We stopped here because my husband is a big fan. It cost $20 a person to see two rooms of memorabilia, the inside of the home where he was born, and a short 11 minute film. It was cool to see the items, but in hindsight, I would have just had my husband pay to see those things.

When I found myself in Winterset, Iowa I knew I had to make time to visit the John Wayne Birthplace and Museum. I began my visit at the Museum Gift Shop where I purchased my Ticket. As a senior (60+) I received a $1.00 off the regular $20 admission. The Museum is in a room adjacent to the Gift shop. The are a number of exhibits in display cases from just about every movie or tv show that John Wayne appeared in. Including the Jacket, Rifle and Pistol he used as Marshall Rooster Cogburn and uniforms from Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. This is a small museum, but it is packed full of artifacts relating to The Duke. Because I am a reader and wanted to take it all in, I spend a little more than an hours in the museum before moving on to the Birthplace home that is a block or so away. At the house I was greeted by a very nice lady who pointed out interesting features of the two-room house where John Wayne was born. She told us to be sure to visit the carriage shed out back where we could see on of the Cannons used in “The Alamo.” After finishing my tour of the John Wayne Birthplace and Museum I spent some time walking around Winterset visiting some of the site that was featured in the movie “The Bridges of Madison County.” I spent a total of about 2-hours at the John Wayne Birthplace/Museum and I must say that I enjoyed every minute of my Visit.

LOVED the town and enjoyed touring the museum and John Wayne's birthplace. For an entry fee of $15 you have access to a short documentary on John Wayne that includes an introduction by his daughter, access to the small museum that has some interesting memoriabila and access to the home where he was born. The gift shop has a lot of gift items but you can also purchase several items at the Ben Franklin on the town square. Note... it doesn't take long to go through everything but if you are a fan of John Wayne I think it is worth the visit.
They are currently in the process of expanding the museum but it was not complete during our visit.

Price is too high. Not a lot there. I am one of those people that reads EVERYTHING in a museum. I read everything here, watched the movie and toured the house. Took less than an hour. The movie is just short clips from movies John Wayne was in. Most interesting thing to see here was John Wayne's station wagon. Love Iowa. Love Winterset but this a total rip-off at a $15 admission fee, To add to the insult they even take up space in the museum asking you to donate so they can expand.

Truly one of the finest historical destinations honoring the birth and lifetime achievements of John Wayne, from his birth in this tiny house in the town of Winterset Iowa to his legendary film actor career. You cannot pass through the beautiful state of Iowa on Interstate 80 and pass the museum exit, a few miles south of the interstate you will find this museum historical landmark that will give you a lasting memory you will never forget. Take your time and tour the museum, and actual home and room the Duke was born in, take a few moments to sit in a grand scaled version of the famed Hollywood California Chinese theater, sit in an actual chair from this theater and enjoy a short movie documentary showing a glimpse into the Dukes life. Cannot say enough great things about the museum staff and Director Mr. Brian Downes. Visit the website for annual events held on the Dukes birthday each year as well as throughout the year celebrations.

Came upon this museum as we were driving to another destination, it is a real gem. Not very big but has an amazing collection of exhibits. You start with a quick film on the life of the great man and then walk around the compact museum. Exhibits are very well labelled and everywhere was once and airy and clean. The guides were very knowledgeable and there is a very well stocked shop. Although off the beaten track definitely a place to visit.

The museum is a work in progress. They are building an expansion, but right now, the museum is not worth the $15 admittance. They say there are many more exhibits they have in storage, but don't have the room. But the large space dedicated to the museum has lots of unused space. Wish we had looked at other reviews before visiting this museum.

First off I do agree the admittance fee is high for what you get but since my husband is military and I am a senior ours was a little less. That being said we are BIG John Wayne fans and couldn't miss this. We found it very enjoyable and when they get the new addition done may be back. There was hardly anyone there when we went and so we stayed in museum reading about exhibits and trying to name movies not represented. The house was different as another group of people came while we were there and it is small so it felt crowded.

If you are a fan of The Duke, or a classic movie buff, this stop is worthwhile. The John Wayne Museum is separate from the John Wayne birthplace house, but is right on the same block (cattycorner). To enter the birthplace, you must have a ticket purchased through the museum. The museum has artifacts from the actor, a brief film about him (narrated by his daughter), and includes one of Wayne's cars. The museum is small, but, again for Duke fans, worth the trip out.

This museum was very interesting whether you are a John Wayne fan or not.
Also, go to the Quilt Museum just down the street. Winterset also is in the middle of the Bridges of Madison County.
Good way to spend a day.

Hi, how much time should be allowed to visit John Wayne's Birthplace and Museum? Thank you!

Most John Wayne fans spend about two hours; there's quite a lot to see. The gallery features the largest diversified exhibit of John Wayne artifacts in existence, including original movie posters, film wardrobe, scripts, letters, artwork and sculpture, even one of his customized automobiles. A visit to his Birthplace house is included, as is an introductory film hosted by his daughter Aissa.
I’ve made reservations to come up for his birthday. Do I need to purchase my museum tickets in advance?
Wayne D
Winterset, IA3 contributions
If you want to just visit the Museum, advance tickets are not necessary. Be aware that the John Wayne Birthday Celebration weekend is our busiest time of the year, and you may have to wait if the number of folks in the Museum reaches maximum capacity.
If you are planning to attend the Museum Benefit Dinner and Auction, you also do not need to make reservations in advance. However, there are a limited number of seats available for the dinner, and they often sell out, so I would suggest getting tickets in advance to ensure you can attend the Dinner. With Glen Campbell's daughter Ashley performing for the 50th Anniversary of "True Grit" sales have been brisk.
Complete details about all the goings on for that weekend and tickets may be purchased on our website at johnwaynebirthplace.museum or call us toll-free at (877) 462-1044.

Due to not being there when the museum will be ooen are the grounds still open to see the statue and rock?
Wayne D
Winterset, IA3 contributions
The John Wayne Birthplace & Museum is one 7 days a week, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. A visit to the Birthplace home is included with the price of admission. The grounds are always open you you may visit the staTue in front of the Museum. The Freedom Rock is on the corner to the east, and the Birthplace house just south of that. Thanks for your reply too, David K.; the only correction I would make is there is no John Wayne Museum in California. Some items are on loan from the estate of Maureen O'Hara, such as the jaunting car and her shawl from "The Quiet Man."

how long should we spend at the john Wayne birthplace and museum?

About 1-2 hours. The film in the museum is short, but great. The artifacts are a lot to look at, so you can take your time, or breeze through, depending on what you're interested in doing. The house is small, but you will be able to walk around inside.
While in town, I suggest staying at the Cobblestone. The hotel is newer & one of the best places to stay. Their coffee is Wolfgang Puck, and it's worth waking up to.
The bridges of Madison County are historic, rustic, and amazing. If you're a fan of the book/movie "Bridges of Madison County", you'll also appreciate a meal at the North Cafe, which was featured in the movie. They keep the movie memorabilia there as a reminder where the actors (Clint Eastwood was one) sat during the diner scene.
How far is it from Leclaire Iowa to Winterset
Wayne D
Winterset, IA3 contributions
Le Claire is on the Mississippi River (the eastern edge of Iowa). The most direct route would be west on Interstate 80 to Van Meter, Iowa (exit 110), about 195 miles. Then south on Hwy. 169 about 14 miles to Winterset. The Birthplace & Museum is one block south of the Courthouse Square on John Wayne Drive. Total about 3.25 hours, or 212 miles.

The cost of admission was $15 for adults and $14 for senior citizens. I am not sure how much they charged for children because no one with children was there when we were.
