About
The only park of its kind in the world, the Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm, educational theme park and equine competition facility dedicated to man's relationship with the horse. Set on more than 1,200 acres in the heart of the Kentucky's famous Bluegrass region, the park is THE place to get close to horses! Featuring dozens of breeds of horse at work and at play, the park showcases the horse in daily equine presentations, horse drawn tours, horseback and pony rides, and an array of horse shows and special events throughout the year. The park's International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian Affiliate, is the world's largest equestrian museum. Offering both the experienced horseman and novice an opportunity to explore the many facets of humanity's relationship with the horse, the museum is dedicated to all breeds and disciplines of horse and covers some 50-million years of equine history. State-of-the-art technology complements rare artifacts and scholarly research to present a unique, educational, museum experience for all ages. The American Saddlebred Museum, the Showplace for Saddlebreds, celebrates Kentucky's first native breed of horse. The museum features interactive exhibits and a movie. With the park's own tourist activities and the numerous additional horse shows that take place in the equine competition facilities throughout the year, there can be a fair amount of walking involved, depending on visitor interest level. Comfortable shoes and clothing is recommended, appropriate for Kentucky's seasonal weather. Dogs and other pets are permitted on park grounds, as long as they are on a leash or in an approved carrier, although they may not be permitted in some buildings.

- Percy NCincinnati, Ohio86 contributionsHorse park with GrandsonWe took our Grandson to the Kentucky Horse Park to see the horses. We had a great time at the side chat with the Hall of Champions. We went to see the other horse barns (before the scheduled chats). We were informed that the Southern Lights show had camel rides and pony rides, so we came back in the evening. I hate driving a night, but we gave our boy a great time. He rode a camel, and felt like a kin. Funnel cake for my 2 joys (wife and grandson) to make a great day.We are so glad that you, your wife and grandson enjoyed your visit to the Kentucky Horse Park so much that you returned for the Southern Lights. I agree with your grandson - riding on a camel is a wonderful thing! And yes, the funnel cake booth is always a primary stop anywhere. Thank you for letting us know that you all had a great time. They are dog friendly (dogs not allowed in petting zoo tent). Our dog got his picture taken with Santa. - Susan PPutnam, Connecticut949 contributionsPlan on Spending the Entire Day, Better Yet Two DaysIf you like horses, you should plan to spend the entire day. You may even want to return the next day. Admission includes entry to the International Museum of the Horse and American Saddlebred Museum. My husband and I spent two hours in the International Museum alone, and could have used more time. There are presentations and shows throughout the day at various locations throughout the park. During the main season, May 1 – November 3, 2024, there is one every 45 minutes. The cost to entered varies with season. They also offer trail riding. There are some hilly sections, though the entire park is handicap accessible. The website is very thorough. I took so many photos I will have to post some later.Thank you for writing to us about your visit to the Kentucky Horse Park. What a wonderful overview of your experience. Beautiful scenery. Not a horse person ( spouse is) but still fairly enjoyable. Different horse shows, a museum, horseback ride (costs extra) beautiful grounds. Only other advice eat lunch before you go there. We are glad that your husband convinced you to visit the Kentucky Horse Park. The tours of the grounds by trolley and the parade of breeds were outstanding. A schedule of events cover the whole day. We loved that our group could get up close to the horses. We ended our day with a trail ride and the staff were amazing!Thank you for writing to tell us of your visit to the Kentucky Horse Park. - Myke ACarlisle, United Kingdom108 contributionsInteresting visitWhilst I’m not a horse person, the person I was with is absolutely obsessed. Whilst she was running around having the “best day ever” I found the place interesting. Was good to see about the different breeds and learned things I had never heard of before. The museum was undergoing an update, so only part of the exhibition could be seen. This was still interesting and very informative. All the horses seem really cared for and happy, the staff all seem to love their jobs. Definitely worth a visit if you like horses. We are glad you and your friend enjoyed your visit to the Kentucky Horse Park - she to satisfy her obsession and you to satisfy your curiosity. Our staff are very good at their jobs taking care of the horses and talking with the visitors. Thank you for writing us. We saw many different breeds of beautiful horses during the breed show and enjoyed getting to pet them afterwards. We loved seeing the gigantic draft horses in the big barn! We also saw a retired racing horse. There is an interesting museum on site as well that give some history on racehorses. The grounds are lovely. Great place to visit with family of all ages!Thank you for your comments about your visit to the Kentucky Horse Park. It is a wonderful opportunity to get up close and personal with the horses. - Kate MVirginia293 contributionsGreat place to learn about all kinds of horsesWhat a beautiful place to learn about different horse breeds and to meet them as well. They had many different breeds, and have a "Parade of Breeds" show to introduce them, then you can go to each and pet them and ask their riders questions. There are even more wonderful types of breeds in the stable to visit. They have several retired racehorses you can meet, throroughbreds and standardbreds. Plus lots of beautiful types of draft horses, too. They have a couple of museums which are very interesting, and I adored their statues and memorials that were scattered everywhere, from Man O' War's grave, to a statue of Staff Sgt Reckless, plus Misty, Cigar and Alysheba and more. We also signed up for a trail ride, I hadn't ridden in years, and my husband had never ridden. The horses and guides were so patient and helpful.Even though I really didn't know what I was doing, I always felt safe. Seriously, those horses were so sweet and patient. I highly recommend a visit, especially if you are touring horse country and don't really know very much about horses, you will learn a lot here! The food wasn't amazing but it is typical for a place like this, we ate lunch. We are glad you and your husband had such a great time at the Kentucky Horse Park. I hope that he was not too saddle-sore after his first horseback ride ever. The Park is a lovely space in which to wander and enjoy the horses. Thank your for letting us know that you enjoyed your visit. A lot was closed because of Covid 19. They charge $5.00 to park. The parking lot had weeds growing in it. The water under the bridge as you enter was all green with algae. They did reduce the price to see the exhibits but you got 10 minutes looking at a horse you couldn't even touch. The man behind the counter was telling us about what there was to do, but we couldn't even hear him through the mask and the plexi glass. We decided not to go in. Still cost us $5.00 to park.

