This winery was great and we did have dinner here. It was part of the Duoro River Cruise and I am so glad we went! The owner Louis Boros was quite the entertainer and had a story before every course. The food was good and I loved the Moscatel wine! Absolutely go here.

Was recently here as part of a small group tour with Cruzeiros Douro. We had a wonderful lunch and tour. Wish we could have stayed longer and gone to the shop for wine. Am recommending it to others for a visit, want to return, and maybe stay, if possible.

Visited as part of a River Cruise tour and Oh My God what a fantastic experience!
On arrival we received a delicious glass of chilled moscatel with some local bread and cheeses. Our host Luis ( aka Mr Bean) greeted us enthusiastically... he does everything enthusiastically... We enjoyed the beautiful gardens while sipping the moscatel and for me a chance to have a close look at the vines (it's a wine nerd thing, just seeing how the vines were trained). Luis have us quick tour of the old winery which includes some displays of the traditional wine making techniques used until fairly recently in this area. They still make a small amount of wine this way each year. There are some very old wines being stored here, I won't spoil the it for you, I'll leave Luis to explain. If you want to ask question Luis will happily give the time to answer, his enthusiasm is infectious.
We were then led into the restaurant which is a large hall with breathtaking views of the plateau on which this Quinta sits. A delicious 5 course meal then followed, each course interjected with amusing and sometimes hilarious anecdotes from Luis. Lunch was accompanied with copious amounts of Douro wine and topped off with a shot of local 'grappa'. To finish on a high we then celebrated with a dance from the waiting staff, their energy is amazing, which at the end you join in, great fun and easy to take part even for an older person like me! I can't thank the staff enough who in typical Portuguese style served cheerfully and efficiently as well as entertaining us. You leave on a real high, your spirits lifted and your love of Portugal cemented in your heart. Get there somehow and take part!

The gentleman known unofficially as the Mr. Bean of Portugal has heart and soul in his work. He loves what he does at the winery, having inherited it from his father and grandfather. A total pleasure. Food great. Band still playing as we boarded the bus. Just wonderful. My fav part of the Viking Douro River Cruise. Favaios is a quaint town with a warm and welcoming woman baker, church bells ringing and women still doing their wash in outdoor lavages. Hidden from time, high up on cliffs along the river...unforgettable and found a place in my heart.

We visited here as part of a Douro River cruise. We were greeted with a band (drum and accordion) and a taste of muscatel. We then went into lunch - had a nice meal with various appetizers, then soup, followed by stewed veal, potatoes and veggies and a delicious dessert buffet. The band played and everyone danced and had a great time. Mr. Luis Barros whose family owns the quinta, was a wonderful host, very humorous yet informative. A very enjoyable visit.

Visited winery on Douro River cruise. Grounds are lovely. Tour small but interesting. Owner is a hoot and a half. He is Britain's Mr. Bean in real life. A truly passionate man who loves what he does. Winery produces Moscatel. As a young adult, muscatel was what you drank for a cheap drunk. Also think of it as the choice of street drunks because it was so cheap. My impression has changed dramatically with this visit. The wine was excellent and our multi course lunch even more delicious. I don't know if place is open to public or only group tours, but if you are on the Douro this is well worth a stop.

If your cruise or holiday includes this place, don't miss it. I have never been to a more entertaining vine yard visit than this and I've been to many. Echoing the other reviews, Luis (6th generation) is enthusiastic, entertaining and obviously loves what he's doing. Highly infectious (Oh my God!). No holding back tge booze here. Music might be annoying to some but all part of the atmosphere. Best part of our Duoro River cruise.

Like so many previous reviewers, we too came to Quinta de Avessada while on a day excursion, included as part of our week long Viking River Douro River cruise. The absolutely gorgeous September weather also contributed greatly to our enjoyment.

Despite being part of a three busload surge of 100+ American and British tourists, we were immediately welcomed with smiles from everyone on staff - especially from Quinta da Avessada's host and owner, Sr. Luis Barros. How he makes so many hundreds of visitors feel so welcome every day is amazing! It is obvious that his 'work' is his true 'love'.

It's always nice to get off a bus and be allowed a bit of time to unwind and relax ... especially when good food & wine are offered! The grounds of Quinta de Avessada are beautiful, as is the surrounding countryside -- all are truly breathtaking.

Despite the large size of our group, our luncheon was delicious. We also enjoyed both the music as well as Sr. Barros's wonderful and often comic commentary about the history of, and work that takes place at Quinta de Avessada.

After our meal, a number of us then went out into the vineyard where we had fun picking grapes by hand! The process quickly made us appreciate just how labor intensive grape cultivation is.

We then moved back inside where some of the more adventurous of our party took off our shoes and "cooled off" by stomping grapes to begin the wine making process "the old fashioned way"!

We completed our truly wonderful visit with a 'farewell' tasting of the delicious wines Quinta de Avessada produces.

Muito obrigado!

We visited here as part of a Douro River cruise with Riviera Travel. We were greeted for our dinner by the Mr. Bean of Portugal (Luis Barros) who is the son of the owner. with a band, a tasting of Moscatel and some small appetisers . We then went into dinner. We had a lovely meal with various appetizers, then soup, followed by meat and fish and veggies for the main course and a truly wonderful buffet for dessert. Each course was punctuated by a brief hilarious "turn" from Luis. The wine flowed freely and the band played for a time at the end with everybody getting up and dancing. Absolutely highly recommended and certainly a cut above the usual "local visits" you often get on organised tours. There is a shop there but there was absolutely no pressure to buy at all. At the end "Mr Bean" shook our hands as we boarded our coaches back to the ship and wished everyone a great cruise.

Visited as part of a Viking River Cruise tour of Douro River. The winery tour was interesting. This was followed by a visit to Quinta de Avessada. We were greeted by local music and so-so hors d'oeuvres and Moscatel. We then proceeded in have a delightful lunch of soup, chicken and meat loaf, and a dessert bar. The host, who himself was quite entertaining, introduced each course. In all a nice, relaxing, and entertaining visit.
