Horse Racing's Living History Museum!

At Old Friends, the non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, KY, the horses may not be racing anymore, but they are winners everyday. Founded in 2003 by former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen, Old Friends cares for more than 135 horses across three states, many of them stallions whose racing and breeding careers came to an end. A "Rural Hall of Fame", the farm welcomes visitors to get up close and personal with such stars of the turf as Breeders' Cup Champion Gulch, Belmont Stakes winner Sarava, millionaire gelding Arson Squad, and many more.

Hear their stories, meet them in person...Er..Horse. Our guests come to visit a few ex-racehorses, they leave having been touched by the heart of a Thoroughbred hero. Tours are daily at 10:00, 1:00 & 3:00 with a reservation.

Saw War Emblem and Silver Charm as they are today, long passed their prime. Good to see they are loved and cared for in a lovely surrounding.

Where else can you go to meet legends? This is our favorite spot to visit. No scams here. All monies go to feed and vet these fur babies who are retired from a difficult sport. Michael, Bea, Viv, John and staff are great. They love these horses (and a couple of goats) like they are family. Please take the time... More

My family took me here. I don't know much about horses, especially race horses. These animals are gorgeous. We got to see them up close and even feed many of them carrots that the facility provides. The only negative to me was spending too much time on the horses that died and were buried on the farm. If you are... More

I went to this farm because I found it on Trip Advisor. What a great choice! I loved it and so did my 9 year old daughter & 73 year old dad. These people have a passion for horses and what they're doing for these Thoroughbreds is amazing. We went to the 10 AM tour in early August. It was... More

We just had the most amazing visit to Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement facility in Georgetown this past Sunday. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, and obviously loves what she does. Before our tour started, she gave us a briefing, mentioned a few horses, and asked if anyone wanted to see a horse she hadn't mentioned. We had indeed just drove... More

I did some research before our trip to Kentucky and liked what Old Friends is doing for these beautiful Thoroughbred horses and chose to visit them. We met Michael the owner who has such passion and love for the horses. All workers are volunteers and truly love working with the horses. Our guide was very informative and gave us the... More

The tour was just over an hour. They provide carrots that you can feed to the residents. Most were sweet if greedy for the carrots, the horses would come running up to greet us and we could pet most of them. Very informative tour guide, provided information regarding each horse's racing career, and some other interesting tidbits! Well worth it!!

Visiting Old Friends was the highlight of our trip to KY. Getting to see former champion racers get to just be horses in their senior years is a real treat whether you are a horse lover or not. Everyone should hear Michael Blowen's personal story that led to the creation of this amazing ministry. And it truly is a ministry.... More

I was a big fan of horse racing as an adolescent, and have tried to follow the sport since, so when I discovered Old Friends while planning a road trip to Chicago, I made it a "MUST GO" attraction on my list. The tours are at 10am and 3pm, so we left Chicago at 6am in order to arrive in... More