Due to Covid, there isn't a ton to do other than the planned activities like the Breeds Parade, the Hall of Champs, etc. Those are scheduled on the hour and are about 15 minutes long. They are also farther away from the other things you can do. So what we ended up doing was walking to an activity, then walking back to do something else, then walking back to an activity. The problem with that was that between all the walking, it didn't actually leave you enough time to do anything like go to the museum or do horseback riding. They should schedule the events every 30 minutes instead, but still just do them twice a day.
The Breeds Parade was cool. There are bleachers that are shaded on two sides and bleachers in the sun on a third side. Everyone stayed socially distant. We missed the Draft Horses because we were horseback riding, which was really just the horses walking in single file for 30 minutes (plan 1 hour total). Great for a 10 year old, not so much for adults. We stuck around for the Hall of Champs. What we found was a guy speaking to a crowd of people about a past Derby winner he had there with him. He had his back to half the people so he was facing one side and the horse. The people behind couldn't hear unless you pushed really close together, and of course, no one was wearing a mask. We ended up leaving.

You must pay $5 to park and then $12 to get into the facilities. Much is closed due to Covid-19 but what was open was nice. We got in the Big Barn and saw several draft horses. There was a horse show going on (no fans) but the participants did bring some horses over for us to pet and talked with us. They did have a volunteer driving a golf cart around to give people rides around the area. There is food for purchase but it is packaged sandwiches. Gift shop is open. Staff is very nice and quite helpful. Man of War plus several other horses are buried on the grounds. Several beautiful bronzes are also sprinkled around. Very nice location but much is currently open.

When I was 7 years old, I visited the Kentucky Horse Park with my parents and brother. Now 40 years later, I returned with my husband...and it was even more magical than the first time! We loved the Hall of Champions and being able to be up close with these amazing creatures. (I even got to spend a little time with Western Dreamer after the presentation!) The Parade of Breeds is a must see and is another opportunity to interact with the horses and their riders. The Big Barn and its HUGE occupants are astounding to see; I loved that you could touch and spend time with any of the horses who wanted to have a little attention. We capped off our visit with a guided horseback ride around the beautiful grounds. The $20 entrance fee gets you access to all of the shows, museum, and attractions; the horseback ride is an extra $30 (and is worth every penny!) The park was far from crowded on a Thursday, and while it was hot outside, there was plenty of shade and air conditioned areas to cool off. I hope it won't be another 40 years before I get the chance to return!

What a lovely description of your return visit to the Kentucky Horse Park. Thank you for writing to us. We are glad it met all your memory-expectations. All young children seem to be drawn to horses, and, even as an adult, you have not lost your attraction to them.
We, indeed, hope that it will not be another 40 years before you return, We are looking forward to your next visit.

