. The movie was excellent and was presented in the round. We all sat on bar stools that we could turn and watch the movie move across the screen. A really unique way of watching a movie. The tour guide started by taking the group (around 40 people) to various places on the grounds. He was very interesting and gave out a lot of good facts. Some people had trouble hearing him (he carried a potable mic) but we had no problem. He was very good at answering questions. There was some walking involved but very few steps. There is an incline that takes you out to the bleachers and the track. This is where the tour guide spent most of the time so you could sit. After the tour the guide directed us to an area where you could get close (but not touch) a horse. Tour itself lasted about an hour. You could go back through the museum if you want. There was an exhibit on the second floor of the museum dedicated exclusively to Secretariat but we did not go up there. I highly recommend this tour. The grandkids really liked it. We were all familiar with Churchill Downs but had never been there. But you need to check if there is any racing the day you want to go as the tour may be shortened or changed. There are other tours but we opted for the basic tour.John, we're so glad that you enjoyed your visit! Thanks so much for giving such a detailed account of your experience! We hope you and the grandkids come back to see us again!Written October 27, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 13, 2023

- lenzirn15Fort Mitchell, Kentucky42 contributionsWe loved it!My husband and I had a great time learning about the history of the derby as well as touring the facility. Our tour guide, Max, was very knowledgeable; the museum had many interesting artifacts to explore; and the track itself was beautiful! I would definitely recommend stopping by, and we will certainly return with our son when he is a little older (he is currently 2 with the attention span of a gnat).Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 5, 2024
- RobertSuzanneTucson, Arizona179 contributionsSuperstars and Spires TourWe took the Superstars and Spires Tour. This behind the scenes tour at Churchill Downs took us to Millionaire’s Row, the Stakes Room, and the Turf Club. We got to be in the upper stands to view the track right at the finish line. That was all exciting. If you are looking to see the stables or be on the track itself, this is not the tour for that. Also, the tour guide was limited in his knowledge and information to whatever is on his script. He was not able to answer even the simplest of questions, some of which he should have expected and known the answers to.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 27, 2024

Took my niece and nephew who enjoyed it learning about the horses and going into Churchill Downs. Plenty to do inside with the wrap around movie about the history of Kentucky Derby to the interaction items. My nephew loved the one on betting he just loved how the lady asked how you would like to place your bet. We're so glad that you and your family enjoyed the museum!! - Janice C44 contributionsOne of the best tours of our vacation! What an experience! One we will never forget! We reserved a tour of the backside and special areas of the track/complex. There were only 7 people on the tour plus our tour guide, Stan. You can Dtan really loves his job… never “over the top” like some tour guides… very personable and informative. He encourages questions and offered to take pictures of our groups/families.. never feeling bothered or put off. The tour started with going to the tail of the track to see the horses being exercised. Stan explained a lot to us. We ride a golf cart to the infield then to the stable area (thank goodness with the June heat and humidity!). We got to feed a horse a peppermint, saw one getting some “new shoes”, even got to see premier trainer Steve Asmusson (my son got yo take a selfie with him!). We visited millionaires row, the new beautiful paddock area, saw the twin spires close up and more! Highly recommend this tour. We spent about 3 hours there and was much much better than I ever thought it would be.We're so happy to hear that you had such a wonderful experience visiting the museum! In addition to checking out all the exhibits, you can place fake bets on races and play an arcade like horse racing game. With your admission you get a free tour of the racetrack and the ability to watch a unique 360-degree film. We're so happy to hear that you had such a wonderful experience visiting the museum! Visited the museum early in what was a long day of exploring Louisville and even though we do not follow horse racing we found the museum fascinating. Starts with an in the round theatre show which was both informative and easy to view. (Did not make you dizzy!) Our ticket included a short walking tour inside the paddocks and out to the edge of the track during the time horses were being exercised.
The museum exhibits are on EVERY aspect of racing (from the horses to the jockeys, owners, trainers and everything in between. All were very interesting and many were interactive.
Well worth a visit.
But, important to give yourself time. Is not something you an walk through in a few minutes. There is a lot to see, view, and hear.
Also recommend going to races if in progress on the day you are there. The seating areas (many out of the sun) were fairly empty on the Friday afternoon we were there. We were able to pick up a very detailed publication (free) on the races that day and it was fun to see and hear all that happened. And the mint juleps we purchased were true mint juleps and came in a very nice souvenir glass.

We explored the Kentucky Derby Museum, watched "The Greatest Race" and had Alex give us a very informative tour in and around the Derby.
This was our first visit and we very much enjoyed all the interactive displays, historic memorabilia and all the historical facts given during this tour.
A fantastic way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

We visited the Kentucky Derby Museum and Churchill Downs. First, we took the tour, lasting about 30 minutes. The tour guide was very informative and entertaining, with stories and little known facts about the Kentucky Derby. After the tour, we visited the museum and watched the 18-minute movie about the derby's history. The movie, The Great American Race, was shown in the 360-degree round theater and was fantastic. The museum had excellent displays although the interactive displays are not accessible due to the pandemic. It was a great morning out and I highly recommend it!

We had a good time at the museum and it gave us some fun things to see - costumes, trophies and awards, photographs and a good history of the tradition of the Kentucky Derby. The tour of the grounds that was included in the price of admission was the highlight of the day. We got to walk on the paddock - see the track itself and the stands. Our guide was knowledgeable. We ate at the Cafe there and the food was OK and we had fun drinking a mint julep on site.

