Outstanding refuge. Many birders from across the nation and some from other countries travel to this area to observe the Whooping Cranes.

The wildlife loop at the north end of the refuge is one of the best places in the world to closely observe many species of birds. A high percent of the world population of some species of shorebirds come right through here. The sheer number...More

We arrived at the park just after dawn in order to see as much wildlife as possible. We viewed a variety of field and water birds, several groups of deer, and a magnificent hawk. The park has miles and miles of gravel self-guided roads, which...More

My husband and I took a day trip and enjoyed driving through the refuge. With the lack of rain, there wasn't a lot of water or wildlife. What we saw was great through. Will try another day to see more wildlife. Enjoyed the drive through.

This is a well maintained refuge with a good visitor centre. The member of staff on duty when we were there was very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The road gives good views of pools and parking places are provided on the route but the day...More

This has to be one of the best places to gt close observations of shorebirds and other species. County Road 170 and the Wildlife Loop seem to be the best place, but anywhere on the refuge can turn up an exceptional sighting. Go when you...More

Not one bottle cap. Clean, good gravel roads, thousands of acres and few people. In the first 15 minutes I was amazed and delighted with birds. Late April, I was a bit disappointed not to find Buffleheads and Cinnamon Teal, too many Blue-winged Teal and...More

We saw many rare water birds here. We didn't do much walking since it was 104 degrees, but saw all the birds from the car with binoculars.

We missed the huge flocks of migrating shorebirds by a couple of weeks, which was a disappointment, but we were nonetheless excited by the number of birds we saw here. The birds didn’t seem to mind the rainy and chilly weather, although the cold nixed...More
