Had a fun time
Jun 2021 • Friends
We took a 6, 4, and 2-year-old. We all had fun, but I would say that this is not the type of zoo our 6-year-old was expecting. Animals are pretty limited, and it’s expensive for what you get. We rented a golf cart like I had read from others. That was probably one of the best things they liked since we took it on the nature trail a couple of times. Feeding the kangaroos was a lot of fun as well and something different to do.

Petting a Kangaroo is soft.
Jun 2021
I enjoyed petting a kangaroo, I did not know they could be so soft. It's a nice little area to walk and look at animals.

Good for the Kids
May 2021
I remember going to this place many times growing up. It didn't quite add up this time but I will chalk that up to mostly Covid. It seemed like many of the exhibits were empty.

I would also add to anybody thinking of going for the first time to get there right when they open and on a nice day. We waited in line for roughly 45 minutes to get into the park. And the weather on a rainy or cool day can make the animals lethargic.

But the kids loved it all the same. I would imagine that for them getting to go into the areas with the animals is pretty cool. Especially when you have kangaroos just hoping around you.

I know it is hard because of the area but an indoor reptile area would be a boost and add some appeal to older kids and adults.

There is also a cave tour that you can do here as well.

Great place for families
May 2021 • Family
If you have ever wanted to get up close & personal with a kangaroo, this is for you!! They were friendly, soft, and definitely comfortable around people! There were also Percheron horses, sheep, & goats you could feed & pet. We did the cave tour & our guide (Skyler) was incredible!! Very knowledgeable and friendly, she made it FUN!! I would definitely recommend this place!!

Poor Animals
May 2021 • Family
It is a rundown zoo. Seeing kangaroos depressed, lethargic and looking sick in that unhealthy confinement was devastating. All the animals were sleepy and lethargic by 11 o’clock. The management is not doing any job taking care of the animals. I couldn’t believe they allow dogs in the zoo with wild life around and peacocks walking. On top of that they allow golf carts for the visitors to use putting wild animals and the kids running around in danger.
Totally disappointing place to see Australian animals basically in prison and miserable.

My sons favorite part of our trip!
May 2021 • Family
One of the highlights of our trip! There’s not a lot of animals like you would see at the zoo but there is so much to do! The kangaroo exhibit is amazing. Dozens of roos roaming around & they’re so tame & gentle. My son hung out here multiple times. Of all the things we did on this trip the kangaroos were his favorite thing. The bird house was fun too. They light on you as soon as you walk in. Really cool. You get to stand closer to most animals than I’ve ever been at a zoo. Do yourself a favor & rent the golf cart. Trust me! The one thing that bothered me is some of the animals didn’t have much room to move around.

Skip the bourbon trail and stop here

Seven years later, and still a wonderful place to visit. They have golf carts galore now, and well worth the cost. The people are so knowledgeable and gracious. I had a burger at their concession stand that was superior to Chili's. Please--take about 30 singles and tip these folks. Much deserved.

Good for kids
Apr 2021
We went with my son's cub scout pack, and the kids really enjoyed it. I, personally wasn't overly impressed. My 10 year old son absolutely loved and has asked if we can go back next time we go up that direction. I really bought the tickets for my son to enjoy it, and I'm glad he did. My only complaint would be that the girl that was doing the fudge cutting in the gift shop could have been a little nicer. She served people in front of me without asking any questions, then when she finally got to me cocked attitude that I hadn't paid yet. There was no clear direction that you were supposed to pay for the fudge first then go get it, plenty of other people were getting the fudge then checking out and she never said anything to them about checking out first. Overall, though, the experience was very nice. I'm glad that they offer golf carts because we were all pretty wore out from visiting Mammoth Cave that morning.

An Enjoyable Time With the Animals
Apr 2021
There are two parts to the Kentucky Down Under park. One is Mammoth Onyx Cave. Since I didn't take that in this time around, I'll leave that for another visit. The part I *did* take in, however, was a most enjoyable time!

Kentucky Down Under is an "adventure zoo." Not in the sense that the kangaroos are going to attack you, but rather that you can get much more "up close and personal" with them than in a "regular" zoo. As the name implies, many of the highlights are animals from Australia. Kookaburras (sitting in the old gum tree, as the the old song says), a woma python (which I took a selfie with!), and emus were featured, along with many other animals such as goats, cows, porcupines, and a number of other species of birds.

The highlight, of course, is the kangaroo area. The animals are quite tame in their surroundings, happy to be hand-fed, petted, or just admired. A doe had a joey's foot and tail protruding from her pouch, which was an extra thrill.

I've passed this sign so many times on Interstate 65, and I finally decided to pull off and enjoy it. And enjoy it, I did!

ADVISORY: The terrain can be rather steep in places, and it's at least a one-mile walk around the grounds. Golf carts are available for rent.