Get there at opening to enjoy all of the shows, the horse drawn trolley, and sign up for horseback riding. Two museums to learn every iota about the horse and it’s role in the USA and Kentucky. The restaurant was closed, but the food truck had good food at great prices. Family friendly, plenty of places to sit in the shade, and a short film sharing the history of horses and their role in our lives. Your ticket allows one to visit for two days and there is enough to see and do to make it worthy of a 2 day visit. The American Saddlebred Museum is currently undergoing remodeling, thus only the art portion is open.

Be sure to pay attention to the schedule for the day. The Trolley tour was offered twice and was popular. A nice way to start the visit with an overview. We booked a trail ride and that was totally worth it for my kids aged 11 and 13 (min age is 7). You don't necessarily ride next to the person in your party, and it takes awhile for everyone to get matched to a horse. Ask questions and plan accordingly. My kids could have gone without a parent because it's follow-the-leader style and I didn't even ride next to them.

I’ve visited this place multiple times over the last three decades, and I still love it. The people here love horses, and they’ll share all of their love and knowledge with you freely. The grounds are sprawling and there are many arenas here where world equestrian events are held (check the schedule, many are open to the public). Tons of open fields where horses graze and beautiful statues and monuments. As many mention, there are a couple of museums on campus—one is the International Museum of the Horse, which covers horses from their beginning until present, in addition to showing how the horse has evolved in agriculture and racing. There are many artifacts from other cultures. There are a couple of different shows that allow you to learn about and see the breeds in action. There is also a Hall of Champions, where you can meet derby winners and other famous equestrian winners.
There are several famous horses buried on the grounds, including Man O’ War, who has the rare honor of being buried in his entirety (most racehorses are buried as head, heart, and hooves only).
Right now the park is open Wednesday through Sunday. I actually went on a Tuesday, as the park still keeps their grounds open on those days (no shows or cafes). I wandered in solitude to view the scenery and had a nice, quiet walk. I will return on an open day to check some shows and to support them with ticket sales.

Beautiful campus with lots to see and do for those who love horses. $20 admission includes everything we wanted to do: International Museum of the Horse (where the exhibits were very thorough and professionally done), a horse drawn trolly tour of the grounds, a Hall of Champions presentation, and a Parade of Breeds. There’s quite a bit of walking involved to see everything. The focus was a little heavy on horse racing for my taste, but there’s plenty more to experience, too.

We are traveling FL to OH for 2 weddings. We have made stops along the way. This is first place I had a problem with "required masks". We arrived and paid our parking fee to staff member not wearing a mask and nothing said that they must be worn (or we would have left).
We went into the gift shop (gal behind a plexiglass partition but was wearing a mask) and was turned away. When I asked if all buildings required them she said yes. I asked for my parking money back and she told me to goto visitor center. I walked in and line was pretty long. We just left. Do not go if you dont/can't wear a mask regardless of vaccination status.

I have two teenage girls, and only one day in the area. Would past visitors recommend "Old Friends" or "Kentucky Horse Park"? (And why?) Thank you in advance.

Hello! Thanks so much for your interest in the Kentucky Horse Park! The park is dog and pet-friendly! Domestic pets are allowed to accompany their owners on the park grounds as long as they are on a leash or confined to an approved kennel, and owners clean up after pets as needed. Pets are not allowed in the museum exhibits area (lobbies okay), Iron Works Café (covered patio is okay), and the Alltech Arena. Please do NOT leave pets in cars unattended for any reason.
We look forward to having you, and your furry friends, at the Kentucky Horse Park!

My wife loves horses and I was thinking about surprising her with a trip here at the end of the month. Spend a day doing this and some time scoping out some bourbon distilleries for me...just curious where a good centrally located place to stay would be? Thanks in advance!

We stayed in Frankfort. It was very centrally located for doing tours of Wild Turkey, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, Woodford Reserve or the Horse Park or Keeneland Race track in Lexington, Claiborne Farm in Paris, or Churchill Downs in Louisville.

Is it worth a visit, a week before it opens? I have always wanted to go here and will be passing through with my husband and 8 yr old, about a week prior to to opening. I am bummed about there not being shows but can deal with it. I am hoping since it’s that close to opening day, there will be quite a few horses and such?
Written March 19, 2019
I've never been when it's not open, but there are a lot of exhibits (many indoors) that should still be open. You should still be able to walk through the barns as well. If this something you've really wanted to see, I would say it's worth going, even without the shows.