The museum here is really designed well. Two floors of exhibits can keep you busy for an hour to two hours. We also went on the van tour back to the paddocks. The guide was very informative. Still interesting in absence of horses. Costs $10 extra.
We did not go on the free walking tour. Time ran out.
Have a mint julep in the cafe.
The guide told me I had to know thel0 horse that won the Derby the year I was born: Sunny's Halo.

We had a private tour with Kayla. She was a great storyteller and attached those stories to the facts of the facility, personalities and amenities. We learned a lot about the history and enjoyed seeing the early morning workout with the horses.

After touring Churchill Downs, I visited the museum and it was a fun, informative experience. The Derby museum has information on every aspect of the Derby from past winners, property history, fashion, jockeys, and the life of the racehorse. I enjoyed learning about the life of the racehorses. The museum also has a restrooms and a gift shop. I enjoyed my visit!

if you’re in kentucky, you should totally check out this museum, even if you don’t know anything about the derby. i came in knowing nothing about the races but came out with a great respect for the derby after spending time in the museum. this museum was so fun to visit and my family really enjoyed it. the movie was amazing and well put together. our guide was great too and knew a lot about the derby. it was so cool to actually go into the churchill downs and see the track. i’m not a museum type of gal but this museum was very fascinating and i was never bored. there was so much to do and see, i would totally go back again. the staff was very enthusiastic and friendly and made sure that this was a safe place to be during covid. there were lots of hand sanitizer bottles throughout the museum and i saw staff members wiping down the seats after we watched the movie. this place was fantastic and i’m so glad i was able to go. so excited for to watch the kentucky derby in september :)

We have driven by here many ti
Ed but today decided to go into the museum and we had a blast!!! The 360 theater allows you to experience the Kentucky Derby but avoid the crowds and headaches attached to attending. Loved all the interactive features from riding in a race to photographic opportunities to the ability to see any of the previous Kentucky Derbies. The collection of Derby hats was wonderful as well as the exhibits about the jockeys and trainers. There is free parking on site and location is handicapped accessible. There are several different discounts for tickets. The tour of Churchill Downs was great and given by a docent who LOVES her job. She used a microphone so everyone could hear her. It was really fun to stand in the place, see the dirt tract and imagine the sounds on race day. The gift shop is very nice and there is a cafeteria for food if you need it.

Even though Churchill Downs is closed to spectators for events, the museum is very educational about the Kentucky Derby race. From horses to jockeys you learn what it takes to make it to the race. Highly recommend. Spent 45 min looking at exhibits then watched the 20 min movie. You can see it all in 90 min. Would have liked to have done the tour with admission but it was already sold out. The Churchill Downs facility was not accessible without it. Great museum.

How much walking for the Churchill Downs tour? Are there scooters or wheelchairs available?
Written October 1, 2021
Don't know about scooters or wheelchairs, we did not see anybody in them during our visit.
The tour is only one-half hour and you see very little of the track and the facilities. You essentially walk along the "Wall of Fame" of part Derby winners with a few stories of some of the more notable horses. Then you go into the grandstand and walk down to the trackside rail. After that, you are done and led back into the museum which is not very large.
The best part of the whole experience is the movie in 360-degree surround, where you stand, that covers the history of the derby and the breeding of derby horses. It is about a half-hour long and worth the price of admission alone.
All told, we spent about two hours at Churchill Downs. The parking lots are huge as can be expected and they have golf carts running around ferrying guests, at least on the way back to our car. I guess they certainly would have adequate handicap parking and transport if needed.
One last thought, we did not know there would be racing on the day of our visit. We had an itinerary set to do other things in the Louisville area but we would have loved to stay and watch a few races, take in the aura of CD and maybe even make a couple of $2 bets. Our planning mistake.

If I have a General Walking tour ticket for 10:30 AM, can I tour the museum and/or view the movie prior to that time? Or is 10:30 AM my admission to the whole venue?
Written August 29, 2021
You can arrive as soon as the venue opens and tour the museum until your tour starts. They will direct you when and where to meet prior to your tour. You can then visit the venue following your tour as well. Have Fun!
Written August 29, 2021
On the website I see there are many different types of tours. I have a family of 5 (3 kids 10,10,7). Would the general admission & historic waking tour be good or should I go for a more specific tour? Will we miss a lot? We’re not big into horse racing, but I’d love to visit to learn more and see this iconic place.
Written April 23, 2021
The general admission and historic walking tour is a great start and is fairly economical. Be sure to watch the Greatest Race movie. It is one of the my favorite parts of my visit.
I took the behind the scenes tour and really enjoyed seeing Millionaires Row and Mansion areas. The training and backside tours were not offered on my visit because it was offseason. I would think the horse-involved tours would be really interesting.
Like you, I am not a big horse racing enthusiast. I stopped in because I was in town and looking for something to do. After my tour I have started to tentatively plan for attending the Derby. I feel like I have to be part of it at some point.
I hope you have a great experience here.

Yes, even on race days, our historic walking tour still goes out to the track! If you're lucky, you might be able to catch a race, but you do have to stay with the tour group while on Churchill Downs' property. We are closed on Thurby, Oaks and Derby, and no tours go out those days.

Highly recommend the outdoor and indoor tour. The movie is great, museum probably an hour not including movie but make sure people know there is a second floor part to the museum. Several of our friends totally missed this part of the museum. Outside tour portion was an hour plus, very worthwhile, if you go in am you can see them training the horses.

Not nearby but I can definitely recommend downtown Louisville - so many choices. Mussels and Burger Bar is fabulous. And so is Merle’s Whiskey Kitchen. Fine for young people too. Very casual. Next visit I hope to make it to the Brown Hotel for the famous Hot Brown.
