A small temple with a statue of Black Buddha, which was recovered during excavation. The status was partially damaged by the invaders. The small temple is situated next to Nalanda ruins and journey to the temple is through narrow village road, e-rickshaw took us to the temple. The local priest told us about the history of Black Buddha. Onetime visit may be recommended.

A big basalt rock curved sculpture of Lord Goutama Buddha kept in a very simple temple managed by local men. This sculpture was a part of findings in Nalanda ruins. It must be kept in the museum but due to local believers govt could not procure it. Thai pilgrims are regular here. Found all directions written in Thai scripts. Locals keep eye on visitors for money. One request : do not give money to the children who have practised begging at a great extent.

Nine foot statue of Buddha in Bhumi Sparsha Mudra, made of black basalt rock, situated ( at Bargaon ) just outside wall of ASI protected Ruins of Nalanda University. Also worshipped by Hindus as Teliya Baba, they smear the idol with oil in hope of freedom from chronic ailments. New roads has been built which connects Mandir with the main Road. Ample parking space is available. You can buy statue of Buddha outside the mandir, so is hair oil. If the statue is smeared with oil, it turns black. Plenty of Buddhist from Thailand come to visit this mandir. It's not under control of ASI, don't have to buy a ticket for darshan.

Though this black statue seems to be part of ruins of Nalanda, it has been separated to outside through a wall. When I visited this place in August, many Hindu Priests were sitting there and calling it as "Teliya baba" statue! It seems that they have encroached this place in some form and started doing Hindu traditional pooja/rituals. Even the road from main road leading to this temple is very unhygeineic and smelly, as villagers do defecation in open.

This temple is unique by the fact that black basalt rock is used for the Lord's idol which is rarely seen. People can take a tanga or electric driven van to reach here.

The Black Buddha temple is located just opposite Temple no. 14 (of Ruins), but it can be approached from outside. It is a small temple but the Statue of Buddha, in black, is very impressive.
When I visited the place, a group of monks (from Far East or China) were there performing their prayers. The sound of prayer went deep into my mind and theer was a feeling that i am being transported to the land of Buddha.

This is a small temple that has a black stone statue of Buddha. There is historic significance of this statue as it was discovered when the Nalanda ruins were restored. For Buddhist pilgrims this place is revered and I could see pilgrims offering oil on the statue.
I was not aware of this place but had taken an (electric)-auto rickshaw to cover all the places of interest in Nalanda. As part of that circuit, I visited this place.

There is a black Buddha statue around 1 km from the main ruins. This was excavated from one of the temples of Nalanda. The whole place is said to be 10 kms by 5 kms in area, while the excavated area is only 1 sq.km as of date. We also visited the Black Buddha temple - currently serving as active temple.

When you travel to Nalanda, the Black Buddha temple should be in your itinerary. It's a little off the road so take an auto to move around in Nalanda so that you can easily access most of the historically significant places here. The roads are not very well built and quite narrow so cabs or own cars won't be a very good idea. Autos are a better solution but try to bargain with them as they will always quote double the actual amount.
The temple itself is not very well maintained but the Black Buddha statue is quite unique and worth the trip. The locals also would be selling the Black Buddha souvenirs outside in case you wish to buy any. Very peaceful and serene place to visit but could do with better maintenance.

If you are visiting Nalanda then you can visit this also. There is a big black idol of Lord Buddha which is the main attraction. Many people from Thailand, China and ones who follow Buddhism visit this place and pray. One can take a TANGA (horse-cart) or an e-rickshaw (Battery rickshaw) to reach and come back.
